A Review of Southern Ocean Squids Using Nets and Beaks
Marine Biodiversity (2020) 50:98 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12526-020-01113-4 REVIEW A review of Southern Ocean squids using nets and beaks Yves Cherel1 Received: 31 May 2020 /Revised: 31 August 2020 /Accepted: 3 September 2020 # Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung 2020 Abstract This review presents an innovative approach to investigate the teuthofauna from the Southern Ocean by combining two com- plementary data sets, the literature on cephalopod taxonomy and biogeography, together with predator dietary investigations. Sixty squids were recorded south of the Subtropical Front, including one circumpolar Antarctic (Psychroteuthis glacialis Thiele, 1920), 13 circumpolar Southern Ocean, 20 circumpolar subantarctic, eight regional subantarctic, and 12 occasional subantarctic species. A critical evaluation removed five species from the list, and one species has an unknown taxonomic status. The 42 Southern Ocean squids belong to three large taxonomic units, bathyteuthoids (n = 1 species), myopsids (n =1),andoegopsids (n = 40). A high level of endemism (21 species, 50%, all oegopsids) characterizes the Southern Ocean teuthofauna. Seventeen families of oegopsids are represented, with three dominating families, onychoteuthids (seven species, five endemics), ommastrephids (six species, three endemics), and cranchiids (five species, three endemics). Recent improvements in beak identification and taxonomy allowed making new correspondence between beak and species names, such as Galiteuthis suhmi (Hoyle 1886), Liguriella podophtalma Issel, 1908, and the recently described Taonius notalia Evans, in prep. Gonatus phoebetriae beaks were synonymized with those of Gonatopsis octopedatus Sasaki, 1920, thus increasing significantly the number of records and detailing the circumpolar distribution of this rarely caught Southern Ocean squid. The review extends considerably the number of species, including endemics, recorded from the Southern Ocean, but it also highlights that the corresponding species to two well-described beaks (Moroteuthopsis sp. -

Hoff and Bradley Stevens ABSTRACT: Epibenthic and demersal assemblages of fish and invertebrates on the Patton Seamount in the Gulf of Alaska, U.S.A., were studied in July 1999 using the Deep Sea Research Vehicle Alvin. Faunal associations with depth were described using video analysis of 8 dives from 151 to 3,375 m. A cluster analysis applied to the observations suggests three benthic faunal communities based on depth: 1) a shallow-water community (151–950 m) consisting mainly of rockfishes, flatfishes, sea stars, and attached suspension feeders, 2) a mid-depth community (400–1500 m) also consisting of numerous attached suspension-feeding organisms such as corals, sponges, crinoids, sea anemones, and sea cucumbers and fish such as the sablefishAnoplopoma fimbria and the giant grenadier Albatrossia pectoralis both of which were aggregated over a relatively narrow depth range, and 3) a deep-water community (500–3,375 m) consisting of fewer attached suspension feeders and more highly mobile species such as the Pacific grenadier Coryphaenoides acrolepis, popeye grenadier C. cinereus, Pacific flatnose Antimora microlepis, and large mobile crabs Macroregonia macrochira and Chionoecetes spp. -

A total of 48 specimens were caught with dorsal mantle length (ML) ranging from 4-36 mm. They occurred with amean density of 0.15 ind. x 1000 mJ and were present in 38% of 33 RMT-8 samples. G. glacialis was the only cranchiid squid found in the Weddell Sea between 66" and 74"s. Its early life stageswere concentrated in the layers below the summer thermocline (>50 m) and body sizes appeared to increase towards deeper water layers. For biochemical analyses, nine specimens of G. glacialis (ML 6-18 mm) were sampled in the eastern Weddell Seabetween 185-520mwater depth in JanuaryFebruaIy 1985. Totallipidcontentsrangedfrom8%-11% dry weight (DW) with phospholipids being the main lipid component (43-56% of total lipid). Storage lipids (triacylglycerols) made up 18-26% of total lipid. The relatively low lipid contents may reflect the early developmental stage of the specimens examined. The data presented give the first information on geographical and vertical distribution patterns of early life stages of G. -

Iverson 1971 1 2 ABSTRACT The authors investigated food habits of albacore, Thunnus alalunga, bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, and bonito, Sarda chiliensis, in the eastern North Pacific Ocean during 1968 and 1969. While most stomach samples came from fish caught commercially off southern California and Baja California, some came from fish taken in central Califor- nia, Oregon, and Washington waters. Standard procedures included enumeration of food items, volumetric analysis, and measure of frequency of occur- rence. The authors identified the majority of forage organisms to the specific level through usual taxonomic methods for whole animals. Identification of partially digested animals was accomplished through the use of otoliths for fish, beaks for cephalopods, and the exoskeleton for invertebrates. A pictorial guide to beaks of certain eastern Pacific cephalopods was prepared and proved helpful in identifying stomach contents. This guide is presented in this publication. All rights reserved Aspects of the Natural History of Pelagic Cephalopods of the Hawaiian Mesopelagic-Boundary Region 1 RICHARD EDWARD YOUNG 2 ABSTRACT: Pelagic cephalopods of the mesopelagic-boundary region in Hawai'i have proven difficult to sample but seem to occupy a variety ofhabitats within this zone. Abralia trigonura Berry inhabits the zone only as adults; A. astrosticta Berry may inhabit the inner boundary zone, and Pterygioteuthis giardi Fischer appears to be a facultative inhabitant. Three other mesopelagic species, Liocranchia reinhardti (Steenstrup), Chiroteuthis imperator Chun, and Iridoteuthis iris (Berry), are probable inhabitants; the latter two are suspected to be nonvertical migrants. The mesopelagic-boundary region also contains a variety of other pelagic cephalopods. Some are transients, common species of the mesopelagic zone in offshore waters such as Abraliopsis spp., neritic species such as Euprymna scolopes Berry, and oceanic epipelagic species such as Tremoctopus violaceus Chiaie and Argonauta argo Linnaeus. Others are appar ently permanent but either epipelagic (Onychoteuthis sp. C) or demersal (No totodarus hawaiiensis [Berry] and Haliphron atlanticus Steenstrup). Submersible observations show that Nototodarus hawaiiensis commonly "sits" on the bot tom and Haliphron atlanticus broods its young in the manner of some pelagic octopods. Growth increments found in otolith sections, however, were difficult to interpret. The von Bertalanffy growth function for A. pectoralis otolith section age estimates did not fit size-at-age data well. To validate age and longevity estimates, ages were determined using the radioactive disequilibria of 210Pb: 226 Ra in otolith cores from adult A. pectoralis. Radiometric and growth increment ages agreed for 6 of the 12 pooled otolith age-groups. Radiometric age determination confirmed longevity to at least 32 years for females and 27 years for males. Additional age and longevity estimates are still necessary to develop an informed fishery management plan for A. pectoralis. A Generic Revision of the Cranchiidae (Cephalopoda; Oegopsida)
BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 30(2): 365-412, 1980 A GENERIC REVISION OF THE CRANCHIIDAE (CEPHALOPODA; OEGOPSIDA) Nancy A. Voss ABSTRACT This paper is the first in a monographic study of the cephalopod family Cranchiidae. Thirteen of the 41 nominal genera are recognized as valid for the family: Cranchia, Lio- cmnchia, Leachia, He/icocranchia, Bathothauma, Sanda/ops, Ligllriella, Taonius, Ga/iteu- this, Mesonychoteuthis, Egea, Megalocmllchia and Teuthowenia. A full definition is given for the family and each valid genus; diagnoses are given for the two subfamilies Cranchiinae and Taoniinae. A generic key is accompanied by illustrations of a representative species of each genus. A comprehensive historical resume for the family is given and generic interre- lationships are discussed. The subfamily Taoniinae comprises roughly three groups of genera based primarily on the development and relationships of the posterior end of the gladius (Ianceola and conus) and the fins and on the photophore pattern on the eye. He/icocrallchia, Bathothauma, Sandalops and Liguriella form a loose group of the more primitive genera that possess a short conus (lost in Bathothallma) and small subterminal or terminal fins. Taollills, Galitellthis and Me- sOllychoteuthis form a group of specialized genera in which the conus and associated terminal fins are elongate and the large suckers of the club are modified into hooks or suckers with one or two large, central, hook-like teeth. Of these, Ga/itellthis and Mesollychoteuthi.\· are closely related. In the third group formed of Egea, Megalocranchia and Teuthowenia, the fins elongate and simultaneously extend up the lateral margins of the mantle as the conus elongates. -
