KeyNote Speaker: Minister for Housing and Community Development The Hon Gerry MacCarthy MLA Environment, Transport and Infrastructure Reference Group (ETIRG) LGANT is in the process of rehabilitating two crossings on the Buymarr Road in East Arhnem region. Once completed floodways should ensure safe access for community members. Works were completed by local contractors from Gove “Remote Housing and Construction”. Another major project that is being undertaken by LGANT is on the Robinson River Road in the Roper Gulf Region where the Telstra Hill jump up was realigned and widening with associated warning signs. This work was in two stages civil construction by Cairns industry and stage two the signeage was erected by PDG – NT Pty Ltd both companies from Borroloola enhancing regional economics and employment. Meeting procedures training Training in meeting procedures for new members and staff were held in Katherine for the Victoria Daly Regional Council elected members on October 2017. Allan McGill, former CEO of the City of Darwin and the Department responsible for local government, delivered the training over the one day and members found the training informative and engaging. Congratulations go to the small community of Finke in the MacDonnell Regional Council for winning this year's Territory Tidy Town! MacDonnell Regional council has a history of winning a range of awards for its efforts in embracing responsibility for clean communities. “I knew our communities were doing great work – but to be told, four years running, that we are the Best Regional Council suggests we are doing something right!” MacDonnell Regional Council CEO, Jeff MacLeod said. The annual Tidy Town awards recognise efforts of council staff and residents from communities across the Northern Territory and this year was presented by the Deputy Administrator the Honourable Pat Miller AO and other civic leaders in a gala ceremony at the Convention Centre in Alice Springs. Workers representing MacDonnell Regional Council communities came into Alice Springs to attend this year’s Territory Tidy Town awards ceremony. Statewide Super and the Local Government Association of NT have partnered to recognise Northern Territory locals who are making a real difference to the community by acknowledging their extraordinary contributions to NT communities. The Statewide Super Heroes award is an ideal opportunity to celebrate everything that they do. There is still time to show your gratitude to a friend, work mate or family member who makes a valuable contribution to the Northern Territory community by performing admirable and extraordinary acts. Nominations are open until November 8 Winners in regional and metro areas will win $2000 in cash and $1000 to donate to a charity of their choice. Annual LGANT Member Survey As part of LGANT's program of ensuring we are meeting the expectations of member councils, LGANT conducts an annual member satisfaction survey. This survey is sent to Mayors/Presidents, nominated LGANT representatives and CEOs of all member councils. The information collected from this survey assists the LGANT Executive with its annual strategic planning conducted each February and will be presented at the first 2018 LGANT general meeting. We would appreciate it if you would spare some time to complete our survey which has been forwarded with an attached link. The closing date for responses is 31 December 2017. ACCC’S NORTHERN AUSTRALIA INSURANCE INQUIRY Issues paper The ACCC has released an issues paper for their inquiry into residential building, contents and strata insurance in northern Australia. The inquiry will help to address concerns about insurance affordability, promote more informed and more competitive insurance markets and make a difference for consumers in northern Australia.
