Hall of Fame Lesson Plan: Language Arts/English

Lesson Ideas: • Connecting with a Sports Figure o Have students pick their favorite o Have students in class or for homework research a Tennessee athlete that played their favorite sport. o Have students write a paragraph/essay with a hand-drawn picture about that athlete’s history and what qualifies them to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. o What attributes does the student share with the athlete? o How are they alike? How are they different?

• Acceptance Speech o Have students write a one page acceptance speech that they would present to their class if they were accepted into the Hall of Fame. o Who would they thank and what message do they want to leave with their audience? o Classroom Discussion: What does a person wear to give a speech? What should a person not wear to give a speech? o What should a person do while giving a speech? (eye contact, stand still, talk slow, etc.)

• Reflection o How do the Olympics promote peace, unity and friendship amongst countries and their leaders? o What difficulties could the host country face by hosting the Olympics? o If you participate in one Olympic sport, which sport would you choose and why? o If there would be one country you could visit, which country would it be and why? o Name three ways you can personally promote good sportsmanship among athletes.

• Champion o What qualities do champions possess? o How do champions become champions? o To be a champion, do you have to play a sport? o Who is your personal champion?
