Fires affect animals mainly through effects on their habitat. Fires often cause short-term increases in wildlife foods that contribute to increases in populations of some animals. These increases are moderated by the animals’ ability to thrive in the altered, often simplified, structure of the postfire environment. The extent of fire effects on animal communities generally depends on the extent of change in habitat structure and species composition caused by fire. Stand-replacement fires usually cause greater changes in the faunal communities of forests than in those of grasslands. Within forests, stand- replacement fires usually alter the animal community more dramatically than understory fires. Animal species are adapted to survive the pattern of fire frequency, season, size, severity, and uniformity that characterized their habitat in presettlement times. When fire frequency increases or decreases substantially or fire severity changes from presettlement patterns, habitat for many animal species declines. Certhia Familiaris
Report under the Article 12 of the Birds Directive European Environment Agency Period 2008-2012 European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Certhia familiaris Annex I No International action plan No Eurasian Treecreeper, Certhia familiaris, is a species of passerine bird in the treecreeper family found in woodland and forest ecosystems. It is a widespread breeder across much of Europe, but patchily distributed in the South-West. This species inhabits forest and woodland, generally requiring well-grown trees with many cracks and crevices in the bark for foraging, roosting and nesting. It tends to favour older stands of spruce (Picea), but habitat preferences are complex and apparently affected by presence or absence of Certhia brachydactyla (European Red List 2015). Certhia familiaris has a breeding population size of 2790000-5460000 pairs and a breeding range size of 2240000 square kilometres in the EU27. The breeding population trend in the EU27 is Stable in the short term and Stable in the long term. The EU population status of Certhia familiaris was assessed as Secure, because the species does not meet any of the IUCN Red List criteria for threatened or Near Threatened, or the criteria for Depleted or Declining (the EU27 population or range has not declined by 20% or more since 1980). The birding here started immediately outside of the airport parking lot, finding the wonderful Ibisbill, which we quickly located in the wide stream along the airport road. It seemed to be a cold spring, with quite an amount of snow still on the surrounding peaks. Our visit to the Cheli La (La means pass) was good for some new surprises like Snow Pigeon and Alpine Accentor. We found Himalayan White- browed Rosefinch feeding in an alpine meadow, and then suddenly two Himalayan Monals appeared and showed very well. Here we were happy with extra sightings of Blood Pheasant, Black Eagle, Blue-fronted Redstart, and Yellow-billed Blue-Magpie. After Paro, we started our journey east with a drive to Thimphu and Punakha, visiting Dochu La and Tashitang along the way. The birding in these places is nothing but spectacular with great sightings constantly. These lush green valleys are very photogenic, and many stops were made to take in all the landscapes. The birding was good here with excellent sightings of a crossing Hill Partridge, some exquisite Ultramarine Flycatchers, a close overhead Rufous-bellied Eagle, a surprise sighting of a day- roosting Tawny Fish-Owl, and some wonderful scope views of a party of Gray Treepies. -

42. Chickadees, Nuthatches, Titmouse and Brown Creeper These woodland birds are mainly year-round residents in their breeding areas. They become most apparent in fall and winter when all four types may occasionally be seen together, along with downy woodpeckers and kinglets, in mixed-species foraging flocks. In these groupings, the greater number of eyes may improve foraging efficiency and detect potential predators. Pennsylvania’s two chickadee species and the tufted titmouse belong to Family Paridae—omnivorous feeders that cache excess seeds in holes or bark crevices, remember the locations, and return later to eat the food. The two nuthatch species are in Family Sittidae. They glean insect food from the trunks of trees and also eat nuts. Their common name derives from the way they “hack” nuts apart using their stout pointed bills. Taxonomists place the brown creeper in Family Certhiidae, a group that includes ten species, eight of which inhabit Europe and Asia and another India and Africa. November 2013 An Introductory Comparison of Avian Species Australia and the USA The speaker for the November 18 meeting of the Oklahoma City Audubon Society will be OCAS member Gavin Small, a specialist in conservation management. A native of Australia, Gavin is now a resident of Midwest City. After retiring from the Royal Australian Air Force as a wing commander, he earned a Mast of Wildlife (Habitat) Management degree at Macquarie University, Sydney. He currently manages private land held under conservation covenants with State and Federal authorities where he is involved in all aspects of conservation management including pest control, management of contractors, wildlife survey and reporting. Gavin will be presenting taxonomic data from each country (Order, Family, Genera and Species) and looking at similarities and significant differences. The presentation will include photos of his favorite Australian species and others of selected species that are common to both nations. Our meetings are held September through June on the third Monday of each month. They begin at 7 p.m. at the Will Rogers Garden Center, I-44 and NW 36th Street. Visitors are always welcome. Christmas Bird Count It’s the time of year to gear up again for the Oklahoma City Christmas Bird Count. This year our count will be held on Saturday, 14 December 2013. I do have at least one minor problem: my computer crashed and we have not found any survivors yet, including my CBC files, although I do have some printed material from past years. I hope most of you will repeat counting in the same areas you did last year; call me if you do not recall what that was and maybe we can reconstruct your area from the printed materials I do have. -

During his high school years, he worked as a museum assistant under George Sutton and Gary Schnell at the University of Oklahoma. He later earned degrees from the University of Oklahoma (B.Sc. in Zoology), Brock University (M.Sc. – Parental care in Common Terns, under the supervision of Ralph Morris), and Simon Fraser University (Ph.D. – Selection on life history traits in Tree Swallows, under the supervision of Nico Verbeek). This was followed by a U. S. National Science Foundation Post – doctoral fellowship at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he studied life history evolution in Collared Flycatchers, and later a Fulbright Fellowship working on the reproductive ecology of tits (Paridae) in Namibia and Zimbabwe.
