Zoos, because of how they are uniquely positioned, are often referred to as the “smart asset” in communities. They help drive local and regional economies and create jobs. They are a teaching tool for environmental education and conservation, and they provide the public with an essential connection to the natural world. Brevard County is fortunate not only to have an expanding zoo with new animals and new exhibits arriving frequently, but also to have one that is part of a national certification benchmarking program. The Brevard Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, and these facilities stand out in their field in various ways. For instance, fewer than 10 percent of the roughly 2,800 animal exhibitors licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are AZA–accredited. In general, these zoos are leaders in animal care, conservation, and family run. They contributed more than $22 billion to the U.S. economy in 2016, the latest available figure. “The Brevard Zoo continues to be a premiere interac- tive experience inclusive to every member of the commu- nity, and a destination for those visiting Brevard County,” said Leasha Flammio–Watson, president of the Flammio Financial Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services Inc. in Melbourne. “The Brevard Zoo is an amazing resource for the community.” The Flammio Financial Group has stepped up to be the $20,000 Title Sponsor for the upcoming “Safari Under the Stars,” a benefit for the Brevard Zoo. “I can’t tell you what a source of pride it is for me, my company and my husband, Greg, to be the Title Sponsor for the second year,” she said. “Safari Under the Stars continues to raise the bar on how to showcase one of the community’s best assets. The event will not only be the highlight of the year with celebrity Jeff Corwin, but it will BBN photo — Adrienne B. CORVALLIS, Ore. — Agility Robotics, a company launched at Oregon State University that designs and builds walking and running robots, has raised $8 million in new funding. Playground Global is the lead investor, with Sony Innovation Fund and existing investor Robotics Hub also participating. Playground founder Bruce Leak will join Agility’s board of directors. The series A investments will accelerate product, technology and business development and bring Agility Robotics’ total amount raised to $8.792 million, according to Agility founder Jonathan Hurst, associate professor of March of Dimes mechanical engineering at OSU. “Agility Robotics is solving the mobility problem faced by robots to allow machines to work with humans, for new ad emailed humans and around humans,” said Hurst, who worked with the OSU Advantage Accelerator in starting his company. “Robotic, legged locomotion will enable a major FULL COLOR transformation of our world, with early applications in real–time telepresence and data collection in human and natural environments such as disaster sites or forest fires; warehouse logistics, moving boxes and loading and unloading; and then on to larger applications such as logistics and package delivery for fast and inexpensive 24/7 service, and in–home robots for telepresence and assis- tance.” Hurst, the Dean’s Professor at the College of Engineer- ing, said walking robots will one day be a common sight — much like the automobile, with a similar impact. The limiting factor to date, he said, is the science and under- standing of legged locomotion, not the speed of computing, strength of materials, or power of motors. But key research at Oregon State has enabled a breakthrough. “Our technology captures the same fundamental principles underlying legged locomotion in animals,” he said. ATRIAS, a research robot developed at the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory at Oregon State, was the first robot to reproduce human gait dynamics. Following ATRIAS was Cassie, the first product for research and development capable of walking and running. “Agility Robotics is building the engineering know–how and the organizational capacity to capture and implement these research discoveries and create robots that will be pragmatically useful in the real world,” Hurst said.
