Brooks Koepka Sponsor exemption Brooks Koepka followed an opening-round, 4-under 67 with a 7-under 64 Friday, despite bogeys at Nos. 6, 11 and 14. At 11-under 131, he will begin Saturday’s third round with a one-stroke lead.

The last player to win on the PGA TOUR playing on a sponsor exemption was at the 2010 FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Koepka, a 23-year-old Florida native, won three events on the Challenge Tour in 2013, the second of which being a record 10-stroke victory at the Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana. With the three Challenge Tour wins, Koepka earned his European Tour card for the remainder of the 2013 season and all of 2014.

Koepka, a three-time All-American at Florida State University, is making his fourth career PGA TOUR start this week, and first outside the majors. After missed cuts at the 2012 U.S. Open and 2013 Open Championship, Koepka most recently finished T70 at the 2013 PGA Championship.

On the various worldwide Tours Koepka has played in 2013, he has teed it up in 15 different countries.

Second-Round Notes Since moving to CordeValle GC in 2010, the only second-round leader to hang on for the win was Rocco Mediate in 2010. After 36 holes, Mediate led by three strokes over Ryuji Imada.

Additional Player Notes Last year’s Frys.com Open co-runner-up Jason Kokrak tapped in for an eagle-3 from 9’’ at his last hole of the day, No. 9, to get to 10-under through 36 holes. He’ll begin the third round one stroke behind Brooks Koepka.

Kokrak, who made it through the first three FedExCup Playoffs events in 2013, remains in search of his first PGA TOUR win. His career-best finish came with a share of second place at CordeValle GC last year.

Robert Garrigus made nine birdies and one bogey en route to an 8-under 63 in round two, putting him at 9-under through 36 holes. He trails Brooks Koepka by two strokes. His 63 is his lowest score since shooting 61 in round three of the 2012 Humana Challenge (T2).

Garrigus is making his fifth start in the Frys.com Open, and first since 2010 when the event moved to CordeValle GC (T66). He is in search of his second career PGA TOUR title this week (2010 Children’s Miracle Network Classic).

Andres Gonzales birdied his final four holes in round two (Nos. 6-9) to make a 12-stroke improvement from the first round, posting a 9-under 62. Gonzales is in this week’s field by virtue of his top-10 finish at the (T8), his most recent start on the PGA TOUR before this week.

Defending champion Jonas Blixt struggled in round two, taking a 1-over 72. He’s 1-under through 36 holes.

Michael Putnam, the 2013 Web.com Tour Regular Season leading money winner, is at T21 through 36 holes, seven off the pace. John Peterson, leading money winner following the Web.com Tour Finals, is also at T21.

Playing on sponsor exemptions, Max Homa (69-68—137) and Justin Thomas (72-70—142) are both making their PGA TOUR professional debuts this week.

Several players on Major Medical Extensions returned to the PGA TOUR this week, including two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen (75-70/MC), Spencer Levin (71-65/136) and Paul Goydos (70-73/MC).

Making his debut as a PGA TOUR member, 21-year-old Hideki Matsuyama is 6-under through 36 holes, five off the lead. He is coming off a 1-3-1 performance for the International Team in last week’s Presidents Cup. Matsuyama turned professional in 2013, finishing inside the top 10 at both the U.S. Open and en route to earning his PGA TOUR card via the non-member FedExCup points list.

Y.E. Yang made a hole-in-one (the first of the 2013-14 season) on the seventh hole in the second round with an 8-iron from 150 yards.
