  • WHOLE LOTTA MAN Marvin Rainwater
Chapter 8 – Marvin Rainwater 8 WHOLE LOTTA MAN Marvin Rainwater A larger-than-life character steeped in traditional country music, Marvin Rainwater started his hitmaking career with Gonna Find Me A Bluebird and The Majesty Of Love (a duet with Connie Francis), and went on to top the UK charts in 1958 with Whole Lotta Woman , but after a couple of smaller hits his popularity faded. Somewhere along the line, a real talent — still underrated to this day — missed its way. After battling throat cancer, Rainwater re-emerged during the rockabilly revival of the 1970s and nowadays continues to successfully combine his outside business interests with recording and performing. I was born Marvin Karlton Rainwater on July 2, 1925 in Wichita, Kansas. Mother's maiden name was Stella Arbell Miller and my father was Cicero Percy Rainwater. I had one older brother, Don (George Donald) who died last year and have two younger brothers, Ray (Percy Raymond) and Bob (Robert Eugene), and a sister, Patty (Patricia Lucille). Some say that our surname originated from English, some say French and some say Indian, but I don't know for sure. I am no relation whatsoever to Cedric Rainwater the bluegrass guitarist, as Rainwater was not his real name — he used it as a stage name. Father was an auto and truck mechanic and mother was a housewife. We lived in Wichita and Esben, Kansas; Muskogee and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. I studied classical piano when I was a little boy. My mama took in washings — which was a lot of work for her — and got us a piano.

“Carnegie Hall Concert with Buck Owens and His Buckaroos”—Buck Owens and His Buckaroos (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Scott B. Bomar (guest post) * Original album Original label Buck Owens and His Buckaroos In the fall of 1965, Buck Owens was the biggest country star in the world. He was halfway through a string of sixteen consecutive #1 singles on the country chart in the industry-leading “Billboard” magazine, and had just been invited to appear at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. Already designated a National Historic Landmark, the esteemed venue had hosted Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Bernstein, and Ellington. Owens recognized the honor of being asked, but instructed his manager, Jack McFadden, to decline the offer. “When they first started talking about it, it scared me to death,” he admitted in a 1967 radio interview with Bill Thompson. Buck was worried the Manhattan audience wouldn’t be interested in his music, and he wanted to avoid the embarrassment of unsold tickets. McFadden pushed him to reconsider. When Ken Nelson, Owens’ producer at Capitol Records, suggested they record the performance and release it as his first live album, Buck finally conceded. Buck Owens’ journey to the top of the charts and the top of the bill at the most revered concert hall in the United States began in Sherman, Texas, where he was born Alvis Edgar Owens, Junior in 1929. By 1937, the Owens family was headed for a new life in California, but they wound up settling in Mesa, Arizona, when a broken trailer hitch derailed their plan.

  • Traditional Song
3 TraditionalSong l3-9 Traditional Song Week realizes a dream of a comprehensive program completely devoted to traditional styles of singing. Unlike programs where singing takes a back seat to the instrumentalists, it is the entire focus of this week, which aims to help restore the power of songs within the larger traditional music scene. Here, finally, is a place where you can develop and grow in confidence about your singing, and have lots of fun with other folks devoted to their own song journeys. Come gather with us to explore various traditional song genres under the guidance of experienced, top-notch instructors. When singers gather together, magical moments are bound to happen! For Traditional Song Week’s ninth year and our celebration of The Swannanoa Gathering’s 25th Anniversary, we are proud to present a gathering of highly influential singers and musicians who have remained devoted over the years to preserving and promoting traditional song. Tuesday evening will be our big Hoedown for a Traditional Country, Honk-Tonk, Western Swing Song and Dance Night. Imagine singing to a house band of Josh Goforth, Robin and Linda Williams and Ranger Doug or Tim May, Tim O’Brien, and Mark Weems! So, bring your boots and hats, your voices and instruments, and get ready to bring on the fun! Our Community Gathering Time each day just after lunch affords us the opportunity to experience together, as one group, diverse topics concerning our shared love of traditional song. This year’s spotlight will feature folks who have been “on the road” and singing for quite a while.

  • JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911-1963) Music Publisher
JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911•1963) Music publisher, booking agent, long•time manager of the Grand Ole Opry, and promoter of Nashville’s music industry, was born in Buffalo Valley, Putnam County, TN. As a young man, Denny found work as a mail clerk with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, parent organization to WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. With growing interest in country music, Denny was running the WSM Artists Service Bureau by 1946, booking Opry talent and other WSM acts. Denny eventually managed the Grand Ole Opry itself. Denny, along with his predecessor, Jack Stapp, is responsible for updating the face of the Opry. As promoters and developers of talent, they helped to transform the Opry from a popular barn dance to a showcase of country superstars, ensuring its growth and long•term success. During their tenure, the cast grew enormously, most major stars became Opry members, and an Opry appearance became a must goal for many performers. In 1954 Denny and Opry star Webb Pierce formed Cedarwood Publishing Company, for a time the most important publishing house in Nashville. Driftwood Music, a companion firm, was a partnership between Denny and Carl Smith, another Opry star. These business interests led to conflict of interest allegations by WSM and eventually Denny’s dismissal. With his knowledge of WSM operations, Denny achieved immediate success as a booking agent. The Jim Denny Bureau served most of the artists Denny had signed while at the Opry. Billboard magazine estimated that, by 1961, the bureau was handling over 3,300 personal appearances worldwide.

  • Boots Randolph
2004 Induction Class Boots Randolph In 1927, Homer Louis Randolph was born in Paducah, Kentucky, and grew up in the rural area of Cadiz. Surrounded by a musical family, Homer, (or “Boots” as his brother called him), had many opportunities to explore his musical and creative talents. Boots played an array of instruments, but by the age of 16, he decided to focus his attention on the saxophone. While in the service he joined the Army Band, and later began working in a band with his brother. His unique style of sax playing caught the attention of friend and famed guitar player, Chet Atkins, who in 1958 helped Boots find work on Nashville recording sessions. It was his trademark tune, “Yakety Sax” that launched his career and enabled Boots to move to Nashville, becoming one of the most sought after studio musicians in the business. He was the first to play sax on Elvis’s recordings and the only one to ever play solo with him. Boots played sax on eight of Elvis’s movie soundtracks, in addition to playing with other top artists such as Chet Atkins, Floyd Crammer, Johnny Cash, Richie Cole, Pete Fountain, and Tommy Newsom, just to name a few. Boots Randolph played sax on Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman”, Al Hirt’s “Java”, REO Speedwagon’s “Little Queenie” and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ ‘Round The Christmas Tree.” Boots had a major impact on the use of the sax in pop and country albums making his own style a major part of the overall Nashville Sound.
