Si el año pasado os decía que a pesar de tener el sentimiento de haber hecho mucho trabajo y de haberlo hecho bien, no estábamos del todo satisfechos, este año veni- mos a vosotros con la íntima satisfacción de haber alcanzado buena parte de lo que nos habíamos propuesto. Hemos rubricado el trabajo con la consecución, creo que de manera brillante, de la Liga española de fútbol. Hemos tenido el acier- to de construir un equipo que une calidad con juventud y experiencia, que son los mejores ingredientes para afrontar con esperan- za el futuro más inmediato. En las secciones, el balance que os presentamos también es muy bueno. El balonmano y el hockey sobre patines han respondido de manera excelente a las expectativas. Sólo el baloncesto no ha estado a la altura de lo que os merecéis. Somos conscientes de los errores que hemos cometido y ya le hemos puesto remedio. No volverá a pasar. Los resultados económicos son muy buenos. En dos años, hemos recorrido el camino que pretendíamos haber hecho en tres años. Hemos dado la vuelta a la situación. Hemos vuelto a poner el Barça en el grupo pionero de los clubes de fútbol europeos en lo que concierne el volumen de ingresos. Un hecho imprescindible si pretendemos –que lo pretendemos– competir deportivamente. No acabaré este saludo sin hacer una referencia a las dimisiones de cinco directivos. Les agradezco el trabajo hecho y la decisión de abandonar un proyecto que habían dejado de compartir. Nos queda aún mucho trabajo para hacer. Tenemos el reto de la continuidad, de alargar en el tiempo ésta ilusión que compartimos. La mejor garantía que podemos ofrecer es la fidelidad al proyecto inicial y la unidad del barcelonismo. ¡Visca el Barça! La mentalidad ganadora, el espíritu de supe- ración y el juego colectivo fueron claves para ganar un título muy deseado por la afición. El equipo acabó la liga con 84 puntos, récord absoluto de puntos en una liga de 20 equipos. Fue el equipo más goleador (73), menos goleado (29) y consiguió un total de 25 victorias, nueve empates y sólo cua- tro derrotas. Además, Víctor Valdés ganó el Trofeo Ricardo Zamora como portero menos goleado del campeonato y Samuel Eto’o se confirmó como uno de los grandes goleadores europeos, con 25 goles.

It’s always been the case that when I travel, I like to read novels that are region-specific. That’s been true for a long time; but in the last few years, as I became more aware of the lack of translated literature and the need to read more diversely, I made my plan even more particular. Now, when I travel somewhere, I want to read books not only set in the place, but written by someone who lived or was from there, preferably translated from the original language. So when I went to Mexico City from Chicago, I read Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros; when I went to England, I read Jane Austen. And when I went to Spain, I dug deep into lists of Spanish authors, of books to read before, during, and after my trip that were written by Spanish authors and were set in Spain. I included books written in Catalan and Galician, as they are important national identities of regions that have also pushed for independence. I should note that I attempted to make my list inclusive of authors of color, but struggled to find translated non-white authors writing in Spain. If you have recommendations, please share them with me on Twitter—I would love to hear them! It’s also worth noting that there are many fantastic authors and novels out there that I would have loved to dig into on my trip and on this list, but that are still untranslated, highlighting once again the importance of an international outlook for our reading lists.
