No. 82 Summer 2017 www.swanland.info always up to date From the Chairman of the Village Association The village is looking particularly attractive at the moment, not just around the pond area but in residential areas too where the bulb displays have been stunning. Mal Cracknell and his few helpers have created beautiful floral displays around the pond. The Pond Spring Maintenance Day brought together many volunteers to help to re- plant areas, thin out the foliage, tidy up the surroundings and check the drainage inlets. The litter picking group, organised by Linda Mitchelson, ensures that the centre of Swanland is litter-free on a more or less daily basis. We thank these groups for their continuing hard work and commitment to the village. To mark the occasion of Mal Cracknell's retirement from organising Swanland's Open Gardens, the SVA presented him with a garden clock. Hundreds of visitors and villagers have so enjoyed looking around many gardens over the years, and we thank Mal for his excellent organising skills that made this such a popular event. Phil White's afternoon slot on Radio Humberside was broadcast from Swanland recently. Many kind folk which the radio show had selected, mostly from information inside the SVA Newsletter, agreed to be interviewed. Lara King, the presenter that day, really enjoyed her time in the village, and particularly liked the picturesque setting by the pond from where the programme was broadcast. Thanks to Kate too for organising the event so seamlessly. Thank you! Jan Rogerson 634 583 1 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017 A Special Thank You John and Brenda Gaze have now relocated to Brough and we wish them well in their new home. Also, we must thank John for his major role in the village at Christmas time where he played his jolly persona for 39 years! Well done John, for giving us all such happy memories. SVA Membership Report Recruitment and renewals are improving – but as always, could be better. If you are renewing or applying for membership, please use the form on the back of this newsletter. If you have trouble remembering these things, do please pop a note in with your renewal requesting a ‘pink form’, which I will include with your membership card, and you can then set up a Standing Order with your bank to automatically renew your membership in January, when it falls due. We cannot do Direct Debit, for various technical reasons, so it has to be a Standing Order, which, of course, is completely within your control, and if you do online banking you can set it up on line using the information on the pink form – et voilà! All done! Thank you. Louise Macfarlane (Membership Secretary) 632 800 Swanland Library Swanland Library will have new hours from the 1 July 2017. It is the first village hall in the East Riding of Yorkshire to receive this prestigious quality accreditation which is the highest that can be obtained. The hall has previously been awarded Hallmark 1 and 2. The impending retirement of a number of trustees (including the Treasurer and the Secretary) has provided an ideal opportunity for residents of Swanland to be of service to their village by volunteering to become a trustee of Swanland Village Hall. A letter to residents of the village inviting them to volunteer to be a trustee of the village hall is on the opposite page. To enquire about booking the hall for a wedding or other activities contact: Booking secretary 634 409 or www.swanlandvillagehall.info. Swanland Show Saturday 9th September at St Barnabas Church Hall Swanland Show has many talented people who enter and these talents range from artists, photographers, bakers, floral artists, experts in handicraft and flower and vegetable growers. They all put on a great display year after year, but please don't let the talent of Swanland put anybody off entering for fear of looking inferior! The show committee love it when new people enter. It needs new people to help carry on this long village tradition, and it makes things a little more exciting and not so predictable. If you're not sure what a village show is, visit another local show to get an idea. Skidby, Cottingham and North Ferriby all have shows before Swanland, which is quite late on the showing calendar. Please take a look at our schedule to see if there are any classes that appeal to you. It's not too serious and everyone is friendly and welcoming. Schedules are available from June onwards in Swanland outlets or via the show website. For further information regarding the show please contact: Paul Neve (chairman) 633 639 or [email protected] 4 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017 Village Hall Trustees 5 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017 Ferriby and Swanland Scouts Ferriby & Swanland’s Beaver Colony have taken part in sleeping over at The Deep. The Beavers went on a tour of all the fish and wildlife, learning new and fun facts, and were in awe of the size of the sharks. After spending the night sleeping in the tunnel they got the pleasure of seeing the penguins at feeding time. The Scouts, Cubs and Beavers meet weekly at Scout Headquarters, Swanland Playing Fields. We have a challenging summer ahead due to a leak in the pond wall somewhere above the 20cm mark. We’ve ruled out leakage from the main inlet pipes, but have been unable to carry out dye tests elsewhere because water levels have been too low. The back wall of the pond remains a prime suspect for leakage due to its poor state of repair. Thankfully, ERYC have accepted responsibility for the wall in front of Mere Flats and have agreed to carry out appropriate repairs once the holly tree is removed. The wall in front of the village hall, which appears to be the Parish Council’s responsibility, will need to be assessed before a course of action can be agreed. If you could help as a pond volunteer, please contact Alyson on 634 168. 6 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017 Swanland in Bloom We are very fortunate for the second year running that Deepdale Garden Centre, at Barton on Humber, are donating the plants, compost, liners and labour to fill the village hay racks. Deepdale is only 9 miles from Swanland and you will find interesting perennial plants, shrubs and trees, bedding plants and hanging baskets. A plant that caught my attention was a Japanese flowering cherry...Prunus x subhirtella Fukubana. The flowering branches start 4 inches above the compost and the plant can be pruned to whatever height you want. It might be best to write the name down if you buy one as any pronunciation could be misconstrued!! Deepdale also have a fantastic café serving a range of delicious cakes and light lunches. If possible please support them as they have supported Swanland and pay them a visit. For your Sat Nav the post code is DN18 6ED and mention you are from Swanland. We would be pleased to have more volunteers for the group who look after the area around the pond – as much, or as little, time that you can spare would be much appreciated. Someone is working around the pond most Tuesday mornings, please contact: Mal Cracknell 632 282 or [email protected] The Lunch Club There are still places available. This is mainly (but not exclusively) for elderly people living on their own. The venue is Christ Church hall (by the pond). Contact Linda White 634 222 or Pat Burman 631 131 for further details. FOUND : one small pine box with drawer inside, beautifully dovetailed at the joints. Please call 634 863 if you have lost this.
