From the Chairman of the Village Association

The village is looking particularly attractive at the moment, not just around the pond area but in residential areas too where the bulb displays have been stunning. Mal Cracknell and his few helpers have created beautiful floral displays around the pond. The Pond Spring Maintenance Day brought together many volunteers to help to re- plant areas, thin out the foliage, tidy up the surroundings and check the drainage inlets. The litter picking group, organised by Linda Mitchelson, ensures that the centre of Swanland is litter-free on a more or less daily basis. We thank these groups for their continuing hard work and commitment to the village. To mark the occasion of Mal Cracknell's retirement from organising Swanland's Open Gardens, the SVA presented him with a garden clock. Hundreds of visitors and villagers have so enjoyed looking around many gardens over the years, and we thank Mal for his excellent organising skills that made this such a popular event. Phil White's afternoon slot on Radio Humberside was broadcast from Swanland recently. Many kind folk which the radio show had selected, mostly from information inside the SVA Newsletter, agreed to be interviewed. Lara King, the presenter that day, really enjoyed her time in the village, and particularly liked the picturesque setting by the pond from where the programme was broadcast. Thanks to Kate too for organising the event so seamlessly. Thank you! Jan Rogerson 634 583 1 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017

A Special Thank You John and Brenda Gaze have now relocated to Brough and we wish them well in their new home. Also, we must thank John for his major role in the village at Christmas time where he played his jolly persona for 39 years! Well done John, for giving us all such happy memories.

SVA Membership Report Recruitment and renewals are improving – but as always, could be better. If you are renewing or applying for membership, please use the form on the back of this newsletter. If you have trouble remembering these things, do please pop a note in with your renewal requesting a ‘pink form’, which I will include with your membership card, and you can then set up a Standing Order with your bank to automatically renew your membership in January, when it falls due. We cannot do Direct Debit, for various technical reasons, so it has to be a Standing Order, which, of course, is completely within your control, and if you do online banking you can set it up on line using the information on the pink form – et voilà! All done! Thank you. Louise Macfarlane (Membership Secretary) 632 800

Swanland Village Hall Swanland Village Hall has been successful in being awarded the ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural ) quality standard - Hallmark 3. It is the first village hall in the East Riding of to receive this prestigious quality accreditation which is the highest that can be obtained. The hall has previously been awarded Hallmark 1 and 2. The impending retirement of a number of trustees (including the Treasurer and the Secretary) has provided an ideal opportunity for residents of Swanland to be of service to their village by volunteering to become a trustee of Swanland Village Hall. A letter to residents of the village inviting them to volunteer to be a trustee of the village hall is on the opposite page. To enquire about booking the hall for a wedding or other activities contact: Booking secretary 634 409 or www.swanlandvillagehall.info. Swanland Show Saturday 9th September at St Barnabas Church Hall Swanland Show has many talented people who enter and these talents range from artists, photographers, bakers, floral artists, experts in handicraft and flower and vegetable growers. They all put on a great display year after year, but please don't let the talent of Swanland put anybody off entering for fear of looking inferior! The show committee love it when new people enter. It needs new people to help carry on this long village tradition, and it makes things a little more exciting and not so predictable. If you're not sure what a village show is, visit another local show to get an idea. Skidby, Cottingham and North Ferriby all have shows before Swanland, which is quite late on the showing calendar. Please take a look at our schedule to see if there are any classes that appeal to you. It's not too serious and everyone is friendly and welcoming. Schedules are available from June onwards in Swanland outlets or via the show website. For further information regarding the show please contact: Paul Neve (chairman) 633 639 or [email protected] 4 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017

Ferriby and Swanland Scouts Ferriby & Swanland’s Beaver Colony have taken part in sleeping over at The Deep. The Beavers went on a tour of all the fish and wildlife, learning new and fun facts, and were in awe of the size of the sharks. After spending the night sleeping in the tunnel they got the pleasure of seeing the penguins at feeding time. The Scouts, Cubs and Beavers meet weekly at Scout Headquarters, Swanland Playing Fields. Swanland Pond Partnership As the reeds, grasses, yellow flag iris and marsh marigolds establish themselves for another year we’re mindful of all the hard work our volunteers undertake to keep the pond healthy and attractive. We have a challenging summer ahead due to a leak in the pond wall somewhere above the 20cm mark. We’ve ruled out leakage from the main inlet pipes, but have been unable to carry out dye tests elsewhere because water levels have been too low. The back wall of the pond remains a prime suspect for leakage due to its poor state of repair. Thankfully, ERYC have accepted responsibility for the wall in front of Mere Flats and have agreed to carry out appropriate repairs once the holly tree is removed. The wall in front of the village hall, which appears to be the Parish Council’s responsibility, will need to be assessed before a course of action can be agreed. If you could help as a pond volunteer, please contact Alyson on 634 168.

Swanland in Bloom We are very fortunate for the second year running that Deepdale Garden Centre, at Barton on , are donating the plants, compost, liners and labour to fill the village hay racks. Deepdale is only 9 miles from Swanland and you will find interesting perennial plants, shrubs and trees, bedding plants and hanging baskets. A plant that caught my attention was a Japanese flowering cherry...Prunus x subhirtella Fukubana. The flowering branches start 4 inches above the compost and the plant can be pruned to whatever height you want. It might be best to write the name down if you buy one as any pronunciation could be misconstrued!! Deepdale also have a fantastic café serving a range of delicious cakes and light lunches. If possible please support them as they have supported Swanland and pay them a visit. For your Sat Nav the post code is DN18 6ED and mention you are from Swanland. We would be pleased to have more volunteers for the group who look after the area around the pond – as much, or as little, time that you can spare would be much appreciated. Someone is working around the pond most Tuesday mornings, please contact: Mal Cracknell 632 282 or [email protected] The Lunch Club There are still places available. This is mainly (but not exclusively) for elderly people living on their own. The venue is Christ Church hall (by the pond). Contact Linda White 634 222 or Pat Burman 631 131 for further details.

Current Development News – June 2017 The Application by Gladman for 150 Dwellings on West Field Farm has been unanimously REFUSED by ERYC on 20 April. Well done to all those who helped to bring about this successful outcome. To fight undesirable applications we do not have to plaster the village with gaudy notices but just stand united with our Parish Council and Ward Councillors. The applicant has up to 6 months to lodge any appeal. An Inspector REFUSED a recent appeal in South Cave (where Gladman’s tactics were to try to discredit the ERYC plan). This may well have positive implications for any Swanland appeal. East Riding Planning officers are well aware of this tactic and are robustly defending the Local Plan.

The following Swanland areas are identified on the East Riding Local Plan.

SEAT - Providing Care, Education and Hope Fellow Trustees, John and Shirley Waters, have just returned from a successful week in Nairobi. They report that both schools are thriving and full of hopeful, happy children and staff – 700 children and 50 staff in total now between the two schools! This is only possible thanks to the donations from local people to support this work. It is truly effective and life changing! We do need more support and we would like to fund a water supply to the Swanland school to save them buying it in containers (cheaper in the long run) – can you help? The money you donate (99.5%) goes straight to the schools and we can see the difference it makes to these children from extreme poverty in circumstances far worse than our own. We have 80 local supporters – we’d love to make that over 100! If you are able, then please consider what you can give, just £15/month covers all the costs for each child’s education and food. Contact: Richard Swain 634 306, [email protected] or give online via www.swanlandschoolnairobi.org. Swanland Heritage Centre (by the pond) The Heritage Centre is very grateful to Mr Godfrey Cook who has very generously donated hard copies of all of the 1941 National Farm Survey data of Swanland, which run to some 150 A3 sheets. This information gives an invaluable snapshot of the twenty-two farms and smallholdings in and around wartime Swanland. Special binders have been purchased to house these records which are available to be perused by anyone interested. The Centre also thanks Mr Chris Hill who has enabled two features to be added to the photo galleries on the website http://swanlandheritage.info - census data of Swanland families from 1841 to 1911 and old maps of

Swanland, 1824, 1855 and 1910 which can be overlaid on a current map to show village development. Call into the Centre - we are open on Fridays 2pm – 4pm and Saturdays 10am – 12noon. We look forward to seeing you. Neighbourhood Watch Warmer weather means extra care is needed to stop thieves entering properties through open windows and unlocked doors. Easy to fit, inexpensive door/window sensor alarms, to warn of people entering, are available at DIY shops. Also ensure that garages, sheds and garden equipment are kept secure. Please inform the police of any suspicious activity, including anti-social behaviour, by calling 999 (crime in progress/emergency) or 101 (non- emergency information). Regular Police Surgeries are held, usually at Olivers Coffee Shop. For information about South Hunsley Area Police, see www.humberside.police.uk/teams/south-hunsley. For more information about Swanland NHW or becoming a Street Coordinator contact Deborah Parry 632 576 or [email protected]. Free ERYC window stickers are available for all households from Deborah, indicating that you do not buy from doorstep sellers. The next NHW meeting is Thursday 22 June at 7.30pm at Christ Church Hall; all are welcome. Fundraising in Memory of Jamie Loncaster On 14 March 2017, (the 2nd anniversary of Jamie’s death), a memorial football match and bun sale was held at South Hunsley School. A massive £750 was raised and will be split between the three charities that the family support in Jamie’s memory. Over Easter, staff and customers at McColl’s Convenience Store in Swanland raised £85 for CRY too. 400 heart screening places are being provided locally via CRY in November 2017 and the £14,000 cost is being covered by donations to Jaime’s Fund at CRY. If you are aged between 14-35 years old, please keep a check on the website www.jamieloncaster.co.uk and various social media pages. The family extend their continued thanks to the community.

Christ Church (by the pond) Christ Church, together with its three partners in the Hull URC Team, is about to embark on a new venture. In conjunction with an organisation called “Time for God”, the Team will recruit four gap year students from overseas to work on various projects to raise the profile of the churches in their local area. So far two students from Germany have been recruited, and they will start at the beginning of September. It is hoped details of the remaining two will be announced shortly. All the students will live in Peter’s House, the URC former manse in the Avenues. In Swanland the students will help with the current initiatives such as the Youth Club (for details see http://christchurchswanland.btck.co.uk/), Cereal Church (9am, 4th Sunday in the month) and monthly mid-week Film Night (7pm, 3rd Tuesday). Their availability will provide a resource for the church to engage in further outreach activities. 12 SVA Newsletter –Summer2017

Swanland Screen and Swanland Live Shows Another season of films and live shows has ended at Swanland Village Hall and we hope you enjoyed our choices. The small group of SVA volunteers who bring these events to you are now taking a well-earned break, apart from choosing the menus for the coming Autumn. We are all getting older and when we have to step down it would be reassuring to know that there will be someone willing to take over. There is not too much effort involved as we share the tasks: we choose the shows and films; book the Village Hall; place advertisements on-line and in local magazines; produce the posters and distribute them around the area; buy the refreshments; go to the hall on the night to meet the performers and feed them; set up the hall and, on film nights, the meeting hall where the refreshments are served; collect the tickets/cash at the door; clear up afterwards; send the reports to ArtERY (who provide all these wonderful shows for us); cash up, take the cash to the SVA Treasurer for him to pay the bills. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those folks who just wander into the kitchen to help with the washing up and those who stay behind to help with the clearing up. It is very much appreciated. We get so much pleasure from this and feel it would be a shame if it all had to cease when we were no longer able to undertake those tasks. If you could help to bring the average age of this group to under 70 years old and feel you could make a regular commitment and would like to know more, please contact: Yvonne 634 863 or [email protected]

Swanland Women’s Institute Apart from our own monthly programme much is going on as usual in our East Yorkshire Federation. Two Swanland members recently attended the Spring Meeting in at which one of the speakers was Julie Summers. This is the lady who wrote ‘Jambusters’, the book upon which the ITV series “Home Fires” was based. She has written other historical books about WWII but became intensely interested in what the WI was able to contribute during the last war. She was an excellent and amusing speaker. Other federation activities include ‘Walking the Wolds Way’ in stages, visiting Tophill Low Nature Reserve in the hope of seeing otters, archery and having a go at pottery workshops. Back in Swanland we have a day-time outing on 5 July, a talk entitled “Born Free” in August and a Crafts evening in September. Our meetings begin at 7.30 pm at Christ Church hall by the pond. See posters or village website, www.swanland.info, for our full programme and contact details. Please come and join us! Mires Beck Nursery At Mires Beck Nursery in North Cave, we’re busy delivering Yorkshire grown hardy perennials and herbs to garden centres throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. In our very popular herb range we have over 40 varieties. Mires Beck is a registered charity providing practical horticultural work experience every week for over 90 people with learning difficulties and disablements. The Friends of Mires Beck raise much needed funds for important projects and membership is just £10 a year.
