Maintenance of Block / District level information are assuming importance in the context of planning. An encouraging shift is being made through the introduction of Block level planning to decentralize the planning process. It is to be made obligatory that all the Government agencies operating at Block / District level should spare a copy of the periodical reports to the Block / District Statistical Unit . The demand of water is increasing day by day. So, groundwater resources play a vital role for additional demand by farmers and Industries and domestic usage leads to rapid development of groundwater. About 63% of available groundwater resources are now being used. However, the development is not uniform all over the State, and in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, intensive groundwater development had led to declining water levels, increasing trend of Over Exploited and Critical Firkas, saline water intrusion, etc. ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP Ariyalur district located in the Central eastern part of Tamil Nadu lies between North Latitudes 10⁰52’30”-11⁰25’20”and East Longitudes 78⁰57’00”- 79⁰31’00”. Ariyalur district with Headquarter at Ariyalur consists of two Revenue Divisions of Ariyalur and Udayarpalayam three Taluks of Ariyalur, Sendurai and Udayarpalayam.The district is further divided into six development blocks viz., Andimadam, Ariyalur, Jayankondan, Sendurai, T.Palur and Thirumanur for administrative reasons.

SRI BRAHADEESWARAR TEMPLE, GANGAIKONDACHOLAPURAM The Brahadeeswarar temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur District was built by Rajendra Chola-I in the 11 th century. The striking feature of the temple is its Vimanam. This temple has a 100 sq ft base with a height of 170 feet by 20 feet perpendicular. There are beautiful plaster figures on the Vimanam. The entire structure is an imposing one and the Vimanam is visible even at a distance of 10 kms. Sri Brahadeswarar, the presiding deity, is represented by 13 feet high in the form of Lingam with a circumference of 16-1/2 feet. It is made out of a single block of stone.
