Lucindale Area School Equine Program Term 2 In Term 2, Lucindale Area School will again be offering our Equine program for students. It will run on Wednesday afternoons for 6 weeks. During the program students will be exposed to the following areas;  General horse handling and safety  Basic riding, balance, seat position  Different disciplines of horse riding  Novelties and games using horses There will be a small cost to take part in the program and places will be limited! The program caters for a range of abilities and riding levels. Students who have a horse are encouraged to bring it along to ride. Please contact the Front Office to register your child’s position in the program. ** Please be aware that some sessions will run during the school day, at lunch time and after school. If you have a preference re time, let the Front Office know and we will try to accommodate your request. **

Celeste Pietsch Lucinda Smith Program Coordinator 08 87662084 ICAS 2019 The International Competitions and Assessments (ICAS) are again being offered to students at Lucindale Area School. These competitions are run by the University of NSW and are designed to challenge capable students across a range of subjects. Unlike the NAPLAN tests, which are designed to assess students against benchmarks, the ICAS tests are focussed upon high achieving students and the papers are very challenging, even for teachers! The tests are voluntary and each year students from Lucindale take on the challenge, often excelling in their results. The tests are subsidised by the school but we ask for a contribution from parents to help offset the costs. The cost for each test is $14.50 and we are asking for a payment of $10 for each test that your child sits, the school will subsidise the remainder.

Tests are set in Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing and are available for students in Year 2 up to Year 12. The tests take place during lessons in school time in Term 2 and results are available only between 3-19 September 2019. The results are extremely informative and make comparisons across the school, the state and Australia.

The tests are not a compulsory part of the curriculum and I stress that students find them quite difficult. They do however give students who are achieving to a high standard a chance to expand upon their school work. As the tests can be quite daunting for younger (and older) students, please consider carefully whether a student will benefit from undertaking the test before enrolling and paying for the student to do each test. Please be aware that the tests occur during a short period of time and you may wish to consider how many your child will be comfortable completing.

Further information is available from the school (contact Jane Gill) or from the ICAS website (http:// www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas). If you would like your child to attempt the tests please complete the form below and return it with the payment for the tests to the Front Office by 5th April to ensure tests are ordered before the closing date.

~ Year 4/5 Field Day Friday Code Club Excursion ~

On Friday afternoon, we met Nicola at the Elad Shed, she talked to us about Code Club and how we can help to start a club at our School. We have been using Code Club online and have experimented with the programs this term. So it was great to meet Nicola to show us how to use them. We used touch screen tablets, the tablets were all named after famous Scientists. There were some people we knew but some we hadn’t heard of before so we are going to find out about these people. We worked together and used the tablets to make a Wheat Harvester simulator in Scratch. We had to move the harvester, then make crops on the screen and finally get the harvester to cut the crop. Nicola talked to us about the different areas we’d need to use to complete the activity. She reminded us that it didn’t matter if the code didn't work on our first try, we just had to work out what wasn’t working right and try again. It tested our patience at different times but we persisted! Thank you to Nat Hann for helping us whilst we were there.

Mackenzie ~ I thought it was fun that we could actually code the harvester to move and we could change the score when harvesting the crop so we could get more points. It was good to have the steps printed out to help us code. I learnt how to make objects move and swing around following the mouse pointer. Maddison ~ It was a good experience, when we did it, I thought it was really fun. We got to learn about different areas that we didn’t know about before. It was good that we could work in groups so we could share our ideas. Sometimes we had some trouble getting the right code so we kept trying until we got it. Code Club is a free website : https://codeclubau.org/

Pastoral Care Corner

Hi. I would like to preface this article by saying that the reason why it did not make it into the last newsletter is because I was not doing exactly what it is about!!! I am being kind to myself however, and after feeling disappointed for a little while, I moved forward with the mindset to keep trying. Nowadays we all tend to be busy, overburdened, and perhaps stressed. It’s in the DNA of our modern societies. However, busyness is a choice. Working, cooking, cleaning and caring for our families is important of course but we can choose to write some space into our to-do lists. We must slow down before we speed up. We must live smart and work smart. Do the right things, not a lot of things. A great analogy is the cheetah, which is the fastest land-living animal on the planet. Despite its amazing body, it does not just set off and sprint when it spots prey. Instead it slows down. Really slow. It crouches down and for minutes moves in slow motion while all the muscle fibers in its body warm up. Then, when ready, everything explodes and in seconds it accelerates faster than a sports car. When we slow down momentarily and let go of doing things, we can focus and choose our actions out of clarity and freedom, rather than impulses. To do this we all need to practice self-care and manage stress but especially our young people as learning and wellbeing cannot be separated. I found this list of ideas and I loved it because of its simplicity. Experience and enjoy.

Watch a sunrise, listen to a cat purring, go barefoot, sing a song, go to the beach, whistle, hike in the woods, blow bubbles, focus on the positive, give a hug, ask for help, tell a joke, listen to music, take a walk, paddle a canoe, dance, meditate, play with a dog, have a cup of tea, complete something, lie in the sunshine, take a break, talk to a friend, throw a ball, hum a tune, take a deep breath, keep a journal, play a drum, write a poem, get up early, prioritize, practice patience, stroke a pet, read some fiction, do Tai Chi, lend a hand, have an idle chat, sit still, plant a flower, see a movie, get a massage, watch fish swim, set limits, play a sport, say "No", paint a picture, walk in the rain, take a country drive, enjoy a reverie, take a bubble bath, go to bed on time, walk a labyrinth, ask for what you need, write a letter, watch a fire or candle burn, stretch, take a nap, give a compliment, smile, feed birds and squirrels, take some photos, sleep in, pull some weeds, make a list, clean something, run in the park, arrange flowers, eat some chocolate, tell a story, do a puzzle, practice kindness, focus on your senses, laugh out loud, watch a sunset…

The NAB AFL Auskick program makes learning to play AFL fun, safe and easy for boys and girls. Through weekly coaching sessions they will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social and safe environment. The AFL Auskick program has centres that operate all over the country. Children will learn the fundamental motor skills vital for future physical activity and sport participation as well as learning how to interact with other children as part of a team in small group activities. The program also provides a great opportunity for parents to interact with their kids through the activities, have the opportunity to make new friends, learn about the game and spend quality time with their children. To register for Lucindale Auskick go to http://www.aflauskick.com.au/ search for Lucindale FC. Auskick starts Thursday 2nd May at 3.30pm and run for all of Term 2. LIBRARY LOVERS’ DAY/WEEK It was great to see the students getting involved in Library Lovers’ Week. They particularly enjoyed being a part of ‘a blind date with a book.’ Not knowing the title of the book, they chose from the brief descriptive words on the front. Congratulations to the three lucky raffle winners: Primary: Austin Hann; Senior: Angelique Dellaney; Community: Mr. Paul Nicks.

NEW PCs for Library Public Library Services have just finished installing 4 new PCs and a Wireless Printer, with up to date software. Two PCs have replaced our Public Access computers, supplied by PLS and the other two replace our Admin. computers, one purchased by the Library and the other with funds supplied by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council. Our thanks and appreciation must go NLC for their continued support with funding. The printer is a Multi-Function Device, including a printer, scanner and copier.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre- schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
