Port Alberts Day Celebrations 25th of Jan to the 28th, see page 2.

PAPA Meeting will not be held until Tuesday February Port Albert, Happy 2017 the 14th at the CFA Meeting Rooms As we say goodbye to 2016; some of us say goodbye sadly and some of us say goodbye with pleasure to a year that took people close that we loved and for others some of our greatest loved performers. For me the loss of Labyrinths tights wearing Port Albert Market, Sunday David Bowie, the fantastically somber Leonard Cohen & the flamboyant Prince; and the 22nd of Jan at the off course my guilty pleasure, Harry Potters Professor Severus Snape; (the amazing Mechanics Hall from 9am - Alan Rickman) has made this a dark year for loved ones and performers.

However for Port Albert and our Local Area, I think we have seen some amazing [email protected] changes and events. We have seen Port Alberts Road get its new footpath (although it took much longer than any of us would have liked), we've seen another great Australia Day celebration (about to surpassed by this years event hooray!!), our Port Albert Progress Association wonderful 175th birthday which I think was a winner (especially with Warren Curry’s PO BOX7, Port Albert 3971 amazing exhibition of our areas history, I may be biased but I think not), the rezoning of [email protected] a large section of properties (something we have been fighting for, for a long time), and finally having a Port Albert Councillor, Gayle Maher to represent us (congrats Gayle!!!) All works in The Port Albert Altogether its been a good year for our small town and this is only a small look at our Tattler remains a copywriter of successes'. 2016 has been an extremely busy year with many events and issues to deal with. The association has acquitted itself very well and achieved some remarkable results. We have had productive meetings with council officers in regards to street scaping, ongoing drainage issues and plans for improvements, and pushing for the extension of the Tarra Trail to Port Albert and connection to the Great Southern rail trail. The footpath completed on the eastern side of the Tarraville Road has been long argued for by Port Albert residents. We have also seen more maintenance work being carried out on our drains in recent times with council officers admitting they need to get out and see things for themselves more often. Something we will be reminding them of throughout 2017.

You will see the advertisement in this Tattler edition for the drop-in session planned by WSC on January 11th, in Port Albert, to hear our views on planning for an additional boat ramp. That will be a very important meeting to be part of. Consideration needs to be given to not just putting boats in the water. Traffic flow and parking must be major considerations in that project. So please do drop in and engage with the shire, let them know your views. Progress certainly will be presenting the views expressed on these topics in our community plan survey.

We can also expect to see, early in 2017, formal communication from WSC in relation to long term solutions for the drainage problems that plague most of Port Albert. Progress will publish an information and discussion paper for the community in January to help with understanding of the existing problems and the proposed solutions.

Well for my first letter to the editor for 2017 I would like to focus on something I and many people have thought about for quite some time, The Water Tower. I cannot begin to even explain how many people I have spoken to recently that would like to see that big concrete tower turned into something, not just more appealing but maybe something that could even be a draw card for the town. ‘why don’t we paint it” I've been asked constantly? And I say why not! Can’t you imagine a great piece of art work depicting the town or our history wrapped right around it, it would look incredible. And we wouldn't be the first town to do it, its happen all over, taking these industrial spaces and turning them into pieces of art and even tourist attractions.

For our community, what a blank canvas, what an incredible space to make this town even more inviting and to give our local arts community a chance to paint on what I would consider one of the greatest blank canvas you could imagine.

So for my first point of the year, I would like to see our water tower converted into a piece of local art, and if you also feel the same well lets make it happen? What would you like to see depicted on our water tower?

Its going to take us all getting involved to get this done so come to progress, email me at the Tattler, get on our Facebook page (visit Port Albert) or email progress!! It could be something exceptional. And that is personally my first 2017 goal.

Obviously across the page is a very quickly poorly produced mock up, but hey, I'm just saying,

Think on it……….
