    De inspiratie van en voor WKRP in Cincinnati In een tijd dat je als radionerd aangewezen was op obscure, gestencilde blaadjes als het Free Radio Magazine of het chiquere RadioVisie en Freewave om foto’s te zien van radiostudio’s, was het een sensatie om op televisie ineens naar WKRP te kunnen kijken. Deze Amerikaanse comedyserie ging over het wel en wee van één van de slechtst presterende radiostations in de stad Cincinnati, Ohio, met DJ Johnny Fever rockend (of slapend) in de prachtige studio, met twee robuuste draaitafels ter linkerzijde, een grote mixer met draaiknoppen, bandrecorders en een zwiepende microfoon aan een hengel. Je moest uiteraard wel op tijd je televisietoestel aanzetten want van opnemen en terugkijken was in elk geval bij ons thuis nog geen sprake. De serie moet ergens in 1978 en 1979 in Nederland zijn uitgezonden; geen idee meer door welke omroep, maar het zal de TROS of de VOO zijn geweest. WKRP was niet slechts een voor de serie verzonnen radiostation, maar geïnspireerd op werkelijke stations en personen. De bedenker van de comedyserie, Hugh Wilson, en de voornaamste schrijver, Bill Dial (die af en toe opdraaft als zendertechnicus - nomen est omen) hadden allebei bij de ‘echte’ radio gewerkt en verwerkten voormalige collega’s in de afleveringen. Genoemde ochtend DJ Dr. Johnny Fever, gespeeld door acteur Howard Hesseman, had ook in het echt kortstondig als DJ gewerkt en hetzelfde geldt voor ‘station manager’ Arthur Carlson. Eén van de bekendste afleveringen is die waarin bij wijze van publiciteitsstunt kalkoenen uit een helikopter werden gegooid (wat uiteraard gruwelijk misging: “As God is my witness, I didn’t know turkeys could fly.”).
