4 Research 4.1 Statement on Research Funerary Archaeoentomology is the discipline that studies insects from human remains, tombs, mummies and other burials. These studies allow investigation of funerary practices, thanatology (the process of decaying over time https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanatology ) and of the hygienic and social conditions of populations. The aim of my project is the development of a new DNA extraction protocol that allows to prevent morphological destruction of from modern and museum collections and archaeological samples in order to combine repetitive morphological and molecular analysis. The possibility to extract the DNA, preserving the integrity of the samples, gives to this study an application in different branches of knowledge like Funerary Archaeoentomology and Forensic Entomology and allows the species identification of museum and private collections.

4.2 Experience - Field collection: participation to National and International entomological sampling (Italy, UK, Peru) - Experimental design: preparation and optimisation of DNA extraction and amplification protocols from entomological samples (modern and ancient) - Laboratory practice: insects breading and dissection, entomological collection maintenance, samples preparation, DNA extraction (commercial Kit and homemade buffer), amplification (PCR, RT-PCR), purification, DNA hybridization, immunohistochemistry, microscopy (optical microscopy, digital microscopy, electron microscopy, confocal microscopy) -Laboratory management: risk assessment, reagent purchase, material storage, equipment maintenance, providers management -Data analysis: statistical analysis (GraphPad, Excel, SPSS, R), bioinformatics, image analysis (Image J, Photoshop, Illustrator) -Student supervision: undergraduate and master students, practical support and teaching
