The meeting with the Wildcats not only marks the first between the two programs, but also marks the first time since becoming an NCAA program that Brevard has squared off against a team that currently makes up the Pioneer League. Brevard is 2-8 in its season openers dating back to the 2007 campaign with the two victories coming against Edward Waters in 2009 and 2010. The 51-6 victory over Edward Waters to open the 2009 slate was the first of five straight for the Tornados, who finished 7-4 overall that season. Brevard managed to outscore its opposition 174-49 during the five-game winning streak. <Brevard in Season Openers> (since joining NCAA) Season Opponent Venue Result 2007 UVA-Wise A L, 41-23 2008 UNC Pembroke H L, 28-0 2009 Edward Waters A W, 51-6 2010 Edward Waters H W, 53-27 2011 Garder-Webb A L, 34-17 2012 Presbyterian College A L, 45-10 2013 Presbyterian College A L, 42-24 2014 Western Carolina A L, 45-21 2015 Virginia Union A L, 35-21 2016 East Stroudsburg H L, 49-14 RECLASSIFICATION TO NCAA DIII TRANSITION: On May 20, 2015, Brevard President Dr. David C. The Hawks and Scots shared last year's USA South championship but it was Huntingdon who earned the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament by way of its 28-24 win over Maryville during regular season play. The Hawks fell in the first round of the playoffs and finished with a 9-2 overall record while Maryville completed the 2016 campaign with an 8-2 overall mark. The USA South championship was the second consecutive for Huntingdon and the third for Maryville in its history. The USA South will welcome its newest football-playing member, Brevard College, this season. The Tornados are currently reclassify- ing from NCAA Division II status. Brevard is not included in this year's preseason poll as the Tornados are not be eligible for championship honors this season. <USA South Conference Preseason Poll> Rank Institution (1st Place Votes) Pts. t-1. The Tornados have 29 players hailing from North Carolina, while the second-most athletes come to Brevard from Georgia (19). Modzelle Atkins, who serves as Assistant Linebackers Coach and Equipment Manager, is the primary recruiter for southern and middle Georgia. A productive offensive player at Mitchell County High School in Camilla, Ga., playing for coach Dondrial Pinkins, Atkins became a versatile college player at Brevard College. With the Tornados, he played all four years and began his career on the offensive side of the ball, scoring a rushing touchdown in his freshman and sophomore seasons. Assistant Head Coach Eric Gallon, who also works with the running backs, along with Special Teams Coordinator Luke Jaicks were also busy on the highways recruiting 16 Tornados from the Sunshine State. Gallon, a standout football prospect from Kathleen High School in Lakeland, FL, went onto play for coach Bill Snyder at Kansas State from 1989-92. A three-year letter winner, Gallon served as team captain his senior season and rushed for 1,960 with seven 100-yard plus rushing performances. After college he spent time with the Bill Parcell-led New England Patriots. Jaicks comes to Brevard from Scottsdale Community College and Southwestern Oklahoma State where he coached DBs and line- backers. <Brevard Roster by State> State No. North Carolina 29 Georgia 19 Florida 16 Tennessee 3 Alabama 2 Arizona 1 Virginia 1 District of Columbia 1 United Kingdom 1 Maryland 1 South Carolina 1 BREVARD TORNADOS 2017 GAME NOTES GAME-BY-GAME LEADERS (2016) Date Opponent Rushing Leader Passing Leader Receiving Leader Tackles Leader Sept. 1 East Stroudsburg Ru.: Johnson-45 Pa.: Gregory-15 Rec.: Drasser-9 TT: Jhon-9 Ru.: Healy-139 Pa.: Campbell-201 Rec.: Castillo-61 TT: May-10 Sept. 10 Emory & Henry Ru.: Johnson-129 Pa.: Craven-83 Rec.: B.
