THE ART OF VICTORIAN Dr. Laurence Shafe [email protected] PHOTOGRAPHY www.shafe.uk The Art of Victorian Photography The invention and blossoming of photography coincided with the Victorian era and photography had an enormous influence on how Victorians saw the world. We will see how photography developed and how it raised issues concerning its role and purpose and questions about whether it was an art. The photographic revolution put portrait painters out of business and created a new form of portraiture. Many photographers tried various methods and techniques to show it was an art in its own right. It changed the way we see the world and brought the inaccessible, exotic and erotic into the home. It enabled historic events, famous people and exotic places to be seen for the first time and the century ended with the first moving images which ushered in a whole new form of entertainment. • My aim is to take you on a journey from the beginning of photography to the end of the nineteenth century with a focus on the impact it had on the visual arts. • I focus on England and English photographers and I take this title narrowly in the sense of photographs displayed as works of fine art and broadly as the skill of taking photographs using this new medium. • In particular, • Pre-photographic reproduction (including drawing and painting) • The discovery of photography, the first person captured, Fox Talbot and The Pencil of Light • But was it an art, how photographers created ‘artistic’ photographs, ‘artistic’ scenes, blurring, the Pastoral • The Victorian -

This book cannot be expected to please everybody, and it makes no attempt to conciliate those who prefer sentiment to truth, or who allow their reading of historical events to be distorted by present-day controversies, whether ecclesiastical or political. In that respect it tries to live up to the dictum of Samuel Butler that 'he excels most who hits the golden mean most exactly in the middle'. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract A person does not experience architecture as a purely physical construct. Lived space transcends mere materiality, as each individual experiences the world outside oneself through the unique fi lter of one’s own mind. In this way, architecture becomes subjective: infl uenced by the memories and imagination of its viewers, who use the physical realm as a take-off point from which to shape their own environments within the context of their respective psyches. Fictional architecture (or the architecture of narrative) uses this same concept to build the environments in fi lm and literature; although, in these cases, the cues given to an audience are images, sounds and/or words rather than three-dimensional space. The term ‘architecture of narrative’, as used in this thesis, refers to the architecture of books and fi lms which must rely on imaginary environments. This type of architecture is free of the strict rules and regulations which govern built form in the corporeal world; however, in order for an audience to relate to and engage with these imaginary environments, it must still employ boundaries which give the fi ctional realm stability, coherence and continuity. -
Medieval Cartularies of Great Britain: Amendments and Additions to the Dams Catalogue
MEDIEVAL CARTULARIES OF GREAT BRITAIN: AMENDMENTS AND ADDITIONS TO THE DAMS CATALOGUE Introduction Dr God+ Davis' Medieval Cartulari4s of Great Britain: a Short Catalogue (Longmans, 1958) has proved to be an invaluable resource for medieval historians. However, it is nearly forty years since its publication, and inevitably it is no longer completely up-to-date. Since 1958 a number of cartularies have been published, either as full editions or in calendar form. Others have been moved to different repositories. Some of those cartularies which Davis described as lost have fortunately since been rediscovered, and a very few new ones have come to light since the publication of the original catalogue. This short list seeks to remedy some of these problems, providing a list of these changes. The distinction drawn in Davis between ecclesiastical and secular cartularies has been preserved and where possible Davis' order has also been kept. Each cartulary's reference number in Davis, where this exists, is also given. Those other monastic books which Davis describes as too numerous to include have not been mentioned, unless they had already appeared in the original catalogue. Where no cartulary exists, collections of charters of a monastic house edited after 1958 have been included. There will, of course, be developments of which I am unaware, and I would be most grateful for any additional information which could be made known in a subsequent issue of this Bulletin. Much of the information here has been gathered hmpublished and typescript library and repository catalogues. -

Lacock Abbey by Cyril May PICTURESQUE Lacock Abbey lies in West Wiltshire, three miles south of Chippenham, alongside a meadow which borders the River Avon. It was founded as a religious house in 1232 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, in memory of her deceased husband, William Longspee, the son of Henry II, and she became the first Abbess in 1240. The Abbey was the centre of some exceedingly good work, for besides those who entered the professional life of a nun, whole families could be received, as temporary guests of the Abbess if they were in need of shelter. It was also the centre of relief when there was illness in the adjoining village. The Abbess remained in control for eighteen years, when she resigned her office on account of age and infirmity, and died five years later at the age of seventy-three. A scheme for suppressing all monasteries came in the reign of Henry VIII and the Abbey was visited by the King’s Commissioners in 1535 where they found no disorder of any kind and the nuns were carrying out their work in an efficient manner. After a reprieve of several years as one of the lesser monasteries, Lacock was surrendered to the King. On July 16th, 1540, the Abby and its lands were purchased from the Crown by William Sharrington, afterwards Sir William Sharrington, who converted the conventual building to for a residence for himself. He was appointed by Henry VIII in 1546 as one of the Masters of the Mint at Bristol, and was knighted in 1547, but two years later he was arrested for fraudulent practices and sent to the Tower. -

The cloth towns of Bradford-on-Avon, Trowbridge and Westbury were thriving when John Leland visited in 1540; but GD Ramsay thought they had passed their golden age by 1550 and declined during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Joan Thirsk – following the precedent of John Aubrey, who wrote a survey of north Wiltshire in the 1660s – characterised the region as ‘cheese country’. Based on new archival research, this thesis argues that, far from declining, cloth manufacture in west Wiltshire grew throughout the Tudor era and remained strong under the early Stuarts; that production of this crucial trade commodity gave the region national significance; and that profits from the woollen trade were the main drivers of change in west Wiltshire over the period 1530-1680. -

Third Census of H. Fox Talbot's the Pencil Of
Third Census of H. Fox Talbot’s The Pencil of Nature Larry J. Schaaf This article presents the third census of H. Fox Talbot’s The Pencil of Nature (1844–46), the first commercially published photographically illustrated book. The first census was published in the Introductory Volume to the 1989 Anniversary Facsimile of The Pencil of Nature, the first complete examination of this seminal work. The publication of that census provoked the discovery of a number of new copies, and an updated census was published in History of Photography in 1993. Since that time, additional copies have emerged and quite a few changes of owner- ship have come about, leading to this third census. Since the original copies of The Pencil of Nature were assembled by hand, variations occurred, and defects in the original binding and later owners’ actions led to bibliographic confusion about what constituted an authentic copy. This question is considered in a brief bibliographical summary and analysis.
