welcome Tracey and ESF ’s CEO Belinda Greer

trust you’ve all enjoyed a fabulous holiday season. I’ve said it here before, but it’s always true: I just love that the festive season in our home starts with American Thanksgiving I in late-November and continues all the way through Chinese New Year. As we settle back into post-holiday life, it’s the perfect time to be talking about work-life balance – the theme of this issue. While there doesn’t seem to be any one correct answer for achieving it, there are certainly strategies each one of us can employ to ensure we’re getting the most enjoyment and fulfilment out of our days. For me, that means writing this letter to you from sunny Southern California, just down the road from my parents. We have loved living in Asia for more than a decade, but that doesn’t mean it’s without struggle. As I’m sure is the case for many of you, I’m conflicted between maximising every amazing and unusual opportunity the expat life affords us with spending time with my family in the US. So, for us, we’ve found a balance by renting a home near them for a month, where we work remotely while “playing house”. So far, so good. One woman who has managed the work-life balance gracefully is the new CEO of ESF, Belinda Greer. Belinda, who moved here from Scotland six months ago for this huge and important role, has five grown sons and a recently retired husband. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to learn all about her vision for ESF and how she managed to move up the career ladder while raising well-adjusted children. I hope you’ll enjoy meeting her as much as I did. We’ve got lots of other stories inside, too. Have you been kicking around the idea of starting a business? Read on for tips from others who have gone before you. Have you ever thought about going back to school? Inside, meet several parents who are doing just that. I do hope that the folks you’ll meet inside inspire you to kick-start your goals. Perhaps this will be the year we all find some balance between our obligations and our aspirations.

Thanks for reading,

Tracey Starr, Editor-in-Chief

alking quietly into my first class in more than a decade, I was giddy with excitement, until WI sunk in my seat – a difficult move with my eight-month pregnant belly in the way. I might have been quiet, but I was anything but inconspicuous. Seven months earlier, I boarded an emotional rollercoaster when news of my pregnancy arrived just days after enrolling in a full-time master’s course at the University of Hong Kong. Torn between the joy of another child and the thought of postponing my studies, yet again, I doubted there would ever be a right time to go back to school. As weeks went by and the initial shock subsided, I began to question why one event had to preclude the other. Just as there is no right time to be a parent, there is hardly ever a right time to be a student when you have children. Oprah Winfrey’s words, “You can have it all. Just not all at once,” rang in my head, but surely the woman could sometimes be wrong? I finally decided to do both, and the more people told me I was crazy, the more I knew I was doing the right thing. My husband was on board, and I discussed the situation with the programme’s director. Both said it would be challenging, but were supportive. That’s all I needed to hear.

Many women find the idea of going back to school daunting, especially if they have been completely ensconced in family life. For some, a simple nudge to get started is the best form of support. “My husband helped me complete my application and told me what a good idea he thought it was,” says Christine O’Donnell, who is expecting her second child while getting a master’s degree in Education Administration and Management at the University of Hong Kong. As my school semester got into full swing and “deadline” became my word du jour, I sometimes doubted the sanity of what I was doing (our first child was only 16 months old when my classes began). In those moments, I kept reminding myself I was neither the first nor the last student with family obligations. In fact, I am part of a growing trend. In addition to seeing a fair number of businesses start up and shut down during her eight years in this market, Jo’s husband also runs a successful start-up. Her advice? “First, ask yourself why you are starting a business. Is it to keep yourself occupied and bring in some holiday money whilst still being able to be there when your children need you? That is a very different proposition from starting and running a sustainable business to provide for your family. The basic premise, however, in both cases is the same: you need a business plan that stands up to scrutiny and shows how the business will succeed.” Kirsten adds, “What’s your point of difference? 66 Playtimes February 2014 67 he Mid-Levels home of Australian expatriates Tamara and Andrew Toon and their two boys, Coby, aged seven, and Ayden, aged four, is bright and cheery, the T central living space making it feel lit from within. Floor-to-ceiling windows send light everywhere, calming everyone, Tamara says. “We’re fortunate to have a great view of the harbour and, as both my husband and I grew up living near the ocean – he sailed before he could walk – it was really important to us to be able to see the water. We feel claustrophobic if we can’t.” The living room is their most-loved area in the home. Airy and white with minimalist furniture and objects, the room is a design lesson in uncluttered, yet relaxed, neutrality. “Our house in Australia is near the beach, with white walls and floors, and has that real beach-house feel and that’s what I tried to capture here,” Tamara says. She and her husband sometimes feel that they might have the only beach house in Hong Kong. A neutral palette with natural wood plays a large part in providing this holiday-at-home backdrop. “We had the dining room table custom-made based on one I’d seen in an interiors magazine. I love the plank look as it keeps to our beach-house theme,” she says. And though the couple are very much driven by the lack of artifice in the coastal vibe, modernity and antiques are interesting to them, too. An Eames lounge chair sits in the living area and eight Barcelona chairs cast an air of sophisticated precision around the dining table. “I also love my stunning antique silver-plated tray, and fiddle-back soup ladle and serving spoon, originally from London but sourced here from a great new fine antiques store called Authentiques in Sheung Wan,” Tamara says.

Artwork found in the Defan art village in China shows this family are serious travellers. The beautiful bed in the master bedroom was discovered in Indonesia; the children’s bedrooms benefit, too, from the artwork from their journeys. Both rooms are balanced with limited toys and books, and it is the striking boldness of the features on the canvas works, one of a dragon attacking Hong Kong and the other a spaceship construction, that speaks volumes about the couple’s love of art. “These were originally hand-drawn by my talented friend Karyn Moffet of MKU designs in Soho,” Tamara explains. A lover of interiors magazines, Tamara searches for the unexpected and loves planning and plotting for the apartment. She finds Pinterest a wonderful guide, particularly the home décor section, and she says she can be found pinning away until late into the night. For special pieces she heads to Shambala, Tequila Kola and Indigo Living in Hong Kong. The Toons are enjoying living in Hong Kong; they love the international lifestyle, and thrive on their close proximity to the urban heart of things. Tamara explains the role she sees Hong Kong playing in her children’s lives: It is a place that has opened up a lifetime of opportunities for them, she says. “I truly think living here will give them [the children] such an open-minded and worldly outlook on life when they’re older.”
