ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS July-September 2013 9 Ladies Retreat Weekend CPLO Roundtable Discussions An archdiocesan ladies retreat weekend took place at Bergkroon, Roundtable (RT) Discussion Series on Aspects of Political Leadership in South Africa Wellington (on Baine's Kloof Pass) between 26-28 July 2013. African Forum for Catholic Social Teaching (AFCAST), 28-29 May Two separate events were hosted, in collaboration with the Jesuit Institute of SA and AFCAST. The first event focused on the rel- evance of Catholic Social Teaching in African public life today; and the second looked more broadly at the contested role of religion in African public life. Guests included Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Judge Albie Sachs and the Iraqi Ambassador, Dr Hisham Al-Alawi.

School Violence in South Africa, 5th June A presentation by Ms Lezanne Leoschut, focused on the national research project conducted by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention. This event was well attended, and included a Member of Parliament from the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, who promised to bring the issues raised to the attention of the Committee. The research report highlighted that more than one million high school learners have fallen victim to some form of violence at schools; girls experienced slightly more incidents of violence; repeat victimization was common; most acts of violence or threats of violence happened within school confines; and the perpetrators were themselves often learners.
