Dynamic Generation of Musical Notation from MusicXML Input on an Android Tablet THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Laura Lynn Housley Graduate Program in Computer Science and Engineering The Ohio State University 2012 Master's Examination Committee: Rajiv Ramnath, Advisor Jayashree Ramanathan Copyright by Laura Lynn Housley 2012 Abstract For the purpose of increasing accessibility and customizability of sheet music, an application on an Android tablet was designed that generates and displays sheet music from a MusicXML input file. Generating sheet music on a tablet device from a MusicXML file poses many interesting challenges. When a user is allowed to set the size and colors of an image, the image must be redrawn with every change. Instead of zooming in and out on an already existing image, the positions of the various musical symbols must be recalculated to fit the new dimensions. These changes must preserve the relationships between the various musical symbols. Other topics include the laying out and measuring of notes, accidentals, beams, slurs, and staffs. In addition to drawing a large bitmap, an application that effectively presents sheet music must provide a way to scroll this music across a small tablet screen at a specified tempo. A method for using animation on Android is discussed that accomplishes this scrolling requirement. Also a generalized method for writing text-based documents to describe notations similar to musical notation is discussed. This method is based off of the knowledge gained from using MusicXML. -

Burton and Cindy Stankowski, San Diego Archaeological Center, Escondido, CA, USA ABSTRACT ________________________________________________________________ Primary data, though an essential resource for supporting authoritative archaeological narratives, rarely enters the public record. Lack of primary data publication is also a major obstacle to cultural heritage preservation and the goals of cultural resource management (CRM). Moreover, access to primary data is key to contesting claims about the past and to the formulation of credible alternative interpretations. In response to these concerns, experimental systems have implemented a variety of strategies to support online publication of primary data. Online data dissemination can be a powerful tool to meet the needs of CRM professionals, establish better communication and collaborative ties with colleagues in academic settings, and encourage public engagement with the documented record of the past. This paper introduces the ArchaeoML standard and its implementation in the Open Context system. As will be discussed, the integration and August 2010 online dissemination of primary data offer great opportunities for making archaeological knowledge creation more participatory and transparent. Open Search Environments: The Free Alternative to Commercial Search Services. Adrian O’Riordan ABSTRACT Open search systems present a free and less restricted alternative to commercial search services. This paper explores the space of open search technology, looking in particular at lightweight search protocols and the issue of interoperability. A description of current protocols and formats for engineering open search applications is presented. The suitability of these technologies and issues around their adoption and operation are discussed. This open search approach is especially useful in applications involving the harvesting of resources and information integration. Principal among the technological solutions are OpenSearch, SRU, and OAI-PMH. OpenSearch and SRU realize a federated model to enable content providers and search clients communicate. Applications that use OpenSearch and SRU are presented. Connections are made with other pertinent technologies such as open-source search software and linking and syndication protocols. The deployment of these freely licensed open standards in web and digital library applications is now a genuine alternative to commercial and proprietary systems. INTRODUCTION Web search has become a prominent part of the Internet experience for millions of users. Companies such as Google and Microsoft offer comprehensive search services to users free with advertisements and sponsored links, the only reminder that these are commercial enterprises. Businesses and developers on the other hand are restricted in how they can use these search services to add search capabilities to their own websites or for developing applications with a search feature. The closed nature of the leading web search technology places barriers in the way of developers who want to incorporate search functionality into applications. -

An extremely large amount of research has addressed some of these aspects either in isolation or as combinations of two of them. There are also more and more works studying systems where all three elements are present, but typically using ad hoc models and algorithms that cannot be easily transfered to other contexts. To address this heterogeneity, in this article we present a simple, expressive and extensible model for temporal text networks, that we claim can be used as a common ground across different types of networks and analysis tasks, and we show how simple procedures to produce views of the model allow the direct application of analysis methods already developed in other domains, from traditional data mining to multilayer network mining. This document provides general suggestions on the implementation of MusicXML 3.2 and MNX formats, hoping they can be more braille-transcription-friendly. But it doesn't limit to the requirement of music braille transcription. Some of the points may also benefit the common transformation of musical data to be more accurately and clearly. Note: The word “text” in this document specifically means all non-lyrics texts, such as titles, composers, credit page information, as well as expression / technique / instructional texts applied to a staff or the whole system. A. MusicXML 3.2 Suggestions 1. If possible, implement a flow to include all system-wide texts (such as tempo texts, stage indications), lines (such as a line with text “poco a poco rit.”) and symbols (such as a big fermata or breath mark above the whole system), like the "global" section of MNX, so that all things in it can affect the whole score instead of the topmost staff or (in orchestra) piccolo and first violin staves. This can also ease part extraction. The position of the elements can be placed using the forward command. (e.g. in SATB choir pieces: sometimes breathing marks, dynamics and wedges are only written once in Soprano but are meant to apply to all voices; and in orchestral scores, tempo texts and overall indications are written above piccolo and first violin; and some big fermata or breath marks appear above every instrument category).
