(Mollusca: Gastropoda). – Spixiana 30/1: 121-125 The higher systematics of the family Ovulidae is reorganised on the basis of re- cently published studies of the radulae, shell and animal morphology and the 16S rRNA gene. The family is divided into four subfamilies. Two new subfamilîes are introduced as Prionovolvinae nov. and Aclyvolvinae nov. The apomorphism and the result of the study of the 16S rRNA gene are contro- versally concerning the Pediculariidae. Therefore, the Pediculariidae are excluded as subfamily from the Ovulidae. SuBBA RAO Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta ABSTRACT This paper is the concluding part on the Strombidae of Indian Soas and the first comprehensive report on tlie species of this region. Fourteen species belonging to four genera namely, Lambis, Tibia, Terebellum and Rimella are recorded from the Indian Ocean. Two species of Rimella are reported here for the first time from Indian Seas. INTRODUCTION THE FAMILY STROMBIDAE is represented by five genera namely, Strombus, Lambis, Terebellum, Tibia and Rimella in the Indian Seas. The collections in the Zoological Survey of India are well represented in having all the genera. The genus Strombus was dealt with in a previous paper (Subba Rao, 1971). The present paper deals with the remaining four genera namely, Lambis, Tibia, Terebellum and Rimella. The author is grateful to Dr. S. Taxonomic implications of the residual colour patterns of ampullinid gastropods and their contribution to the discrimination from naticids. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 56 (2): 329–347. The diversity of residual colour patterns is revealed for the first time in the European fossil Ampullinidae. The colour pat− terns were studied under Ultraviolet (UV) light in approximately 3100 specimens belonging to 83 species, 12 genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina, Ampullonatica, Eocernina, Ampul− linopsis, Vanikoropsis, Pictavia, and Ampullospira) and three subgenera (Globularia, Deshayesia, and Cernina within the genus Globularia). Forty−six Cainozoic species revealed residual colour patterns and 29 of them, belonging to six genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina), are described herein as ex− amples representing the entire diversity of the encountered colour patterns. These patterns are most diverse during the Middle Eocene coincident with the period of highest taxonomic diversity of the Ampullinidae. Four basic classes, re− garded as containing possible homologous colour patterns in terms of pigments incorporation modalities, are proposed. Class I, a fluorescent wide diffuse area or spiral stripes, occurs in most of the species, while the three others are more pecu− liar. Class II, fluorescent axial zigzagging stripes, Class III, fluorescent axial to slightly opisthocline stripes or segments, and Class IV, fluorescent patches forming axial segments by coalescence, allow an easy distinction between the genera Globularia, Pachycrommium, and three peculiar species of Ampullina. -

Lobatus gigas, formerly known as Strombus gigas, is a large marine soft-bodied gastropod mollusc with a hard calcareous external spiral-shaped shell with a glossy finish of pale shades of pink and orange on the interior (Fig. 1). Adults can reach a maximum length of 30cm and weigh up to 3.3 kg. This species is gonochoristic, with separate males and females. Soft bodied features include snout-like proboscis; black-speckled foot; two eyestalks topped with distinctive, yellow eyes and a pair of tentacles (Randall, 1964). DISTRIBUTION. Lobatus gigas is found in the tropical western Atlantic from Florida to Brazil (Martin, 1995) (Fig. 2). The species is present throughout the Caribbean. Percharde (1968) noted that Lobatus gigas were commonly seen along the northwest coast of Trinidad and around the Bocas Islands, and were also found in most bays in Tobago. HABITAT AND ACTIVITY. Found in marine habitats such as coral reef and rocky shore environments (Fig. 3), seagrass beds and alternating sand flats (Fig. 4) (Randall 1964, 255). The limitation in depth is based on that of their plant food. -

Such assessments can contribute to a more comprehensive evaluation of natural history museums in the Philippines, as well as biodiversity management. This review showed that local museums in the Philippines have much to improve in terms of their accessibility and geographic coverage in order to effectively cater to research and conservation needs of the country. Online access to databases was lacking for local museums, making it cumbersome to retrieve collection information. The UST museum held the most species and subspecies across all museums (4899), comparable to the national museums of countries such as the USA and France. In terms of size, there were larger Philippine mollusk collections in museums abroad. Majority of mollusk specimens come from Regions 4 and 7, while the CAR and Region 12 were least sampled. Publications on Philippine mollusks are dominated by taxonomic and biodiversity research. -

VERMEIJ2 1Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2E9 2Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Davis, CA 95616, USA Received 27 June 2016; revised 4 October 2016; accepted for publication 25 October 2016 A recurrent theme in evolution is the repeated, independent origin of broadly adaptive, architecturally and function- ally similar traits and structures. One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distri- bution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs. Diversification rates were correlated in a few cases with the presence of varices, especially in the Muricidae and Tonnoidea, but more than half of the origins are represented by three or fewer genera. Varices arose many times in many forms, but generally in a phylogenetically clumped manner (more frequently in particular higher taxa), a pattern common to many adaptations. -
