2008 FRIENDS OF SCOUTING CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF! The 2008 Council Friends of Scouting Chair, Wes Hilton, will “kick-off” the 2008 campaign on December 12th. District Key 3’s, District Finance Chairs, District FOS Chairs and District Zone Coordinators are all invited to attend.

Friends of Scouting (FOS) is the largest fundraiser to support Scouting in the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council. The campaign runs from January through June each year and every family is asked to participate with a suggested contribution of $195. This money helps to operate the Scouting program, for over 21,000 youth in the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council.

Funding provides affordable camping experiences for Cubs and Scouts; supports training programs; support and recruiting materials for Packs and Troops; Accident and Liability Insurance; the Council Service Center; the support staff that maintain registration; advancement and camping records; a team of professionally trained staff that leads the way in recruiting, training, and the promotions of Scouting activities; and more.

Please make sure your Unit FOS Chair attends your District FOS kick-off in January to pick-up Unit FOS packets and to receive training and support to insure a successful unit FOS campaign. Please contact your District FOS Chair or District Executive for your kick-off date. 2008 FOS KEY LEADERSHIP

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE PAID TO GO CAMPING? As we usher in the New Year, the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council is already thinking of the New Summer! With nine weeks of adventure offered at Camp Wolfeboro, and six weekends of fun planned for Camp Lindblad, the Council is in need of energetic and enthusiastic new staff members for the summer of 2008. If you are interested in making new friends, spending a summer in the great outdoors, developing leadership and team-building skills, and working with youth and adults of all ages, Wolfeboro and Lindblad are perfect for you. Not only will you encounter meaningful challenges, learn and teach new skills, and work with experienced individuals from all over California and the United States, you will be doing this all while earning job experience and preparing yourself for the future! Why work at a fast food or retail establishment that focuses on sales when you can have opportunities like these that will prepare you for more meaningful endeavors? If you’d like to be on staff, but don’t know where you’d like to work, the Mountaineer program at Camp Wolfeboro may be for you. The Mountaineer program (formerly Counselors in Training) introduces volunteers to counseling merit badges and leading songs while having fun in the various activities that camp has to offers. For one, three- week session Mountaineers will work in program areas including Waterfront, Ecology-Conservation, Shooting Sports, Handicraft, Trailhead, and Scoutcraft. You must be 14 or older by June 1st to be a Mountaineer, and there are only 40 spots available, so act quickly to sign up! If you, or someone you know is interested in working on the Camp Staff as a full-time staff member or as a Mountaineer, fill out the following application, and send one to a friend too! The completed applications should be mailed or dropped off at the Council Office at 800 Ellinwood Way, Pleasant Hill 94523 and addressed to myself, Jason B. Lewis, the Program Director. If you need more applications, you can download a copy from our online website at http://www.bsa-mdsc.org/files/campstaff.pdf and email it to me at [email protected]. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 925-674-6100. We’re looking forward to a great summer, and we’d love to take you along! Good Scouting! Jason B.
