Most Marines who work at the motor pool have either a driver or mechanic MOS, Ormerod said. But units assign "incidental" drivers, who may have an infantry or artillery MOS, for example, to maintain and drive its vehicles and accomplish its transport mission. "If they're going to be driving it," Ormerod said, "they're more than likely going to take better care of it." The regimental mechanics are not allowed to provide every echelon of maintenance at the motor pool. If more in-depth maintenance is needed, such as the rebuilding of engines and transmissions, , the vehicles must be sent to the mechanics at BSSG-1. "We only provide preventive and corrective maintenan, e here," Ormerod said. Preventive maintenance checks are done on a vehicle before, during and after its operation. Yeltsin's statement to the news media about the possibility of American POWs from Vietnam being transferred to the Soviet Union has failed to produce any new evidence. The disintegration of the Soviet Union has, for the first time, allowed the United States access to information which may resolve some cases of American MIAs. A group, the U.S. Russian Joint Commission on POWIMIAs, has been searching archives in the former Soviet Union and the United States to find some answers. Co-chaired by former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union Malcolm Toon and Volkogonov, the committee was formally inaugurated March 26, 1992. Alan Ptak and A. Denis Clift represent DoD to the commission. Ptak is deputy assistant secretary of defense for POW/MIA Affairs; Clift is chief of staff of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Others on the committee include representatives from Congress, the State Department and the National Archives. The problem for the commission is that while much is alleged, there is little hard evidence to date. The U.S. government needs to analyze and verify information gained from the former Soviet archives. Officials said the Russians had turned over more than 300 pages of documents to the American delegates. "Initial indications are that the documents support some, but certainly not all, of Volkogonov's report," Ptak said during testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "This shortcoming is particularly significant for the specific allegations regarding downed aircrews and Americans held prisoner." The U.S. Army is serving as executive agent for the commission. The analysis of Russian documents must be correlated with appropriate American records. Retrieving the relevant documents from U.S. data bases is a massive undertaking, Ptak said, but the Army is making progress. The search has not turned up live American POWs in the former Soviet Union. Ptak said this has not lessened the Russian commitment to open archives and accelerate the process of full disclosure. Ptak said the first concern of DoD is for the families. "It is especially frustrating for us in DoD to have this new this card will take you home. information and not be able to immediately contact families and give them news regarding The A MrCalling Curd. Girl Scouts win national environmental award

By Cpl. J. KInchen-Schneider After winning the state-level award in July, the girls species living in Nu'upia Ponds here. submitted a for Sloe Water package the Department of the Interior- The ponds were originally built by the Hawaiian sponsored annual contest. monarchy several centuries ago, and through several The contest recognizes the ecological and environmental restoration efforts, they remain a national treasure. The Mokapu Girl Scout Troop recently took first place achievements of Girl Scouts. The Mokapu troop beat out ponds by in the youth category of the national Take Pride in 850 other applicants for the national award. The station Girl Scouts maintain the cutting America Contest for its environmental work in Nu'upia The out mango roots, pickleweed and building nests for the girls won the award for their work repairing and endangered birds. ponds. rebuilding the nests of Hawaiian stilts, an endangered Debra Truitt, Mokapu troop leader explained that the nests are made of inner tubes from tires, mud, grass. These are finished by the sun, which dries them into solid formation. The nests are designed so that the front areas of the nests are secluded from wind and rain. However, the rears of the nests are open. The nests are placed in the middle of the ponds to protect them from mongoose and any other predators that might try to eat the eggs the stilts lay there during nesting season. The Girl Scouts also clean out the pickleweed and mango roots to keep them from completely covering the ponds and to keep the mongoose from getting to the nests. "Mongoose can walk across mango roots and pickleweed," Truitt explained. "As long as there is some type of root or vine there, they can get to the eggs and the birds are in danger of becoming extinct." While the Girl Scouts invest a great deal of effort in their environmental endeavor, they don't do it alone. Marines also play a key role in the upkeep of the ponds. "The Marines use (AAVs) to flatten the areas the girls can't reach on foot," Truitt said. "It's a great help to have the Marines on foot and in the machines because some of the mango trees are huge." The whole point of the contest, as well as the merit badges the girls earned for their environmental works is "so they're doing something to preserve the community, the state and the species," Truitt said. Girl Scouts here recently won national and state awards In the Take Pride In America contests, July 21 and 28, respecttvely.
