WALKERS ARE WELCOME WALL HANGING SQUARE Red Kite and patchwork field landscape

On behalf of Wells Walkers are Welcome I would like to thank Christine, from the Wednesday Sewing and Handicraft Group, for producing the above hand-made art work. The above square will now be sent to take its place proudly on the Walkers are Welcome National Wall Hanging. There are currently 43 individual squares representing towns that are affiliated to Walkers are Welcome. With the square I will write up a story to explain the contents and context of the piece. Of course the Red Kite is our iconic bird as the last pair left survived in the hills above our town. There are now 1600 pairs in Great Britain and they are protected under a Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. They are a constant presence in the landscape and beautiful to watch as they effortlessly glide over our hills and fields. They are one of the great conservation success stories of recent times. Ysgol Dôlafon Newsletter December 2018

Rags to Riches - Our clothes donations raised an impressive 531.4kg of unwanted clothes amounting to £265.70 for school funds. Thank you to all those who donated clothes.

Remembrance Day – Pupils made recycled poppies which were displayed in flower boxes around the town. Some poppies were sent to Meriel as part of their Remembrance Service.

Finn and Lilia attended a Bronze Ambassador’s Meeting in YCC on November 15th. Both pupils have displayed a love of sport and are an inspiration to their peers.

Children in Need fundraising fun and games on 16th November and the collection from Côr Dôlafon’s Cinderella concert at the school raised a very impressive £243.03.

Real Ale Wobble fundraising - an enormous thank you to Kate for all her hard work in organising the day. Thank you to parents and friends in the community for your support too.

The school entered a tree in the Annual Christmas Tree Festival in St James’. This year we came first in the people’s choice and first in the children’s group. Our Christingle Service in St James’ Church on the 13th December shared the message of Christmas. The candlelight was magical and we thank the church for allowing us to hold our service there.

Diwrnod Llewelyn – KS2 pupils joined pupils from other schools in our Cluster to remember the life of Prince Llewelyn on December 11th. They wore the crowns and carried the shields they’d made in the art project with Tudur Rees as they marched around the Groe. This was followed by a gig in the Strand Hall.

Pupils enjoyed their Christmas Dinner and Christmas Party. After the party there was a surprise visit from Father Christmas who brought gifts for all the children. Thanks to Friends of the school.

We held an Open Evening for Parents and Families on 19th December and the community had a chance to hear some Christmas songs, along with traditional carols, a cup of coffee and a mince pie at our Sponsored Sing on 21st December. This was very well attended, and we’d like to thank everyone who supported us by buying raffle tickets, donating raffle prizes and by sponsoring the children’s singing. The children also sold produce they had made:- Eco-School Council sold table decorations and Gardening Club sold potted hyacinth bulbs. Thank you.

Côr Dôlafon entertained the Thursday Club on 20th December with a selection of Christmas Carols. Thank you Heather. Pupils have taken part in a Christmas Card Competition at the Heritage Centre. Winners were: Lily Halliwell; Logan Davies; Lily Morgan; Grace Knight; Kate Wright; Alice Wright and Sophie Ward. A selection of the entries will be printed and sold as Christmas cards next year. Term ended with a Friends of the School Christmas Disco.

THANK-YOU!

The Irfon Catchment Resilient Freshwater Habitats

The Irfon Catchment Resilient Freshwater Habitats project has been awarded funds from the Sustainable Management Scheme to demonstrate an innovative way to restore our natural resources.

The River Irfon is a Special Area of Conservation designated for its exceptional freshwater biodiversity. However, the pressures of modern land use are having a damaging effect on the health of this much-loved river.

The catchment also supports some of Wales’ remaining breeding curlew and also one of Wales’ last remaining freshwater pearl mussel populations (the only population in Wales outside of Snowdonia) which is on the brink of extinction in the catchment. The mussels haven’t bred for several decades and are an indicator of the overall health of the watercourses and reflect land management within the catchment. This collaborative project aims to reduce sedimentation and nutrient pollution, and contribute to better flood management, increased carbon storage, and benefit the health and well-being of the Irfon’s communities.

To achieve this, a new approach is needed and through a collaborative effort by local farmers, foresters, Dwr Cymru, rural business & NGOs, it’s time to take action and find innovative ways of restoring the health of this catchment.

We need your ideas. It’s the community’s river and we hope to bring everyone together to restore this special river. Public involvement is crucial and over the coming months a number of meetings and events will be held to provide opportunities to discuss your ideas and gather knowledge and stories of historical land use in the catchment. There will also be lots of opportunities to get involved with surveys & monitoring to record what works best and to undertake habitat management.

There will be more information and events advertised in next month’s issue.

Get involved: contact project manager Hannah Shaw on [email protected].

SHADES OF GREEN A VICTORIAN SHOP WITH A MODERN TWIST

Shades of Green is a community shop promoting and selling Arts and Crafts by local artisans; new and pre-loved clothes and treasures; local jams and chutneys; a selection of teas and other produce. All items are of excellent quality and at reasonable prices. Being a community shop Shades of Green sells on a commission basis currently 15% and artists and local people selling through the shop receive 85% of an agreed price. Since opening in late August 2018 on average 40 people a month have received monies from sales in the shop. As a social enterprise the ethos of Shades of Green is to support the local community and benefit the local economy. Once a year Shades of Green will donate to a good cause within the community - yet to be decided. The shop is developing future relationships with organisations like Coleg Elidyr at Rhandirmwyn and will continue to promote and sell arts and crafts and local produce made in Mid-Wales.

A special thankyou to Gordon and Diane Green, Green Events, all the people who have supported bringing an empty shop back to life in our community, and Prince Charles Trust Prime Cymru who have given us free advice. Shades of Green is evolving and will be introducing new and exciting ideas specific to Llanwrtyd Wells. Winter opening times are: Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 4.30pm.
