Formed in 1889, ABRSM are proud to continue to be the global leader in setting the standard for learning music. Today we will be listening to performances from a number of highly talented musicians who epitomise the quality of musicianship associated with the achievement of our grades. However, these concerts are firstly a tribute to your hard work as performers and the support and guidance you receive from your teachers and parents. ABRSM’s mission is to inspire more people to participate in music so it is amazing to see the culmination of everyone’s committed hard work come together in the musical performances we will hear today. Over the last 90 or so years, a significant partnership has developed between teachers, students, parents and ABRSM in India and I am pleased to see that this partnership continues to grow as ever more young people become involved in enjoying and making music. My warmest congratulations to everyone involved in this concert and to the wider music education community in India on all its musical achievements. We hope that your journey with us may continue to flourish long into the future. MICHAEL ELLIOTT Chief Executive ABRSM MESSAGE How does one put into perspective a legacy of generations of music education? Through the fulfilled dreams of millions of children expressing their creative best with the wonders of music since 1889 with ABRSM! The tradition of music and music education in India is as old as time itself. A tedious yet fulfilling process of musical education in India since ancient times ensures that India continues having a vibrant and diverse musical legacy. ABRSM is a new chapter of this long story and journey of music education in India while continuing to uphold the highest standards of musical education known in India since time immemorial. Music as one of life’s highest experiences helps children find their place in time and space. Through music, children find a scope for endless creativity and give their creative pursuits an edge for excellence. A wholesome and vibrant experience of music education ensures that children develop an excellent memory, enhanced language skills, more precise hand-eye coordination, elevated mental processing, a strong sprit of team work and great study habits. Music education as an experience changes the lives of children for the best, thus enabling them to be future ready. Music itself is a very powerful language, not just for communicating a message, but for retaining a message deep into the consciousness of a listener. Music can be a huge catalyst for positive social transformation and creating environmental consciousness. I am confident that through ABRSM, we will have more and more change makers and leaders using the language of music to make this world a better place for all life. RICKY KEJ Grammy® Award Winning Composer UNESCO MGIEP “Global Ambassador for Kindness” UNICEF “Celebrity Supporter” MESSAGE At Lancers we strive to ensure that our students are given opportunities to shine beyond the confines of the classroom. We believe that to nurture a passion is the only way to create genius. The recent collaboration with ABRSM is one such endeavour. The collaboration between Lancers International School and ABRSM opens a pathway for quality musical pedagogy which further allows students here at Lancers to learn so much more than what is in their textbooks. Our association with ABSRM is one more in a long line of non-scholastic activities that give the students the edge they need in the world today. We acknowledge the fact that a grade from ABRSM carries a worldwide recognition and that the exams are designed to motivate learners to develop their musical prowess. Our aspirations go beyond achieving certification. As a leader, I believe that creating and responding to music provides for developing life skills that one aspires to possess. The purpose is to enable all of our students to acquire abilities to create music that will inspire others, to go beyond the norms of traditional and lead a better and more expressive world. Students provided with opportunities to express themselves and be acknowledged globally is a legacy parents and schools should encourage. And what more means of expressing oneself can one ask for in creating music. YOGESH SINDHWANI Head of School Lancers International School, Gurugram MESSAGE Plato is credited with telling us that music and rhythm find their way into the secret spaces of our soul. Being a universal language, music speak to us in multiple ways, creates a climate of positivity and enriches our lives by connecting us to people and cultures across the globe. At The British School New Delhi, we place great value and emphasis on our extensive music curriculum and strive to engage even the youngest of our learners in an enriching creative experience. Music education is an integral component of a student’s journey through school not only because it nurtures their talent but also because it provides them with a free and creative space for self-expression and enjoyment. Music is offered as an examination subject of study for our IGCSE and IB students aligned with our vision to provide a holistic academic offering to all students. ABRSM has been an amazing partner in the school’s ‘musical’ journey. It has offered our students a high quality opportunity to train with excellent teachers and sit graded examinations and receive internationally recognized certification. We have enjoyed hosting the High Scorers Concerts which have proven to be treats for the soul and supported ABRSM in the conduct of its examinations. There is a synergy in our aims – both ABRSM and The British School are committed to nurturing generations of young musicians and promote the development of their creativity, international mindedness and a deep sense of global citizenship. We look forward to a long, sustained and rewarding partnership with ABRSM to nurture the creative talent of generations of young music lovers both within our school and the wider community. Best wishes for a stronger and ongoing collaboration. VANITA UPPAL OBE Director The British School, New Delhi MESSAGE The ABRSM High Scorers’ concert provides students the thrilling opportunity to showcase their musical talent before adoring parents, teachers and music lovers, giving the performing students their moment of glory before a hall-full of music aficionados who hang on their every note. Selection into the concert is just reward for a long period of commitment to an instrument, and it celebrates achievement. Music players are very special people. In the current fast-paced world of immediate gratification where attention spans have shortened, musicians choose to learn a skill that requires patient practice, focus and persistence, qualities that mark them out for later success. But music players also have more fun than others because they are more gregarious: music-making is usually a very social rather than a solitary activity. The ABRSM concert also draws together the community of music lovers in the city and surrounding areas. I hope that, as time goes by, all the various local music groups will come together to form various ensembles such as a Lucknow Schools Orchestra, a Lucknow Schools Choir, a Lucknow chamber music group, etc. to multiply the good clean fun, do inter-city tours, to take music making to the next level, and to harness all the benefits of music for our young people. GEETA GANDHI KINGDON President City Montessori School, Lucknow MESSAGE Today, as I write this, I feel hopeful. I feel strength. I see the promise that in the midst of pain and distrust and anger- in this world of chaos today- there can be peace. Before me I see young minds finding beauty in these dark times, girls and boys whose voices, whose instruments, whose music, shall remind the world of the beauty that still remains. And it shall bring back faith in goodness and joy and inspire us to hope for a better world- one that is filled with possibilities. As Victor Hugo said, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” I sincerely congratulate and commend ABRSM for giving children an opportunity to explore and push the limits of their talent. The encouragement that you provide them with through events such as these goes a long way in consolidating their dedication to achieving perfection. Yet again, I might add that the challenge you place before them in testing their skills at an international level is an important reminder that perfection is a myth created by those that are too afraid to explore beyond it.

  • Biodiversity for Everyone's Life
Biodiversity for Everyone’s Life Jointly organized by Miranda House, University of Delhi and Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Manipur Date: 31August 2018 Time: 9.00 am to 06.00 pm Venue: Auditorium, Miranda House, University of Delhi Preamble This Conclave aims to explore Biodiversity from a multifaceted perspective, from scientific understanding to its conservation and expansion. It will pose two important questions: How do we make biodiversity an inseparable part of day-to-day life? How do we make biodiversity an integral part of every citizen’s conscious self? India is proud to have some of the major hotspots of biodiversity in the world, particularly the N- E states in India. Its health is important for sustainable development of the entire country. It also throws challenges as to how to keep the aspirations of the people of N-E fulfilled and at the same time, maintain and expand the biodiversity. Similar problems/issues affect other biodiversity hotspots in the country. With increased human migration, exchange of living and non-living commodities across the globe, introduction of invasive species, new epidemic outbreaks, and more importantly the local and the global impact of climate change, we need to re-examine the dynamics of Earth's ecosystem from a newer perspective. An understanding of the Earth’s ecosystems and measures to sustain the health of the Earth for the future requires multi-disciplinary approaches. With the help of tools of big data analysis, foundations of planetary science and ecology and evolution, we may start identifying key factors that affect biodiversity and, thereby, ecosystem function and services.
