Don Briggs enters his 13th year as Northern Iowa's wrestling coach with the same enthu­ siasm and same expectations he did for his 12th. And that could be good news for the Panthers. Ed Ewoldt Scholarship Academic Honors In January of 1992, Northern Iowa officials announced the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team establishment of the.Ed Ewoldt Wrestling Scholarship, the first fully-endowed flnauguralyear1991) scholarship in the history of the University's athletics program. 1993 -Jamie Byrne (Honorable Mention) The scholarship was made possible by a $120,000 gift to the Northern Andrew Showalter (Honorable Mention) Iowa Foundation by Ron Magruder of Orlando, Aorida. Each year, beginning 1992 -Gary Steffensmeier (First Team) with the 1992-93 academic year, the Panther wrestling program has awarded 1991 -Gary Steffensmeier (First Team) a full scholarship from the interest generated by the gi~ Jamie Byrne (Third Team) Ewoldt began attending UNI, then known as Iowa State Teachers Cory Manning (Third Team) College, in 1948 and graduated in 1954, competing on the wrestling team his last two years. He went on to teach and coach at West Central-Maynard (IA) GTE Academic All-America Team High School from 1955-58 and Wheaton (IL) Central High School, where he (includes athletes from 16 NCAA-sponsored sports) coached Magruder, from 1959-88. "Ed has had a tremendous impact on my life," Magruder said, "and has 1992 - Gary Steffensmeier (Third Team) helped me get where I am today.
