I’m sure that most of you will have seen or heard about the Helter Skelter which has been in the cathedral for the last ten days. Opinions have been mixed with some expressing the view that such a “gimmick” is inappropriate in an ancient place of worship like the cathedral and does little to help spread the good news of the gospel. Today a small group of us climbed the steep steps to the top of the Helter Skelter and came down much more quickly than we went up! It was fun and I would not have missed it and have my badge to prove I did it! It also gave us a close up view of the great West window and some idea of the many roof bosses which run the length of the nave but are seldom seen by most of us. But the Helter Skelter was only a small part of the whole experience. It was a joy to see so many young families and people of all ages enjoying the opportunity to explore the cathedral in a relaxed way. They were not only there for the Helter Skelter. Other activities included a Bible Box. This was a large box capable of holding at least half a dozen adults, in which the walls and ceiling were papered with the books of the bible, which many people took time to read. On the outside of the box there were some astonishing facts about the bible which couldn’t fail to arouse interest and a list of well known sayings in the English language which although part of everyday speech, originate in the Bible. There was a labyrinth where people were invited to walk the way quietly and reflect on their own personal journey of faith. In another corner of the cathedral people from several walks of life shared their experience of seeing things differently as they read the gospels and came to know Jesus and his teaching in a way which transformed their view of the world. It proved to be an unexpectedly spiritual experience to be in the cathedral today. It certainly didn’t feel like a “gimmick” and I was constantly reminded that Jesus came to give us life in all it’s fullness. He enjoyed being with people, sharing a picnic, cooking breakfast for his friends on the beach, and loved every aspect of creation. He walked the dusty roads of Palestine and made places holy by his presence. I have no doubt that he was present in the cathedral today making it holy with his presence. To those who found the Helter Skelter inappropriate (I wonder if they had actually been there?) I leave the last word to Julian of Norwich: ” It is God’s will that we seek Him wilfully and busily...... gladly and merrily.” Revd. Doreen 3 CHURCH NOTICES

7 SHIPDHAM TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Dates for the diary: new members welcome. 1. Garden Party Sat 14th Sept, 2-4pm at Rectory Cottage, Church Lane IP25 7JY. This is our informal DIY bring some sharing food/drink/plate/eating irons/chair for a chinwag, game of boules/palet (another French game - you’ll have to be there to find out more). It gives us a chance to talk about the last visit and what we plan for the French coming here next May and for anyone who wants to find out about Twinning. A good way to start is to host as you are on ‘home territory’: STA covers all the guest’s costs of travel and the ‘soiree’ event at Hall from our fundraising. We are a friendly bunch and welcome new individuals/pairs/families. 2. Sat 12th Oct, WI Hall 7pm, French Film Evening (with subtitles…) and AGM. This year the film is “Aurore”, a gentle comedy. 3. Sat 11th Jan 2020 Post-Xmas Dinner at the White Hart in Hingham. 4. Sat 8th February, our popular Wine Tasting in Thomas Bullock School hall. Yep, they’re a bit more expensive than supermarket plonk but you get to taste 12 wines, don’t have to buy and there’s a generous discount if you do. It’s also great for people-watching those who think they know the difference between wine and whine, dahling. A great evening’s entertainment for all, not just twinners. Tickets available in October, £14 for food and wine. 5. The French are coming here Thursday 21 May 2020 and leave early Sunday 24 May. Plans are well under way for a jolly time. This service is also the Methodist Section Service and sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee will be served after the service. Everyone is welcome. Please come and join us for our final service. 8 In recent months the group has been involved in two events. The first was Shipdham School Fete organised by FOSSE. We were pleased to be asked and happy to attend, raising funds for the school and charity as part of the local community. Unfortunately the weather was not kind, a lot of work goes into organising such an event but everyone made the best of it. The second event was at the Dereham Hub Open Day for the Day Centre run by Independence Matters in Rash’s Green. We met some lovely people and raised £50 which we will be donating to this organisation for the centre. If anyone has any spare wool in whatever quantity we would be grateful for it to be donated to help us to continue knitting for all the good causes and charities we support.

Meeting dates for September are: Tuesday 3rd, 1:00pm to 3:00pm WI Hall Wednesday 11th, 1:00pm to 3:00pm All Saints Church. For more information please contact Kathy on 820615, Marlene 820327 or Sue Hart 822536

Shipdham branch of Royal British Legion is hosting a 1940’s Evening With Fancy Dress (optional), Cheese, Wine & Burger 21st September at the Golden Dog to commemorate 100 years since end WW1 & 75years since Battle of Britain. Starts at 630pm with Live 1940’s music singer. £5 per head pay at the door.

9 Our local … THE GOLDEN DOG - SHIPDHAM - Welcome to a new feature for the Shipdham News Our local… focussing on our local businesses. We’re starting with the Golden Dog pub on High Street and welcome other local businesses to contact us for a feature article here.

Dave Ridgewell and Paula Reidy have run The Golden Dog since 2014. It’s a freehold serving traditional ales and meals. Dave sees the pub as a central community hub, he offers local groups a free meeting space, welcomes several local associations such as the Royal British Legion, the Norton Bike Club and the Classic Car club for their monthly meetings, and hosts clubs like the Shipdham Bowls Club for their annual dinners. Paula and Dave are keen to offer local residents all the benefits of a traditional village pub. They frequently put on live music, karaoke and are a popular venue for christening parties, weddings and wakes.

The Golden Dog has its origins as a house built in the sixteenth century, and was converted to a public house in the 1850s. Dave and Paula have transformed the inside of the pub which still has the traditional saloon bar alongside a comfortable family bar, restaurant, beer garden, children’s play area, marquee and of course the all-important car park. In a village which used to have 20 or more beer houses and pubs, the Golden Dog now stands for all that a good village pub offers to local residents - good company, good ale and food, and good times.

11 SHIPDHAM HISTORY GROUP

We are all very grateful to Steve Price and his brilliant singing group ‘Pot of Gold’, the talented Shanty Singers who performed for us last month. The church was a lovely setting for an enjoyable and enthusiastic fun-filled evening of songs of the sea. Our thanks also go to everyone who came along in support, donated the many raffle prizes, and to Kathy Newton and friends for their delicious cakes and pastries which were enjoyed by all. We planned for the amount raised to be used to finish off the fund needed for the superb World War I church window. The amazing sum of £504.00 profit which exceeded all our expectations was raised on the evening and the balance will be given to All Saints. Our next project is to raise funds to purchase a new digital projector so that we may be able to give more shows of old local photographs and to present different aspects of Shipdham history. Please have a look at our Facebook page ‘Shipdham History Group’ which interacts with almost 800 people interested in the history of the village, from those living next door to far corners of the world. Beanie Brown (820068), Sue Dewing (820324) & Marlene Secker (820327)

SHIPDHAM COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PLAN

Shipdham Community Emergency Plan (SCEP) Hello residents of Shipdham. A few years ago, an Emergency Plan was issued to the residents to try and help people prepare for a situation of some sort occurring in the village which leads to a sustained disruption or possible evacuation scenario. We have reviewed this and re-issued it with up to date phone numbers including a Telephone number direct to the coordinator. Just last month we saw residents in Derbyshire evacuated from their homes for several days whilst a reservoir wall was showing signs of collapse. This showed the importance of them having a plan already in place, which took into account specific potential danger areas for their particular community. Please read the leaflet and think about how you and your family would cope. Having a plan will make any disruption to our normal way of life easier to cope with. Thank you SCEP Team 12 CHARITY QUIZ

Our Charity Quizzes continue to raise generous amounts of money for local charities, from our loyal quizzers. The charities we have supported so far this year have been Nelsons Journey,Cystic Fibrosis, Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS), The Matthew Project, The Shipdham Window (WW1 Memorial Window in Shipdham Church), Mid Norfolk Mencap and The Benjamin Foundation. Our total raised so far this year is £1,068. We are currently having a summer break, but will be back in September. If you have a charity that you would like us to raise money for, why don’t you get a team together and join us for the evening? Our policy is to keep it local to our county. We would love to welcome new quizzers and you will find it a relaxed and fun evening. Future ideas have been to have teas and coffees at the end of the quizzes to allow our members to get to know each other better. If you would like to book a table with a team of no more than 6 people, please get in touch with me.We are continuing the format when members from different teams provide the questions, which leads to a diverse range of questions and makes it much more enjoyable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal quizzers for raffle prizes, preparing questions and your brilliant company. The date of our next quiz is September 27th at 7.30pm at The WI Hall and the charity will be Marie Curie Nurses. Heather Crowdy 820078

13 SHIPDHAM GARDEN & HORTICULTURAL CLUB

On the 30th of June the club had a visit to “Dale Farm”, Sandy lane, Dereham. We were welcomed by Graham & Sally Watts who live at Dale Farm which is part of the National Garden Scheme. Dale Farm has much to offer, including a 2-acre plant lovers’ garden with a large spring-fed pond. It has over 1000 plant varieties in exuberantly planted borders with interesting sculptures and features, as well as gravel, vegetable, nature and waterside gardens. There is also a collection of 130 hydrangeas! The members spent time walking around the lovely garden with surprises around every corner. This was followed by home made Tea & Cake! We also enjoyed buying some plants, which Sally grows herself.

On the 6th July the club had a visit to a private garden in Westfield, Dereham. Penny opened her garden to the club, and laid an amazing afternoon tea on for the members - all home made and this was enjoyed by all. The house is a converted Barn and the tea was set out in a garden room on a converted snooker table. The weather was a bit wet but everyone braved the elements to look around the garden. This was also a fund raising event for the Brain Trauma Trust, and £100 was collected for the charity.

Up coming Events 5th September “Bee Friendly Gardening”- Talk by Dr Judy Webb. 3rd October “Annual General Meeting”- A summary of the last year and future plans. 7th November “House Plants”- Talk by Robin McDonald. 5th December “Festive Quiz and Nibbles” Gardening Tip of the Month: To stop mosquitoes and other insect larvae from breeding in birdbaths or rainwater barrels, put a few drops of vegetable oil on top of the water. It spreads to form a film over the surface of the water so the larvae cannot lay eggs, but won’t bother the birds!

Coach to Norwich The Wednesday coach to Norwich leaves the King’s Café at 9.10am and picks up at The Green at 9.15am. It leaves Norwich at 1.05pm, arriving back in Shipdham at approx 2.15pm.

14 SHIPDHAM WIVES

The speaker on 18th July was Tami Evans from Wiltshire Farm Foods complete with delicious samples. The company began in a small way literally with a farmer’s wife, helped by her husband in a Wiltshire farmhouse kitchen with meals delivered by the local postman. We were told how menus are created with attention to nutrition, special diets and even to texture with soft foods for those having difficulty with swallowing. Drivers can take food in and place it in the freezer where required. Most can be cooked straight from the freezer with 60% recyclable packaging. The chefs constantly experiment with new recipes and flavours. The company has won two Queen’s Awards for enterprise including specialist nutrition and is internationally recognised. We found this a very interesting and informative talk with far more to Wiltshire Farm Foods than we had originally thought. We welcomed a new member, Julie Woods we hope that she enjoys our company and speakers. Tea and coffee were provided by Kathy Newton and Pat Fairbairn. There were apologies for absence from Pat Callister and Pat Jarrett. The raffle was won by Anne Payne, Wendy Doel, Jane Harris, Julie Woods and Kath Williams. Members are reminded that part of the 19th September meeting will be our AGM. Subscriptions will be due, still £10 for the year. Before the AGM business our speaker will be Trish McArthy who will talk about her 157 mile trek across Norway and how she trained for this. Sue Hart

26 SCHOOLBAG BLESSINGS If September brings some kind of new beginning for your family, such as a child starting nursery, school or moving up a class, it can be helpful to know that God is always with us wherever we go. The start of a new term is an opportunity to ask for God’s blessing on the places we will go and the people we will meet. Here’s a simple way to do this: • Look in your child’s school bag. Often there is a name tag built in. You can usually take the paper slip out of the tag. • Write on the back of the paper slip a simple prayer for your child, for example, ‘Dear God, please bless (child’s name) at (nursery/school) this year’, or similar words. • Replace the card in its holder, and nobody will know the prayer is there except you, your child and God. • If the bag doesn’t already have a tag, you can use a keyring (one of those with a plastic frame and a paper insert) and attach it to the zip. Parents: if you take a bag or briefcase to work (or even if you just have a handbag or sports bag) why not make yourself a blessing label too?

Make a memory If your child recently had a first day at school or nursery or playgroup, keep the photo of them that day as a reminder, and of how special the moment is. You could take one at the same time each year, and create an album - pick a background that won’t change, so you can see how they’ve grown!

27 SHIPDHAM & DISTRICT BOOK GROUP

In July the group discussed Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, first in the series by JKRowling. Many had read it with younger members of their families or for their own enjoyment. Most had seen the film. This was a very popular choice and much enjoyed by members, including the minority who had doubts about reading a book intended for children. We appreciated the imagination of the author and understood her success. On a more serious note it was felt that the loneliness of many children who come from abandoned or broken families was depicted without spoiling the story and fun. One member has adult children who play a form of Quidditch NB with out flying broomsticks. In August we discussed Pompeii by Robert Harris. It begins with the pre disaster setting at the height of the Roman Empire. Along the Mediterranean coast, the richest citizens are relaxing in their luxurious villas, enjoying the last days of summer. The world’s largest navy is peacefully at anchor in Misenum. The carefree lifestyle and gorgeous weather belie an impending cataclysm, and only one man is worried. The young engineer Marcus Attilius Primus has just taken charge of the Aqua Augusta, the enormous aqueduct that brings fresh water to a quarter of a million people in nine towns around the Bay of Naples. His predecessor has disappeared. Springs are failing for the first time in generations. Now there is a crisis on the Augusta’s sixty-mile main line, somewhere to the north of Pompeii, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.Attilius, decent, practical, and incorruptible, promises Pliny, the famous scholar who commands the navy, that he can repair the aqueduct before the reservoir runs dry. His plan is to travel to Pompeii and put together an expedition, then head out to the place where he believes the fault lies. Pompeii proves to be a corrupt and violent town, and Attilius soon discovers that there are powerful forces at work, natural and man-made,threatening to destroy him. Several members have visited modern Pompeii and Herculaneum which added to their enjoyment of the book and visualisation of the setting with Vesuvius brooding over them, despite it’s being smaller than at the time of the disaster, another had read the book before her visit and found herself comparing chapters from Harris’s book rather than listening to the guide. All found it a fascinating read and liked the combination of historical fact with fiction with the latter combining murder and love. All agreed that they learnt much about the Romans including the fact that they not only used cement but found how to make a waterproof version; were appalled by the brutal treatment of the slaves which including thrrowing them to sea creatures which would devour them alive; corruption, hedonism and horror went side by side in their civilisation despite their advance in practical knowledge, much as today when we like to consider opurselves civilised and much more. Several said that they had a problem with the characterisation, possibly because of the Roman names combined with the large number of characters. It was agreed that Harris is an excellent writer helped by his accurate and detailed research. For our September meeting we are reading ‘This is Going to Hurt’ by Adam Kay. 28 29 Notes from the Chairman’s diary I thought as I am Chairman of the Council this year, you might like to hear a bit more about the role and what it involves. The Chairman (no gender issues, the title is The Chairman!) is elected for one year from May to April, and fulfils a civic, not political, role rather like a Mayor. Chairing the full council meeting is a key task, with a lot of reading, briefings and ready support from officers including lawyers on the day. Although the agenda is published, there are opportunities for elected members to raise issues without notice, and the meetings can take twists and turns - so the chairman has to steer council through these, always applying standing orders, policies, the constitution and points of law, with fairness and impartiality. A key role for the Chairman and her deputy, is to attend a vast range of civic and community events, across the county and beyond, ranging from coffee with a 96 year old veteran at home, to age old traditional civic ceremonies, such as the installation of the new Lord Mayor of Norwich, and the High Sheriff, the new Mayors of boroughs and towns, the Justice service at Norwich Cathedral where all the judiciary process in full court dress, to the President’s Day in where young people with a range of special needs come together with sporting icons to try out new sports and have fun. Other events so far have included funerals, armed forces events, coffee mornings, seminars, a visit to HMP Wayland, farewells to Rev Sally Theakston and the retiring manager of the Iceni partnership in Swaffham, greeting visitors etc. etc. To date my most memorable event was my own Civic Reception held in All Saints Church Shipdham, conducted by Rev. Gill Wells, and involving family, friends and the community. This simple but evocative service saw elected members and officers, as well as myself, pledge to serve all the residents of Breckland. The Chairman also is regularly briefed on the protocol for national non-political issues, such as the death of a member of the Royal family. The role is never ending, but exciting, meeting people, and going places never imagined! It is important to remember that beside being the Chairman, I also have my ward work and committee meetings to attend: ward work will always take priority for Shipdham with Scarning. So there’s a taste of life with a chain round one’s neck, lots of sausage rolls to eat, and lots to remember, with hardly a day off, but fun to be had! 30 BRADENHAM & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

August 15th saw a first for us: an Open Garden Safari. Members of our club, residents of Bradenham and also members from Shipdham and Ashill Garden Societies were invited to visit 9 gardens owned by members. The weather finally smiled on the steady stream of visitors; balloons, bunting and gardening tips were freely shared; tea and cakes were provided; a model steam train ran in one garden and the whole day was topped off by a fantastic barbeque. Thanks to all garden owners and visitors who made this a great success. And no-one was rude about my weeds…
