2011 Weekly Newsletter Issue No 13 Presidents Report

Firstly I want to thank my committee for ensuring that the football club remained on track over the last 4 weeks when I have been away. Whilst most of this was school holiday time there is still always plenty of footy club activity. To Mick Ahearn, Rob Andriski, Marc Gauci & Greg Miller, thanks for writing the Presidents report. It is great to know that we have such a fantastic committee running the club.

Where has the season gone? This week is Round 12 and this means we are getting close to the end of the 2011 season. This week is the final home and away round for our Under 9 teams before they have their Lightening Carnival competition on Sunday July 31st. This year the MSJFL is trialing a new format for the Lightening Carnival. This is explained on the MSJFL website (www.msjfl.com.au) and I encourage all coaches, team managers and parents in the Under 9 and Under 10 age groups to visit the web site to ensure you are familiar with the new format. This format is a trial for the 2011 season and the MSJFL will be holding a feedback session later in the year. As such after competing in this revised format I would encourage constructive feedback that we can relay back to the league. PIE NIGHT TONIGHT from 6pm at Dunlop Pavilion

Next Wednesday night July 27th is the 2011 Presidents Dinner at Giorgio’s Restaurant on the corner of Glenferrie Road and High Street. The cost is $65 per head all inclusive. We are very privileged to have David Parkin as our guest speaker. This event is not a fund raiser and is designed to get mums and dads together in a social environment. Please make the effort to support this function by attending the dinner.

My final reminder for the last four rounds and finals is we must remain vigilant with regard to behavior and attitude. Unfortunately again the ugly head of racism has reared its head in local football involving boys at the Under 11 level, we must ensure that this NEVER happens at the Knights. Let’s ensure we don’t spoil what has been a fantastic 2011 season in the last few weeks. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

Bryan (First Aid)

Malvern Knights Trainer,

Bryan Hua Khoon Ngui On game day, Brian can be contacted on the Knights Mobile: 0421 747 783

We all like to enjoy our football, whether it’s that terrific goal or bump. A good game would ultimately be played in good spirit with no injuries. Obviously, the best ways to avoid injuries are by preventing them from happening and playing safe. However, accidents do occur and below are just some things to keep in mind, especially first aid assistance, while enjoying your football at the East Malvern Junior Football Club.

1. First and foremost, keeping calm would help any situation immensely.

2. An on duty club trainer, Bryan, will be available at DW Lucas, Basil and Stanley Grose grounds and can be contacted on 0421 747 783.

3. Basic first aid assessment can be performed with DRABCD – Look out for Danger, Response from victim, obstruction of Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation procedures.

4. Witness or an account of an incident would be helpful to a player’s management if not known to the treating trainer/first aider/medical or allied health persons.

5. Protection for soft tissue injuries can be followed using PRICE – Protection of injured area (stop activity), Rest, intermittent Icing (no more than 20 mins), Compression and Elevation. The idea is to reduce swelling of the area.

6. An ice pack and firm pressure is often a good starting point for bleeding injuries. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

Club News | FIRST AID MANAGEMENT

7. Dislocation of joints must not be forced back into place or risk the damage of a nerve or blood vessel.

8. Ambulances can be called on 000.

9. Suspected neck or back injuries should be attended with utmost care to prevent any or further injury to the spinal cord. Players should not be moved and the game would have to be stopped to allow for appropriate assessment/ambulance arrival.

10. Severe head injuries (e.g. concussions) are to be dealt with carefully and similarly to neck or back injuries. Attached below are AFL guidelines on Management of Concussion in Community Football

11. Location of stretchers;

• DW Lucas – In the “Home” change rooms of Dunlop Pavilion

• Basil & Stanley Grose Reserve – In Sheridan Pavilion

• Gardiner – In the Store Room of the Change Rooms.

12. Location of keys to barriers that allow vehicle access to grounds (TBC)

13. In the event a medical facility is needed on the Sunday, the closest hospitals would be Cabrini Hospital (183 Wattletree Rd, Malvern VIC 3144) or Monash Medical Centre (1/246 Clayton Rd, Clayton VIC 3168).

• Please note that if an ambulance attends for a player that has suffered a head injury it is probable that the player will be transported to the Royal Children’s as this is Melbourne’s only paediatric receiving centre for moderate or severe head trauma”.

14. The permission of resuming play after an incident or injury would appropriately and best be given by a certified trainer/first aider/medical or allied health persons.

15. Children suffering seizures on the football field may not always do so as a consequence of head trauma or pre existing epilepsy. The onset of cardiac arrest is frequently characterised by seizure activity and all children who have seized should be assessed adequately to ensure that they are not pulseless. Breathing will be present in the patient early in cardiac arrest and the presence of breathing should not be used to exclude this condition”.

Last but not least, enjoy the game, play safely and fairly!

Malvern Sports Physiotherapy Centre

What:

A triage service run by a physiotherapist (Kevin Craigie) for affiliated clubs to assess, manage, and refer acute injuries.

The program will be run to provide education, early injury management, referrals for further investigation, and proper follow up by a health professional as required. This is beneficial for the players and club as they are getting early advice in regards to what they can do at work, training and games, and they can get the appropriate follow up treatment to allow for early return to sport.

When:

Injury Screening: Monday mornings following weekend games 7am-8 or if required due to numbers late Monday night.

Run through Lifecare Malvern Sports Medicine.

Cost:

No cost will be incurred by the player or the club for the screening service. Lifecare will arrange for a physiotherapist to be available on the Monday morning to provide the care.

Who will be seen:

Players who have sustained an acute injury through the course of the game and were not deemed suitable for an emergency department will be eligible for the service. Players who have chronic problems will not be appropriate for the service as the time restraints will not allow for proper treatment. Follow up regarding these injuries with a health professional can be arranged by the physiotherapist.

How will appointments be made:

For EMJFC direct contact will be made between the team coach, manager, or trainer and the physiotherapist. It is up to the parents of the child to contact the team officials to make contact with the physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will have the final say on whether the patient is appropriate for the service. Appointments must be made on the Saturday following the game or the Sunday following. We are unable to accommodate any players turning up on Monday morning as we cannot guarantee availability.

For injuries requiring urgent attention:

A sports injury casualty run on Saturday afternoons (1-7pm) at Lifecare Prahan will be available for acute cases requiring urgent attention. This will be run by sports doctors at a fee, but may be EAST MALVERNSEQUOIA JUNIOR CLUB FOOTBALL CLUB

a cheaper, faster, and more appropriate alternative to emergency departments for particular injuries. No appointment is necessary Contact Lifecare Prahan on 5298899.

BANKSIA PARK, BEAUMARIS, 17 JULY 201

Knights Break Through

A CRISP JULY MORNING. Coach Simon Theodore’s knees were covered for the first time this season. The Knights boys - school holiday – weary and training deprived - had found themselves on the unfamiliar sandy soil of Banksia Park, home of the Beamauris Black Tails, who had beaten the boys on their own turf two months earlier.

Few would have guessed that a historic first victory awaited them.

Right from the first bounce, the Knights moved the ball as well as they had all year: Will Bowen, pushing forward from full back, slotted the Knight’s first goal within the opening two minutes. Fast running and precision passing from Ben Theodore, Charlie Enders, Noah Whatley and Kye Walford made the Knights look dangerous.

But Beaumauris were up to the challenge, getting plenty of the ball. One of several strong marks in the midfield from Harry Retschko stopped a dangerous run and likely Black Tails goal. Overall, the Knights looked the better team in the first quarter and EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB might have ended up with four goals. Instead, Theodore completed a best on ground they traded two apiece with their opponents, performance by piling on three further goals, the second coming from a great crumb and snap Lachie Dukes also making a stand-out by Charlie Giles. contribution.

Frustratingly for the Knights however, the Black Tails managed to goal in the dying seconds of the quarter. And so both teams went to their three quarter huddle with five goals each – neither team having kicked two of them consecutively. It looked set for a tight finish.

But in the final quarter the Knights – perhaps sensing their destiny – found another gear. They peppered the goals for two behinds before an ingenious 10cm pass from Sam Glasser, in career-best form, was marked by Will Bowen who went back and kicked his second goal.
