In contrast, pain in animals is typically inferred on the basis of nonverbal behaviour. Unfortunately, these behavioural data can be problematic when the reliability and validity of the behavioural tests are questionable. The thesis proposed here is based on the bioengineering principle that structure determines function. Basic functional homologies can be mapped to structural homologies across a broad spectrum of vertebrate species. For example, olfaction depends on olfactory glomeruli in the olfactory bulbs of the forebrain, visual orientation responses depend on the laminated optic tectum in the midbrain, and locomotion depends on pattern generators in the spinal cord throughout vertebrate phylogeny, from fish to humans. Here I delineate the region of the human brain that is directly responsible for feeling painful stimuli. -

Impulse control disorders of a sexual nature have probably plagued humankind from its beginnings. Sometimes classified today as "sexual addiction" or "nonparaphilic sexual addiction,"l it has been labeled by at least one professional working within the field as "'The World's Oldest/Newest Perplexity."'2 Newest, because for the most part, the only available data until recently has come from those working within the criminal justice system and as Patrick Carnes points out, "they never see the many addicts who have not been arrested."3 By definition, both paraphilic4 and nonparaphilic sexual disorders "involve intense sexual urges and fantasies" and which the "individual repeatedly acts on these urges or is highly distressed by them .. "5 Such disorders were at one time categorized under the classification of neurotic obsessions and compulsions, and thus were usually labeled as disorders of an obsessive compulsive nature. Since those falling into this latter category, however, perceive such obessions and compulsions as "an unwanted invasion of consciousness"6 (in contrast to sexual impulse control disorders, which are "inherently pleasurable and consciously desired"7) they are now placed under the "impulse control disorder" category.s To help clarify the distinction: The purpose of the compulsions is to reduce anxiety, which often stems from unwanted but intrusive thoughts. -

However, less is known about the extent to which particular processes that support anticipatory pleasure, including memory, prospection, and imagery, are disrupted in schizophrenia. We asked 32 people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and 29 people without schizophrenia to provide prospection narratives in response to positive, negative, and neutral event cues. Prior to prospection, participants provided personal memory narratives or completed a control task. When prompted with salient event cues, the content and experience of personal memories rendered by people with schizophrenia did not differ from those of controls. Further, people with and without schizophrenia reported similar vividness of mental imagery and their prospections varied by valence in similar ways. However, we found interesting group differences -

Conflicts of interest None Abstract Pleasure and reward are central for motivation, learning, feeling and allostasis. Although reward is without any doubt an affective phenomenon, there is no consensus concerning its relationship with emotion. In this mini-review we discuss this conceptual issue both from the perspective of theories of reward and emotion as well as human systems neuroimaging. We first describe how the reward process can be understood and dissected as intertwined with the emotion process, in particular in light of the appraisal theories, and then discuss how different facets of the reward process can be studied using neuroimaging and neurostimulation techniques. We conclude that future worK needs to focus on mapping the similarities and differences across stimuli and mechanisms that are involved in reward processing and in emotional processing, and propose that an integrative affective sciences approach would provide means for studying the emotional nature of reward. -

Seeberg4, Svein Guldal6, Frode Strisland4, Cecilie Morland7,8 & Bjørnar Hassel1,9* Intellectual disability (ID) afects approximately 1% of the population. Some patients with severe or profound ID are essentially non‑communicating and therefore risk experiencing pain and distress without being able to notify their caregivers, which is a major health issue. This real‑world proof of concept study aimed to see if heart rate (HR) monitoring could reveal whether non‑communicating persons with ID experience acute pain or distress in their daily lives. We monitored HR in 14 non‑ communicating participants with ID in their daily environment to see if specifc situations were associated with increased HR. We defned increased HR as being > 1 standard deviation above the daily mean and lasting > 5 s. In 11 out of 14 participants, increased HR indicated pain or distress in situations that were not previously suspected to be stressful, e.g. passive stretching of spastic limbs or being transported in patient lifts. Increased HR suggesting joy was detected in three participants (during car rides, movies). In some situations that were previously suspected to be stressful, absence of HR increase suggested absence of pain or distress. We conclude that HR monitoring may identify acute pain and distress in non‑communicating persons with ID, allowing for improved health care for this patient group. Philosophies of Happiness Appendix 4: Aristotle: Pleasure Without Sensation In Book 3.10, Aristotle attributes pleasure to thinking (dianoia); he writes that though the lover of honor or learning enjoys or takes pleasure (khairei) in the thing he loves, his body is not affected at all, only his thought.i As contemporary Aristotelian scholar J.O. Urmson notes, “this remark puzzled the commentator Aspasius to the point of exasperation: ‘What does he mean,’ he protests, ‘when he says that the enjoyment of lovers of learning or honour involves a condition of the intelligence? For enjoyment and the pleasures are not in the intelligence but in the affective (pathetiko) part of the soul.’” Urmson then comments: “Aspasius never understands Aristotle's view that enjoyment of learning is exhibited in the effortless concentration of the intelligence on its problems rather than in getting some feeling as a result or concomitant of one's study.”ii In other words, Aristotle held a “modal” rather than a “sensate” view of pleasure; pleasure is a mode of engaging in activity, rather than a feeling experienced as a result of activity. When the activity is a sensory one, Aristotle regards pleasure as the enjoyment of sensation, rather than as itself a sensation.iii Thus, although in 1.8, he does say that pleasure is among the things “of the soul,”iv the passage in 3.10 suggests that a thinking being without soul can take pleasure in whatever way it can think without an organ of thought, through understanding (nous) alone. Pleasure does not require sensation; we may take pleasure in a physical sensation, but Aristotle does not seem to regard physical sensation itself as pleasure.
