    Resource Centre support for East Brighton groups doubles in 2018 Resource Centre support work with volunteer run community groups in East Brighton area has almost doubled in the last year. We have continued to provide essential support with our Accounts Examination and Design & Print service. In addition, demand for on-to-one support and consultancy, in all aspects of running a group, has more than doubled. It has been inspiring to see so many new groups, run entirely by local people, emerging and finding their feet over the last year. This adds to the many groups that continue to do what they do so well, understanding the needs of their community and taking action to support local people and bring them together. One-to-one support and consultancy We provided 56 one-to-one support sessions (compared to 22 in the previous year) to 20 different groups. Seven of these groups are either new or had never used the Resource Centre before. Collectively, they help and improve the wellbeing of a wide range of local people from ‘the cradle to the grave’ and lots of people in between. They help improve the local woods, parks and outdoor spaces; provide lunches for children, families and older people; organise events that are free to local people; provide art and dance activities; run community buildings; investigate local history; create newsletters; and provide a hub where local people can come together to build networks and friendships. We supported groups to draft constitutions, policies and procedures; think about legal structures and report to the Charity Commission; keep their accounts and prepare their budgets; improve their communication and use of social media; apply for funding and evaluate their projects.

    Update: 15 January YOUR HEALTHWATCH Dental services Healthwatch Brighton and Hove asked local people to tell us about their experiences of dental care from September to December 2020, and 56 people responded. You can access our findings here. We are receiving a large number of queries asking how to find an NHS dentist. Dental services remain under pressure and full services have not yet resumed and have once again been impacted by the current lockdown. We are working with NHS England, who commission dental services, to get better information and will share this with you as soon as we get this. In the meantime, please email us with any questions and we will do our best to help [email protected] COVID vaccine A reminder that we have created a dedicated webpage on the Healthwatch Brighton and Hove website which is being regularly updated.     Update: 21 December A message from Fran McCabe, Chair of the Healthwatch Board The last time I gave out a message, I was sitting in my garden in the sunshine during the first lockdown. We have come a long way since then, with new treatments for those who get COVID-19 and vaccines here for many of us - or at least on the horizon. But it is still not normal, and I hope this Christmas you will be able to see those who are important to you. Despite the awfulness, Healthwatch rallied around and we have been in contact with many more people than in previous years albeit by survey, and telephone, and even webinars. People have told us about their experiences of using general practice, dentistry, visiting relatives in care settings, cancer services, and how they feel about the increasing use of technology. I.T has meant that many of us have been able to keep in contact and have meetings, but it can be a mixed blessing and it is not the only answer for care, as many people need face-to-face contact about their ailments. The COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated how important health and social contact is, and how lucky we are to have the NHS, which is once again stepping up to the plate as COVID-19 cases rise again - and all the other front-line workers in care, education, and services who have had to work harder than ever over the year. Thank you to Healthwatch Volunteers, Staff and Board, Young Healthwatch and all our colleagues in the health and social care services and the community.

Sustrans is the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity and is responsible for the development of the 12,000 miles of National Cycle Network. We hope you will enjoy exploring the local area and make the most of your stay at Sheepcote Valley Club Site. The routes take in part of National Cycle Network Route 2 along Brighton seafront. In its entirety, Route 2 runs from Newhaven to Portsmouth. Brighton is a buzzing destination, with plenty of activities for all ages. The Route to Brighton 1 Leave the Site and turn right into the lane through East Brighton Park. 2 At the end of the lane, cross Wilson Avenue and continue for 100 yards along Henley Road until you reach a T-junction. 3 Turn left into Whitehawk Road and head straight across the mini-roundabout and through some traffic lights, where Whitehawk Road turns into Arundel Road. 4 After 200 yards you will reach the coast road, Marine Drive. Use the crossing to cross the dual carriageway. You have now joined National Cycle Network Route 2. 5 Follow NCN2 to the seafront down either of two ramps; one ramp is 30 yards to your left, the other 30 yards to the right. Both routes drop quickly, have sharp bends and are heavily used, so take care and look out for other cyclists and pedestrians. 6 Follow the marked cycle path, which loses any distinctive markings as it joins the road (see 4) that runs along the top of Brighton beach.
