All children are welcome to stay with parents in the Sanctuary during worship. However, for parents of children ages 0-3 years who want nursery care, we have a well-equipped and professionally-staffed nursery at the end of the hall nearest the Sanctuary. Each child brought to the nursery is given a number; only the parents of the child can take the child from the nursery. If a parent is needed during worship, the child’s number will appear (in red LED’s) on the black panels beneath the hymn boards on both sides of the Chancel. Parents, please bring diapers, any snacks, and formula as needed for your child.

All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Sacrament. If you have not been baptized, please come to the Altar rail for a blessing during Holy Communion (place your arms across your chest to signify your desire for a blessing). If you would like to be baptized, please speak with the clergy after the service. To receive Holy Communion, accept the bread in your hand and place it in your mouth, then sip wine from the Chalice when it is brought to you (guide the Chalice to your mouth please), or hold the bread, dip it in the wine when the chalice comes to you, and place the bread with wine in your mouth. If you are allergic to wheat or are gluten intolerant, please let the person serving bread know to give you a rice wafer.

The Lessons A Reading from 42:5-9 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 112:1-9 Congregation & Choir 1 Hallelujah! Happy are they who|fear the Lord * and have great delight in|his commandments! 2 Their descendants will be mighty|in the land; * the generation of the upright|will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches will be|in their house, * and their righteousness will|last for ever. 4 Light shines in the darkness|for the upright; * the righteous are merciful and full|of compassion. 5 It is good for them to be gener|ous in lending * and to manage their af|fairs with justice. 6 For they will ne|ver be shaken; * the righteous will be kept in everlast|ing remembrance. 7 They will not be afraid of any|evil rumors; * their heart is right; they put their trust|in the Lord. 8 Their heart is established and|will not shrink, * until they see their desire up|on their enemies. 9 They have given freely|to the poor, * and their righteousness stands fast for ever; they will hold up their|head with honor. A Reading from :22-26,30-33,16:1-5 Then the apostles and the elders, with the consent of the whole church, decided to choose men from among their members and to send them to Antioch with Paul and . They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and , leaders among the brothers, with the following letter: ‘The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the believers of origin in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. Since we have heard that certain persons who have gone out from us, though with no instructions from us, have said things to disturb you and have unsettled your minds, we have decided unanimously to choose representatives and send them to you, along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have risked their lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. [5]

So they were sent off and went down to Antioch. When they gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. When its members read it, they rejoiced at the exhortation. Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. After they had been there for some time, they were sent off in peace by the believers to those who had sent them. Paul went on also to and to , where there was a named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the believers in Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him; and he took him and had him circumcised because of the who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they went from town to town, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in numbers daily. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn 656 Blest Are the Pure in Heart Franconia Holy ; John 10:1-10 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. ‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.’ Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Anne M. true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Mary, and was made man. The Offering The Holy Communion Offertory Holy God, We Praise Your Name arr. Anna Laura Page Saint Timothy’s Handbell Choir Presentation Hymn 118 (Stanza 2) Brightest and Best Star of the East The Great Thanksgiving, Prayer B (BCP 367)

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with and and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus S129 Powell

The people stand or kneel.

[9]

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Timothy and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread (BCP 364)

General Announcements (continued) Fifth Sunday Coffee Hour: Something new! A “fifth Sunday” only occurs a few times each year (January, April, July, October and December) and the Hospitality Ministry is introducing a new way to gather for fellowship on those special days. We will have a joint coffee hour today between the 8:00 and 10:00 Services and invite all attendees to stop by for fellowship and food. There will not be a coffee hour following the 10 am Service. So here’s what this means: Grab your name tag and stop by Henry Hall for an opportunity to mingle with your fellow parishioners. If you brought a treat you can bring it as well. We hope that the 8 a.m. attendees will linger a bit and that the 10 a.m. folks will come early so that we can get to know each other better. We will wind things up at 9:50 so that we have time to tidy up before the 10:00 Service begins. Questions? Want to help with the next one? Please contact Carolyn Hamm ([email protected]). King Cake As you may know, King Cakes are a tradition during Epiphany and honor the three kings. A small baby, symbolizing the baby Jesus, is hidden inside each King Cake. While custom holds that the person who ‘finds’ the baby will be rewarded with good luck, that person is also traditionally responsible for bringing the King Cake to the next gathering. For our coffee hour, whoever finds the baby will be responsible for bringing a King Cake to coffee hour the following week. This will continue until Lent. We will provide a recipe for those who want to bake a King Cake or they can be purchased from many bakeries, including Great Harvest Bread. Attention All Parishioners- New Church Directory- We Want You (to Participate!) St. Timothy’s is preparing a new, updated Church photo directory. Our own St. Tim’s photographers (Paige Williamson and Craig Dubishar) will be taking the portraits (family, individuals) starting Sunday, January 29 and every Sunday in February (i.e., five Sundays in a row) from 11:15 a.m. through 1 p.m. (starting just after the 10 o’clock worship service). We will also schedule a Saturday morning (TBD) for those that cannot make any of the five Sundays. The location will likely be in the Narthex. Paige will have a database entry system onsite whereby each family/participant will input their information (family names, and, if applicable, email address(es), cell phone number(s)). The plan is for this to be an internal directory only (i.e., only made available to St. Timothy’s parishioners and not publically published on the St. Tim’s website). Please RSVP with an expected date for your photographs (just in case we run out of time on any particular Sunday) (or if you have any questions) to Craig and Paige at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. Saint Timothy’s Pre-School Registration Registration for Fall 2017 classes at St. Tim’s Pre-School opened January 25 for church members. The preschool offers a part-day program for children three, four and five years old. Registration will open to the public on February 3. You can check out our website at www.sttimothyspreschool.com. Please call Monica Despins at 703-437-4767 for more information or to schedule a tour.
