And you didn’t have to travel 12 hours on a ferry Bboat from Athens to reach them. I’ve lived in Greece on and off since I was six. I remember, on the Friday after- noons of my youth, I’d jump on the back of my friend Oliver’s motorbike and off we’d go to the scrappy port of Lavrion for the one-hour ferry to Kea, the closest of the Cyclades Islands to Attica. Oliver’s mother had rented a tiny farmhouse on the sage-scented slopes of a valley. Built of solid rock, the low-slung house was only accessible by a prickly footpath. The walls were as thick as the trunks of the ancient oak trees that shaded the terrace. There was no electricity; we cooked in a wood-fired oven outside, played cards by paraffin lamp and fell into a dreamless sleep in the womb of the cool stone walls, which sloped inwards until they almost met above our bed. His family was forced to immigrate to Turkey for fear of losing their Turkish identity. He graduated from Ege University Faculty of Agriculture in 1969 and earned his professorship in 1989. He has authored 12 course books and over 200 scientific articles. He has always tried to pass novelties and scientific knowledge on to farmers, who are his target audience. These activities earned him many scientific awards and plaques of appreciation. His achievements include •“Gödence Village Agricultural Development Cooperative Achievement Award, 2003”; •“TMMOB Chamber of Agricultural Engineers Scientific Award, 2004”; and •“Turkish Sheep Breeders Scientific Award, 2009”. His name was given to a Street in Acıpayam (denizli) in 2003. In addition to his course books, Prof. Kaymakçı is also the author of five books on agricultural and scientific policies. They include •Notes on Turkey’s Agriculture, 2009; •Agricultural Articles Against Global Capitalization, 2010; •Agriculture Is Independence, 2011; •Famine and Imperialism, 2012 (Editor); and •Science Political Articles Against Globalization, 2012. Kaymakçı is the President of the Rhodes and Kos and the Dodecanese Islands Turks Culture and Solidarity Association since 1996. Under his presidency, the association reflected the problems of the Turks living in Rhodes and Kos to organizations including Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Parliamentary Association of the European Council (PA CE), the United Nations and the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FEUN).

ABSTRACT Outcrops of friable calc-arenite of late Quaternary age, known as Poros rock, from Mykonos, Rhenia and Delos, are characterized sedimentologically and their cements are studied in thin sec- tion. Calcarenites of beach, coastal eolian dune, and pedogenic alluvium origin are distinguished sedimentologically. Beach calcarenite shows marine cementation by a uniform rim of micrite and bladed Mg-calcite. Some eolian dunes show precipitation of needle aragonite, probably from sea spray, but the dominant cements are sparry calcite from groundwater and vadose zone deposition of irregular micrite with meniscus and gravitational textures. Pedogenically cemented alluvium shows the characteristics of caliche, such as rhizoliths with clots and globules of micrite and circum- granular cracking. One outcrop of calcarenite from Panormos Bay in Mykonos shows beach facies at +2.5 to +4.0 m above present sea level, overlying cemented debris flow deposits. This occur- rence is interpreted as Tyrrhenian in age (isotopic stage 5e) and implies regional long-term subsi- dence of 2 cm/ka, consistent with the lack of marine terraces in the area.
