NADAL, MEDVEDEV FACE OFF FOR FIRST TIME IN MONTREAL FINAL

• Two Top 10 players will square off for the very first time on one of the biggest stages in , as No. 1 seed and defending champion meets No. 8 seed in Sunday’s Coupe Rogers final. Nadal is the all-time leader with 34 ATP Masters 1000 titles, one more than ’s 33, and will try to pick up his 35th trophy at this level at an event he has already won four times (2005, 2008, 2013, and 2018). He has also reached a record-breaking 51st ATP Masters 1000 final this week, moving one ahead of ’s 50. Nadal did not have to play a semi-final match, as Gael Monfils withdrew from their Saturday night clash after suffering injury during the Frenchman’s lengthy Saturday afternoon quarter-final win over .

• To extend his lead in the all-time ATP Masters 1000 title standings, Nadal will have to overcome Medvedev, a player who will be contesting his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 final. However, despite that disparity in experience at this level, Medvedev has proven to be a formidable competitor on hardcourts. Medvedev led the ATP Tour in hardcourt victories last year (38) and is the leader so far this year as well, with 25 hardcourt match-wins. Medvedev defeated his fellow 23-year-old Muscovite in the semi-finals, meaning Medvedev will replace Khachanov as Russian No. 1 in the ATP Rankings on Monday. If Medvedev can defeat Nadal to win his fifth career singles title on Sunday (all coming on hardcourts), he would become the ninth player to win a maiden ATP Masters 1000 title over the last 20 events in the series.

• The team debut of and has gone perfectly this week, as they have reached the Coupe Rogers final, defeating defending champions and en route. To end the week as an undefeated team, Granollers and Zeballos would need to beat and in the final. The Dutchmen reached the final at ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo earlier this year, and Koolhof had another ATP Masters 1000 finalist showing in 2019, at Miami with . 23-YEAR-OLD RUSSIANS COME FULL CIRCLE IN COUPE ROGERS SEMIS

• World No. 8 Karen Khachanov and No. 9 Daniil Medvedev will contest a historic match at the Coupe Rogers on Saturday. Two Russians are in an ATP Masters 1000 semi-final for the first time in the 30- year history of the series. The winner will be the No. 1 player from Russia in the ATP Rankings on Monday. 23-YEAR-OLD RUSSIANS KHACHANOV, MEDVEDEV SEEK SEMI-FINALS

• Until 10 June, Russia had gone more than eight years without a player in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings. Two months later, 23-year-old Moscow natives Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev are ranked No. 8 and No. 9 respectively. The rising Russians will meet in the Coupe Rogers semi- finals if they win their matches on Friday. Medvedev opens play on Court Central against World No. 4 Dominic Thiem before Khachanov clashes with World No. 7 Alexander Zverev. Following his run to the Roland Garros quarter-finals, Khachanov emerged as the first Russian in the Top 10 since Mikhail Youzhny on 7 February 2011. When Medvedev joined Khachanov in the Top 10 on 15 July, they became the first Russian Top 10 duo since Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko on 11 October 2010.

• On the other half of the draw is four-time champion Rafael Nadal, who broke a tie with Roger Federer on Thursday by earning a record 379th ATP Masters 1000 win. Nadal faces familiar foe Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals, having beaten the Italian in 11 of their 15 prior match-ups. Though they’ve never met on the US Open Series, Nadal and Fognini’s lone US Open meeting was one of a kind. Fognini remains the only player to defeat Nadal from two sets down at a Grand Slam event, rallying past the Spaniard in the 2015 US Open third round. The last quarter-final on the order of play pits Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut against Gael Monfils. In the 2017 Montreal third round, Bautista Agut saved a match point to defeat Monfils 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(2) after two hours and 56 minutes on court.

TOP 3 SEEDS PLAY ON, AUGER-ALIASSIME HAS THURSDAY BIRTHDAY CLASH

• Ten of the Top 20 players in the ATP Rankings can be found in Thursday’s round-of-16 matches at the 2019 Coupe Rogers. The field is led by top seed and four-time ATP Masters 1000 Canada champion Rafael Nadal, as he seeks to defend the title he won last year at Toronto. World No. 2 Nadal, who has won the most ATP Masters 1000 titles (34) since the series began in 1990, improved his win-loss record at the event to 35-8 after his second-round win over Daniel Evans. The Spaniard will attempt to make the quarter-finals for the ninth time when he takes on on Court Central. Pella, who has won as many clay-court matches as Nadal has this year (21), is enjoying a breakthrough 2019, winning his first singles title at Sao Paulo and making his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon.

• No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem experienced a different kind of breakthrough on Wednesday – the Austrian won a match at ATP Masters 1000 Canada for the very first time. Thiem came into this week 0-5 at the event, but ousted home-country hope in three sets to notch a victory. The World No. 4 will go for two in a row when he meets No. 14 seed Marin Cilic in the third round. Cilic is a two- time quarter-finalist in Canada, with those showings coming a decade apart, in 2008 and last year.

• No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev is the most recent man to triumph on the Montreal grounds, having won the trophy in 2017, the last time the event was held in this city. Zverev will meet on Thursday, aiming to avenge a loss in their most recent meeting. Last month, Basilashvili won their semi-final at Hamburg, Zverev’s birthplace, en route to his second straight title at the clay-court event.

• The home country has one man left standing in the singles field: teenage sensation Felix Auger- Aliassime, who celebrates his 19th birthday on Thursday. The draw gifted Auger-Aliassime a chance to play someone other than a compatriot on his birthday, after getting past fellow Canadians and an injured in the past two days. However, the 21st-ranked teen will instead face Karen Khachanov, currently sitting at a career-high ranking of World No. 8. Khachanov moved into the third round by beating Stan Wawrinka for the first time after two losses against the Swiss star.

STATS OF THE DAY

o No. 8 seed Daniil Medvedev currently has the most hardcourt match-wins this season, extending that amount to 22 with his second-round win. He is the only one of the four Washington semi-finalists from last week to win a match in Canada this week (, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and all lost their Montreal openers). o Russians Karen Khachanov and Medvedev are at respective career-high rankings of No. 8 and No. 9. When Medvedev joined Khachanov in the Top 10 following Wimbledon, it marked the first time two Russians were ranked in the Top 10 simultaneously since Mikhail Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko in October of 2010. o Felix Auger-Aliassime is seeking his third Top 10 win on Thursday against Khachanov. Both of the #NextGenATP Canadian’s previous Top 10 wins came against Stefanos Tsitsipas this year. o Cristian Garin, who faces Medvedev in the third round, won his only previous match against a Top 10 player, when he defeated Alexander Zverev en route to his second title of the season at Munich. o maintained his perfect record against Borna Coric in the second round on Wednesday, moving to 4-0 against the No. 11 seed after another victory. The Frenchman is 2-2 against his next opponent, Fabio Fognini. Fognini got the 350th Tour-level win of his career on Wednesday.

TOP SEEDS NADAL, THIEM START MONTREAL CAMPAIGNS ON WEDNESDAY

• No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal and No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem take to Court Central on Wednesday to kick off their quests for the 2019 Coupe Rogers title. World No. 2 Nadal comes in as the defending champion, having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final last year in Toronto, and seeks his third title of 2019. The Spaniard is a four-time winner of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Canada, with his titles evenly split between Montreal (2005 and 2013) and Toronto (2008 and 2018). Nadal will face qualifier Daniel Evans on Wednesday; Evans is nearing the Top 50 after being unranked 15 months ago.

• World No. 4 Thiem enters Montreal having picked up his third title of the season just last week, on home soil at the clay-court event in Kitzbuhel. However, the Austrian’s performances in Canada have been markedly different from Nadal’s – Thiem has never won a match at the event in five attempts (although he was the first of the four Top 10 players Tsitsipas defeated in the Greek’s run to the final last year). On Wednesday, Thiem will face home favorite Denis Shapovalov, who had a breakthrough at Montreal two years ago when he upset Nadal en route to the semi-finals as a 143rd-ranked . Shapovalov had lost five straight matches before his first-round win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

• Tsitsipas, who had an electric run to his first ATP Masters 1000 final last year in Toronto, will play his first match at Montreal as the newly-installed World No. 5 against rising Polish player . Tsitsipas and Hurkacz met for the first time at the Next Gen ATP Finals just last year, and have since met twice this year as they both climb the rankings (Tsitsipas has won all three meetings). Two more former ATP Masters 1000 Canada finalists face each other on Wednesday, as 5th seed , the 2016 runner-up, meets Richard Gasquet, who reached the final in 2006 and 2012. Gasquet won their first six meetings, but Nishikori has won three of their last four encounters.

• For the second day in a row, #NextGenATP star Felix Auger-Aliassime will face a fellow Canadian in Montreal. After extending his head-to-head record against Vasek Pospisil to 3-0 after a whisker-thin victory via a final-set tiebreak, the 18-year-old will now meet Canadian No. 1 Milos Raonic. Raonic, who made the Montreal final in 2013, is ranked No. 19, just two spots ahead of Auger-Aliassime in the ATP Rankings. The compatriots have squared off once before, with Raonic winning at Indian Wells last year – coincidentally, after Auger-Aliassime had beaten Pospisil in the previous round. Raonic also gave Auger-Aliassime a walkover into the Stuttgart final earlier this year, due to a back injury.

STATS OF THE DAY

o No. 8 seed Daniil Medvedev currently has the most hardcourt match-wins this season, with 21. Stefanos Tsitsipas is second with 20 hardcourt victories. o No. 7 seed Fabio Fognini would claim the 350th Tour-level win of his career with a victory over qualifier on Wednesday. o Daniel Evans is 3-7 against Top 10 players but is seeking his first win over a Top 5 player (0-4). o Denis Shapovalov is 2-9 vs. players ranked in the Top 10. His best win by ranking was over No. 2 Rafael Nadal at 2017 Montreal. o Hubert Hurkacz has already notched his first 3 Top 10 wins this season (3-6 vs. Top 10 players overall). He defeated Kei Nishikori in consecutive events at Dubai and ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells, as well as getting a win over Dominic Thiem at ATP Masters 1000 Miami. o Thiem won his 14th career ATP Tour singles title last week at Kitzbuhel – his first title in his home country. He is the first Austrian to win at Kitzbuhel since Thomas Muster took the title in 1993. For the latest stats, facts and figures about the ATP Tour, follow @ATPMediaInfo on Twitter.

ZVEREV AND KYRGIOS PLAY OPENERS, FELIX AND VASEK CLASH IN CANADA

• Two Canadians face off in the first round of the Coupe Rogers on Tuesday when current Top 25 player Felix Auger-Aliassime meets former Top 25 player Vasek Pospisil on Court Central. Despite 18- year-old Auger-Aliassime’s relative newness to the ATP Tour, he and Pospisil have already met twice, with the #NextGenATP contender having triumphed both times. In fact, Pospisil faced Auger-Aliassime in the first round of Wimbledon this year, which was the 29-year-old’s first match of the season after a protracted injury layoff. Pospisil posted his best career result at an ATP Masters 1000 event at Montreal, having reached the 2013 semi-finals in this city before falling to another Canadian, Milos Raonic. Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime is on a tear: he reached his first three ATP Tour singles finals this year, and in May he became the youngest player to break into the Top 25 since Lleyton Hewitt in 1999. The match winner will face a compatriot in the second round as well: Canadian No. 1 Raonic.

• Nick Kyrgios also kicks off his Coupe Rogers campaign on Tuesday, two days after he won his second title of the year at Washington. After slipping to No. 72 in the ATP Rankings in February – his lowest position since 2014 – the Australian notched two ATP 500 titles this year at Acapulco and Washington, claiming five Top 10 wins in those two weeks alone. Kyrgios now finds himself back in the Top 30 for the first time since October of last year. Kyle Edmund will be Kyrgios’s Tuesday opponent; the Brit also posted a solid result at Washington, reaching his second quarter-final of the season.

• The second round gets underway on Tuesday night when Alexander Zverev, the last man to claim the ATP Masters 1000 Canada championship trophy in Montreal, squares off against . Zverev, who had a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed, claimed the second of his three career ATP Masters 1000 titles at Montreal in 2017, but fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals when attempting to defend his title last year in Toronto. Zverev beat Norrie in their only Tour-level meeting to date, when the German defeated the Brit to reach this year’s Acapulco final, which he lost to Kyrgios.

STATS OF THE DAY

o Cameron Norrie, who faces World No. 7 Alexander Zverev in the second round, is 1-6 against Top 10 players. Norrie defeated then-No. 10 John Isner in the 2018 Lyon quarter-finals for his only Top 10 win. o Vasek Pospisil, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 25 on 27 January 2014, would notch his 100th Tour-level victory with a win over compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime. o Pospisil is seeking his first Tour-level victory of the year after undergoing surgical microdiscectomy to repair a herniated disk on 18 January. His only Tour-level match thus far in 2019 has been his first-round loss to Auger-Aliassime at Wimbledon. o Guido Pella has 21 clay-court match wins in 2019 (tied with Rafael Nadal for third-most, behind Dominic Thiem with 23 and Albert Ramos-Vinolas with 22) but is only 4-5 on hardcourts this year. His 4 wins on hard is the second-lowest total of the current Top 35 players (Juan Martin del Potro is 2-1 on hard in 2019). o , who plays on Tuesday, has the fourth-most hardcourt match-wins on the ATP Tour in 2019. Albot, who won his first ATP Tour singles title at Delray Beach earlier this season, has 17 hardcourt victories this year, trailing only Daniil Medvedev (21), Stefanos Tsitsipas (20), and Roger Federer (18). o Albot achieved a new career-high ranking of World No. 39 on Monday. Other players in the Montreal main draw who attained brand-new career-high rankings this week are Tsitsipas (No. 5), (No. 25), and qualifier Soonwoo Kwon (No. 97, Top 100 debut).
