Virudhunagar Hindu Nadars’ Senthikumara Nadar College (Autonomous) continues its journey of academic excellence in imparting holistic education by responding to both academic and administrative challenges. The institution has already presented itself before NAAC for accreditation in 2001, 2007 and 2013. This year it offered itself once again to this yaga of quality check. Subsequently, NAAC Peer Team comprising Dr. Ramachandram Sirandas, Vice Chancellor, Osmania University, Hyderabad as Chairperson, Dr. Jagadishkumar Patnaik, Dean, Dept. of Political Science Mizoram University, Mizoram as Member Co-ordinator, Dr. Lily Nirmal David, Principal, St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (Autonomous), Bangalore and Dr. Prathiba Singh, Deputy Adviser NAAC, New Delhi as Members visited the college on the 07th and 08th of January, 2019. After assessing the continuous improvement of the college in the last five years based on the seven criteria, the NAAC was pleased to grant ‘A’ grade to the institution with the CGPA of 3.01. I. CURRICULAR ASPECTS An effective curriculum is the means to achieve the aims of education. Therefore, the importance and the impact of curricular aspect in any educational institution cannot be overstated. Developing an appropriate and need based curricula to suit the professional and personal needs of the students is the primary task of higher education. The institution makes sincere efforts to cater and fulfill the needs of the society by contributing in its own way to the enrichment of the curriculum. A well-planned and well-executed curriculum contributes towards the achievement of educational aims and development of desirable behavior patterns. The curriculum does not confine the teachers and the taught to mere completion of prescribed syllabus. It is not limited to theoretical aspects alone, but it should also be practical and pragmatic to the real life.

On the basis of the feedback given by the stakeholders, major revision of syllabus was done for the second year UG and PG programmes. The departments were advised to introduce subjects relevant to the present context and to meet the global needs.

II. TEACHING, LEARNING, AND EVALUATION The teaching and the non-teaching faculties are the backbone of the institution. Teachers of our institution do not simply deliver lectures on lessons but also they carve out the niche for themselves and continue to inspire and motivate the young minds. The primary aim of the college is to encourage students to develop a spirit of independent thinking and intensive and extensive reading and learning. The dedicated team of teachers continuously suggests and makes students read books and to be sound in what they learn. The knowledge they acquire in their respective subjects is to attain and scale new heights in their academic endeavors and achieve special grades in their academic life.

1. Staff strength The total faculty strength of our institution during the academic year 2018-2019 was 199, which includes 120 Government Aided and 79 self-financing faculties. Among 199 staff members, 103 Aided staff and 23 Self Finance staff are with Ph.D.

2. Ph.D. Awardees Even though the sacred duty of the college is to preserve the knowledge already acquired in the past, it exists chiefly to extend the boundaries of knowledge. Research work in every branch of learning is the sine qua non of a college. Our professors constantly engage themselves in research works and contribute something new and valuable to the society. Teachers in orientation / refresher courses According to the norms of the UGC, faculties who have joined recently should undergo training in Academic Staff Colleges run by various Universities throughout India. In this academic year five teachers attended orientation programme to hone their skill of teaching and seventeen teachers attended refresher courses to update their knowledge in their chosen subjects. 5. Entry level test An entry-level test was organized by the IQAC on 04th July 2018 to all the new entrants of Under Graduate courses to assess their competency level in the prime areas of study such as English, General Knowledge and in their Major subject. The performance of the students in the test helped the teachers to identify the slow learners and fast learners. The evaluation report was then forwarded to the respective departments for further follow-up actions. 12. Feedback by Students Feedback on the staff was collected from all the students. Students gave their feedback on the teachers through computers. Feedback by staff members about Head of the Department and Principal was also collected. Reports were prepared using special software and remedial actions were carried out on the basis of the reports prepared. Such evaluation of staff, it is hoped, will definitely enhance the quality of teaching. Feedback on the Curriculum and Campus were also collected from the

III. RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY, AND EXTENSION All the wonderful advancement in technology, are the fruits of scientific research. Researchers enjoy a privileged status in society. Our management provides basic amenities for the researchers to carry out their work with complete freedom and independence. The well-equipped research laboratories are functioning round the clock for the benefit of the scholars and others who pursue research. They can also avail DELNET facility available in the library. Teachers are encouraged to send proposals to various funding agencies like UGC, DST, TNSCST etc., for major / minor research projects, seminars, conferences, workshops and training programme. As a result, the college received a total grant of ` 35,63,990/- from various funding agencies in the academic year 2018-2019. MoU Signed 1) Our college has signed an MoU with the Institute of Integrated Regenerative Medicine, Malaysia. 2) The Department of Management Studies has signed an MoU with the SEGA PLASCAN EXPORTS, Virudhunagar. Two MoUs signed by our college with reputed research and service organizations speak in volume the subject expertise available in our campus. College Sadhana Under the guidance of our Managing Board, the research committee of our college successfully launched a bi-annual multidisciplinary research journal “College Sadhana” in August 2008 with International Standard Serial Number ISSN 0974 – 6838 issued by the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources, New Delhi. Dr. N. Raman and Dr. A.A. Magesan, the Editors-in-chief and Dr.N.Prithivikumaran, the Managing Editor are shouldering the responsibilityof bringing out the journal regularly. The website of this multi-disciplinary journal is regularly updated to enable the authors of research articles to submit their articles online.

Extension Activities Constructive work is the need of the hour. Our college, which is considered as one of the best institutions in southern districts of Tamil Nadu, trains our students, in social activities through several students’ forums like NSS, NCC, YRC & RRC and inculcates good qualities in them and help them to become responsible citizens. The students develop friendship and brotherhood and learn to do service to the institution in particular and community at large. Blood donation camps organized by the college offer timely help to patients and save precious life of those who need blood during emergency. 1. YRC, NCC, NSS, and OBA of our college organized Blood donation camps at regular intervals. Six camps were conducted during the academic year 2018-2019 in collaboration with V.Dhanasamy Parimala Devi Medical Trust Blood Bank, Virudhunagar, and 690 units of blood were collected from the students.

This year our students donated life saving blood to 120 patients in response to emergency calls. 2. The College conducted the 14th Science Talent Exam for the Plus 2 Students of on 23.12.2018. The Examination was conducted at various centers of Virudhunagar district with the concurrence of the District Educational Officer. The primary aim of conducting the examination was to build confidence among the +2 students who appear for Government Public Examinations. As many as 2312 students from various schools of the district were benefited by this examination. Prizes were given to rank holders in the function organized on 30.01.2019. 3. The NSS Girls units organized an Entrepreneurship Development Programme for Rural Women at Periyavallikulam Village on 22.09.2018. Training on "Purse & Jute Making" was imparted to them. To provide the school students with practical exposure in the Object Oriented Programming Language C++, Department of Information Technology organized CPP workshop for Government School Students from 31.10.2018 to 09.11.2018. 190 students from six different schools in Virudhunagar District took part in this workshop. 9. The NSS units of our college, Caring Nature and Rotary Club of Virudhunagar Elite planted 250 Saplings in Chinnamoopanpantti on 15.12.2018. 10. Our college NSS girls units organized Environmental Awareness Cycle Rally (Virudhunagar – Maasaniamman Kovil – Virudhunagar) on 09.02.2019. 31 girls students of our college participated in this rally. 14. The students of the Department of Computer Science organized a Children Fest on 16.02.2019 for the children of Blossom Trust and KMM Trust. Motivational speech was given by Dr. T. Kathirvalavakumar, Head of the Department of Computer Science. Quiz competition, Culturals and Games were organized by the students of Computer Science. Winners were given prizes. Children were given practice on computers to do drawings. Pencil box with pen, pencil, scale and eraser were given to each child. Delicious lunch with ice cream was given to the children of KMM Trust were given to the Children of Blossom Trust. 3 ceiling fans, pillows and bedsheets were donated to the children of Blossom Trust. Totally 43 children of these trusts were benefitted by this event. 15. A special one-day camp was organized by Old Girls Association on 24.01.2019 at Old Age Home run by Virudhunagar Unja Dhanasamy Parimaladevi Charity Trust. 16. The Department of Microbiology organized a Master Health Checkup Camp for teaching and nonteaching staff members of our college and also for the public with the association of Apollo Hospital, Madurai on 26.02.2019. 17. IV. INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES

The college has a well-equipped, fully automated library with the state-of-the art facilities. The college library serves the educational and research needs of the students and staff of the college. There are more than 1,05,602 books and 170 periodicals on various subjects. In this academic year 2018-19, nearly 1759 books are added to the collection. The Library is fully automated with Library Management Software and lending facility is equipped with barcode technology. Our Library is a member of DELNET (Developing Library Network). As a member, the library is entitled to receive books and journal article, e-journal articles, CDs etc. which are available in libraries all over India through inter library loan for a period of time. The library is also member of American Information Resource Centre, Chennai. Hence, the library is provided with five AIRC library cards. The library shall lend 4 books, 2 periodicals and one CD by using one library card. The members shall select books for lending from online catalogue which is available in American Consulate, Chennai website and the books shall be sent by AIRC through courier. The library has got the membership of Inflibnet (Shodhsindhu) which covers more than 5000 on-line journals and 10280 e-books. Individual passwords are given to students and staff members to access the e-resources. Library Cards Two cards are given to each UG student and three cards to every PG student and M.Phil. scholars. Students are allowed to keep library books for 10 days. The staff members and research scholars are allowed to keep 15 books for a period of one month. All the students and staff are members of the library. They are provided with ID cards with barcode which ensure easy accessibility and book issue procedure.

In the programme, the students are guided on how to use the library and meet their information needs. Audio Library To cater to the needs of the visually challenged students, our library has a collection of 65 audio CDs. The audio collection includes CDs on developing self confidence and preparing for competitive examinations. They are made available to the students at any time. 32 Braille Books on various subjects are also made available in the library for the use of the visually impaired students. Two 2TB external hard disks were purchased in this year to store 1200 audio books. Ready Reference Desk This service offers the collection of Newspapers’ Special columns like Know your English, Science & Technology news and Employment opportunities etc., both in hard copy and soft copy formats for knowledge updation. Anti-Plagiarism Checker Anti Plagiarism Tool URKUND is installed in our General Library to check the thesis, articles, dissertation against the e-resources, published e-books and thesis or other documents which are submitted earlier in Urkund database. The faculty members and Scholars who are involved in research and paper publication shall submit their documents for checking plagiarism. E-Gate The introduction of barcode scanner is quite essential for circulation job of library and in monitoring the entry and exit of the library users. It also speeds up the lending section of the library. This barcode scanner aids the library users in making quick entry of their details at the entrance section. And it also helps the library to keep user entry records. This system has replaced the manual user entry - register method used so far. Book Exhibition Book exhibition is organized in a grand manner every year for the public during the month of October. The Book Exhibition is organized at KVS Middle School, Virudhunagar which is at the centre of the town. Nearly 8 book sellers participated in the programme and it is heartening to note that the book sale and the number of visitors are increasing year by year. Digital Journalism Forum for Digital Journalism was formed in this academic year 2018-2019 and the student editors have published four issues of the e-magazine, “V-Zine”. National Digital Library Club IIT Kharagpur has been conducting many awareness programmes on National Digital Library Club in every college in India for the promotion of the access of e-resources. Accordingly, National Digital Library Club was started in our college on 09.10.2019. 35 faculty members of our College participated in the launching ceremony. As per the MOU signed with Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization, this year we successfully conducted a Certificate course on Disaster Management. Senthi Helping Wings Club (SHWC) Senthi Helping Wings Club is a group consisting of volunteers (M.Phil., and Ph.D., Scholars of the College) who look after the needs of the differently abled students studying in the College. Totally there are 8 differently abled students in the campus and five among them are visually impaired. SHWC organizes reading sessions and scribe services to visually – impaired students. Scribes also create audio books to aid the visually challenged students to prepare well for the examinations. The volunteers also render their services by acting as scribes in the Internal and Summative Examinations. The Club also provides in- class scribe services to students. Dr.P.Sami Dean–Student Services is the Co-ordinator of the club. Dr.T.Shunmugaprabha, Assistant Professor of Microbiology assisted the Co-ordinator in arranging scribes for the examinations.

VI. GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIP Our college is working with a global vision to carry out its multifaceted administrative activities through two important planning bodies - College Managing Board and College Committee. College academic autonomy is governed by the Governing Body and Academic Council. As the realization of standard in education is highly felt, the system is subject to positive changes under the expertise of scholars in board and college committee meetings. They ensure the smooth running of the college. Accolade for Aces Accolade for Aces is a noble gesture on the part of the Management to acknowledge, appreciate and honour the faculty members on their accomplishment in their respective field. Research guides, who pass on their wisdom of knowledge to their scholars by successfully guiding for their doctoral degree, are duly honored by the management. The teachers, who enrich their knowledge by acquiring Ph.D. degrees, are also recognized in the event. The teachers, under the self-funded streams, are given increments in their pay package for getting their Ph.D. / NET / SET qualifications. The teachers, who obtain Major or Minor Research projects from any National and State level funding agencies, are felicitated with valuable mementoes. The teachers, who render fruitful services in outreach programmes from time to time and bring laurels to the institution, are highly appreciated. This includes the teachers in charge of NSS, NCC, YRC, RRC, Women Empowerment Cell, Placement Cell, and Fine Arts Club. The teachers, who are involved in the activities of various committees for the smooth functioning of the college, are applauded for their noble services. All the members of departments, who produce university ranks, are highly appreciated with mementoes. Cash incentives are given to the teachers, who publish their articles in national or international journals. The teachers, who produced 100% results in the

In order to make the staff not to be absent on working days, staff members who do not avail themselves of any kind of leave during the academic year are given financial incentives. The Management institutes the Best Teacher Award every year for recognizing the meritorious teacher in the campus. Dr. R. Selvam, Head and Associate Professor in English, Mr. S. Rajeev Gandhi, Head and Assistant Professor in Mathematics (SF), were honoured with the Best Teacher Award and Mr.P.Pandithurai, Lab Assistant and Mr. K. Kodeeswarapandian, Office Assistant, were honoured with Best Non – Teaching Staff Award for the year 2018 – 2019 by the College Management. The Management spent ` 1,58,460/- for honouring 298 teaching and non-teaching staff members in the Accolade for Aces conducted this year. This good practice has a tremendous impact on the improvement of the quality of our teachers. VII. INNOVATIVE PRACTICES 1. IQAC, the supreme body of the college which plans for the enhancement and sustenance of quality education, convened three meetings in the year 2018-2019 and suggested innovative plans and recommended new proposals to the Principal and the Management. Based on its recommendations and suggestions, steps were taken to motivate the teachers to develop interest in doing research, undertaking major / minor projects, and assist them in the area of modern documentation process and other such activities. The newly appointed teachers were also been given orientation in these areas. 2. An entry level test was conducted on 04th July 2018 for the freshers to assess their competency level in the prime areas of their study. 3. IQAC organized one-week Free Computer Awareness Course for the first year UG Arts students. 4. Internal Quality Assurance Cell organized Faculty Development Programme on Employability Skills from 10.07.2018 to 13.07.2018. 5. Internal Quality Assurance Cell organized Faculty Development Programme on Stress Management on 20.09.2018. 6. Internal Quality Assurance Cell and Central Library jointly organized Faculty Development Programme on NDL Club launch and Awareness Programme on E-Resources on 09.10.2018. 7. Internal Quality Assurance Cell organized Faculty Development Programme on Bloom’s Taxonomy (under UGC Autonomous Grant) on 15.03.2019 & 19.03.2019. 8. Campus Interviews were arranged for the students of various disciplines and the students were placed in reputed companies with decent salary package. Before attending the interviews, they were given training through mock interviews. In this academic year, 30 companies made their selection trials inside the campus. 11. Award for the Best Library User was instituted in order to promote the reading habit among the students.
