Amazon: The Everything Store – a Review It is hard to believe that Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in just 1994. With revenues of over $70 billion and a market value of over $130 billion today, its success has been so vast that the lexicon of modern finance has been expanded to accommodate a new verb - to be "Amazoned" is to have one's business model displaced by the online phenomenon. I admit to being both fascinated and (as an investor) terrified by Amazon. So I decided to read Brad Stone's, "The Everything Store". It's an excellent read, the main observations from which, as I see them at least, I will summarise below. Narrative Fallacy Stone recalls a discussion he had with Bezos as he sought the founder's cooperation with the project. Bezos asked how Stone would handle the "narrative fallacy" – a tremendously insightful question (reminiscent of Daniel Kahneman). The story behind Bezos' and Amazon's success is very complex. Bezos was an extremely gifted child (his mother clams he disassembled his crib with a screwdriver at aged three), whose family nurtured his talents and who attended a school program for gifted children. I have little doubt that even if Amazon never came to be, Bezos would have achieved great success in some other endeavour. Amazon, on the other hand, could easily have vanished before we ever came to know it. A few examples here indicate this point. It was seemingly at hedge fund D.E. Shaw that Bezos began to understand the extent of the potential of the Internet for new business opportunity. -

How Amazon Exploits and Undermines Small Businesses, and Why Breaking It Up Would Revive American Entrepreneurship By Stacy Mitchell and Ron Knox, June 2021 Most Americans believe that Amazon’s outsized power is dangerous and must be reined in. A recent poll found that nearly 80 percent of voters believe Amazon should be subject to greater regulation, and more than half support breaking it up.1 A growing number of lawmakers are moving to do just that.2 A 15-month investigation by the House Judiciary Amazon’s Cut of Sellers’ Revenue Committee concluded that Amazon “has monopoly power over many small- and medium-sized businesses.”3 It called for breaking up the company by separating its major 30% business lines into stand-alone firms and regulating its online marketplace to ensure that sellers are treated fairly. 28% Both Democrats and Republicans have voiced support for 4 these measures. 24% 23% As lawmakers have grown increasingly serious about 21% addressing Amazon’s harms, Amazon has sought to portray 19% itself as beneficial to independent small businesses.5 In splashy campaigns, press releases, and lobbying at the Capitol, Amazon contends that it has “a mutually beneficial relationship” with the small businesses that depend on its platform, that these businesses are “thriving,” and that “our interests are well aligned.”6 Small business owners themselves tell a very different story. In a 2019 survey, three-quarters of independent retailers ranked Amazon’s dominance as a major threat to their survival, and only 11 percent of those selling on its 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 site described their experience as successful.7 It’s not only Notes: Amazon’s financials break out revenue from third-party seller fees, but do not include seller retailers; small consumer product manufacturers, book payments for product advertising.
