HTML Attributes 4 w3schools.com HTML CSS MORE HTML Attributes ❮ Previous Next ❯ Attributes provide additional information about HTML elements. HTML Attributes All HTML elements can have attributes Attributes provide additional information about an element Attributes are always specified in the start tag Attributes usually come in name/value pairs like: name="value" The href Attribute HTML links are defined with the tag. The link address is specified in the href attribute: Example This is a link Try it Yourself » You will learn more about links and the tag later in this tutorial. The src Attribute HTML images are defined with the tag. The filename of the image source is specified in the src attribute: Example Try it Yourself » The width and height Attributes Images in HTML has a set of size attributes, which specifies the width and height of the image: Example Try it Yourself » The image size is specified in pixels: width="500" means 500 pixels wide. You will learn more about images in our HTML Images chapter. The alt Attribute The alt attribute specifies an alternative text to be used, when an image cannot be displayed. The value of the attribute can be read by screen readers. This way, someone "listening" to the webpage, e.g. a blind person, can "hear" the element. Example Try it Yourself » The alt attribute is also useful if the image does not exist: Example What happens if we try to display an image that does not exist: Try it Yourself » The style Attribute The style attribute is used to specify the styling of an element, like color, font, size etc. Example
I am a paragraph
Try it Yourself » You will learn more about styling later in this tutorial, and in our CSS Tutorial. The lang Attribute The language of the document can be declared in the
tag. The language is declared with the lang attribute. Declaring a language is important for accessibility applications (screen readers) and search engines:

...

The first two letters specify the language (en). If there is a dialect, use two more letters (US). The title Attribute Here, a title attribute is added to the
element. The value of the title attribute will be displayed as a tooltip when you mouse over the paragraph: Example
This is a paragraph.
Try it Yourself » We Suggest: Use Lowercase Attributes The HTML5 standard does not require lowercase attribute names. The title attribute can be written with uppercase or lowercase like title or TITLE. W3C recommends lowercase in HTML, and demands lowercase for stricter document types like XHTML. At W3Schools we always use lowercase attribute names. We Suggest: Quote Attribute Values The HTML5 standard does not require quotes around attribute values. The href attribute, demonstrated above, can be written as: Example Try it Yourself » W3C recommends quotes in HTML, and demands quotes for stricter document types like XHTML. Sometimes it is necessary to use quotes. This example will not display the title attribute correctly, because it contains a space: Example
Try it Yourself » Using quotes are the most common. Omitting quotes can produce errors. At W3Schools we always use quotes around attribute values. Single or Double Quotes? Double quotes around attribute values are the most common in HTML, but single quotes can also be used. In some situations, when the attribute value itself contains double quotes, it is necessary to use single quotes:
Or vice versa:
Chapter Summary All HTML elements can have attributes The title attribute provides additional "tool-tip" information The href attribute provides address information for links The width and height attributes provide size information for images The alt attribute provides text for screen readers At W3Schools we always use lowercase attribute names At W3Schools we always quote attribute values with double quotes Test Yourself with Exercises! Exercise 1 » Exercise 2 » Exercise 3 » Exercise 4 » Exercise 5 » HTML Attributes Below is an alphabetical list of some attributes often used in HTML: Attribute Description alt Specifies an alternative text for an image, when the image cannot be displayed disabled Specifies that an input element should be disabled href Specifies the URL (web address) for a link id Specifies a unique id for an element src Specifies the URL (web address) for an image style Specifies an inline CSS style for an element title Specifies extra information about an element (displayed as a tool tip) A complete list of all attributes for each HTML element, is listed in our: HTML Attribute Reference. ❮ Previous Next ❯ COLOR PICKER HOW TO Tabs Dropdowns Accordions Convert Weights Animated Buttons Side Navigation Top Navigation Modal Boxes Progress Bars Parallax Login Form HTML Includes Google Maps Range Sliders Tooltips Slideshow Filter List Sort List SHARE CERTIFICATES HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, jQuery, Bootstrap and XML. P1: OSO/OVY P2: OSO/OVY QC: OSO/OVY T1: OSO GTBL013-03 GTBL013-Jackson-v10 July 12, 2006 10:36 CHAPTER 3 Style Sheets CSS As we have learned, HTML markup can be used to indicate both the semantics of a document (e.g., which parts are elements of lists) and its presentation (e.g., which words should be italicized). However, as noted in the previous chapter, it is advisable to use markup predominantly for indicating the semantics of a document and to use a separate mechanism to determine exactly how information contained in the document should be presented. Style sheets provide such a mechanism. This chapter presents basic information about Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a style sheet technology designed to work with HTML and XML documents. CSS provides a great deal of control over the presentation of a document, but to exercise this control intelligently requires an understanding of a number of features. And, while you as a software developer may not be particularly interested in getting your web page to look “just so,” many web software developers are members of teams that include professional web page designers, some of whom may have precise presentation require- ments. Thus, while I have tried to focus on what I consider key features of CSS, I’ve also included a number of finer points that I believe may be more useful to you in the future than you might expect on first reading. While CSS is used extensively to style HTML documents, it is not the only style- related web technology.

  • Using Rdfa to Reduce Privacy Concerns for Personal Web Recommending
University of Bergen Master thesis Using RDFa to reduce privacy concerns for personal web recommending Author: Supervisor: Christoffer M. Valland Andreas L. Opdahl Department of Information Science and Media Studies June 2015 University of Bergen Abstract Faculty of Social Sciences Department of Information Science and Media Studies Master’s degree Using RDFa to reduce privacy concerns for personal web recommending by - Christoffer Valland The amount of available information on the web is increasing, and companies are expanding the way to both collect and use the information available. This is the situation for both personal information, and technological information such as HTML-documents. Throughout this paper, I will describe the development of a semantic web recommender system that aims to reduce the amount of personal information needed to provide personal web recommendations. Semantically marked up documents on the web contain information, which is not necessarily provided in a user interface. This means there are possibilities to expand the area of use for this technology. The use of Semantic Web-technologies can therefore contribute to reduce the need of giving away personal information on the web. This thesis is divided in two parts: The first part focuses on the development of a semantic application, and the new area of use of this technology. The other part focuses on how standard recommenders handle privacy concerns on the web. The thesis will provide a description of the development of the recommender system, as well as an explanation of online privacy and how different web service providers’ deals with it. The system uses an RDFa-API to collect semantic information available on web-documents, and further uses this information to provide recommendations for the users.
