  • Proposed Littleton Wind Farm Introduction
April 2021 Naturally Driven Proposed Littleton Wind Farm Introduction Bord na Móna is an iconic commercial semi-state company that was established almost 90 years ago to develop Ireland’s peat resources for the economic benefit of Ireland and to enhance security of energy supply. In recent times, the business has gone through radical change, announcing the new “Brown to Green” strategy, moving away from peat, and focusing on renewable energy, recycling, and peatland rehabilitation operations. A key objective of this strategy involves using the land to continue to underpin Ireland’s energy independence by developing green, sustainable energy sources to assist with Ireland’s commitment to achieve 70% renewable electricity by 2030. Bord na Móna is committed to investing to deliver low carbon energy solutions in Ireland, thereby continuing its pivotal role in contributing to the State’s energy security. To achieve this Bord na Móna will significantly increase its existing renewable energy asset base beyond the current installed capacity of almost 400 MW. The company has been a leader in the Irish renewables sector for some time, having been involved in the development of Ireland’s first ever commercial wind farm on its Bellacorick Bog in Co Mayo in 1992. As part of the company’s Brown to Green Strategy, Bord na Móna has identified Littleton Bog Group as having the potential for the development of a wind farm. November Photo Competition Winner Philomena Brady 2 The Proposed Development - Littleton Wind Farm The Development Study Area (as shown in Figure 1 below) for the proposed wind farm is part of the Littleton Bog Group located in County Tipperary.

  • The Bowles of Valcartier's Roots in Ireland
The Bowles of Valcartier’s Roots in Ireland by Tom LaPorte March, 2016 At least 10 years ago I was told that the Bowles of Valcartier had a family reference, perhaps in a family bible that their ancestor who came to Canada, John Bowles, had been born about 1790 to parents, Joseph Bowles and Ellen Mackey of Springhill, County Tipperary, Ireland. I have never been able to find any proof of that until this month when the Roman Catholic Church registers kept at the National Library of Ireland were finally made available and searchable on the findmypast.com website. Although there were no records in the database for Springhill I found that the closest Roman Catholic Church to Springhill was at Killenaule. In the Killenaule registers I found that the family tradition was correct. John Bowles bp. Sept. 14, 1790 Killenaule, co. Tipperary; parents: Joseph Bowles and Ellena Mackey Godmother: Maria Phelan One researcher stated that John Bowles was b. between 1788 and 1791 and that he married a Mary Pollard at Gortnahoe Parish and their first child was born there about 1817. Fortunately, the Gortnahoe Parish Registers are also in the newly available Irish Church Records database. I found John Bowles and Mary Pollard’s marriage there in 1814. Feb. 15, 1814 John Bowles, labourer/collier (ie. coal miner) m. Mary Pollard, both of The Commons Feb. 15, 1814 Gortnahoe Parish Witnesses: Patrick Fogarty, Patrick Pollard and David Bowles It’s significant that David Bowles, who must have been a brother or cousin of John’s, signed as a witness at this baptism in a Catholic Church.

ROINN COSANTA HISTORY, 1913-21 BUREAU OF MILITARY STATEMENT BY WITNESS DOCUMENT 1487 NO. W.S. Witness Colonel Jerry Ryan, Ballynonty, Thurles, Co. Tipperary Identity. Battalion Tipperary Commandant 1st 2nd (Mid) Brigade. Subject. Mid Activities of 1st Battalion 2nd Tipperary Brigade Irish Volunteers, 1918-1921 Conditions if any stipulated by witness Nil S.1028 File No Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY COLONEL BYAH JERRY Ballynonty, Thurles, Co. Tipperary Commandant, 1st Battalion, 2nd (Mid) Tipperary Brigade. In the 1912 I was sworn into the Irish Republican year Brotherhood by a man named Harding at his home in christchurck Place, Dublin. I was then 19 years of age and at the time I was temporarily residing in the city. A year or so later I returned to my home at Moycarkey and took up a position in Thurles. During year 1914 a company of Irish Volunteers, whic the I joined, was formed in the Moycarkey-Two Mile Borris area and I remained a member until the split in the Volunteer movement took place later on in that year. As the majority of the members then favoured the policy of the late John E. Redmond, the company affiliated to the National Volunteers and this led to my severing my connection with it. Irish Volunteer activities of anything of a worth-while nature did not commence in Thurles and the surrounding parishes until the reorganisation of the Volunteer in 1917. Prior to 1916, Mr. James movement Kennedy of St., Thurles, then the Assistant Parnell Town Clerk, sworn a number of men in the various had parishes into the I.R.B., but when the Rising took place, we had no properly organised Irish Volunteer unit in the district.

  • Settlement Hierarchy
Settlement Hierarchy Introduction The Corporate Vision for Tipperary County Council enshrines the principle of Tipperary as a desirable place to live, with attractive towns and picturesque and vibrant villages, surrounded by beautiful countryside. In line with this vision, it is planned that future population growth in the county will be accommodated in existing towns, villages in line with a county settlement hierarchy, and also through sensitive development in the countryside, with infrastructure delivered in a timely fashion to ensure sustainable and inclusive communities. Tipperary County Council has at present two County Development Plans; as follows: South Tipperary County Development Plan 2009 (as varied) North Tipperary County Development Plan 2010 (as varied) In 2015, the Council put in place a new strategic county-wide planning framework, which included the development of a new County Settlement Hierarchy to facilitate the development of sustainable communities throughout the county. The County Settlement Hierarchy was incorporated into both County Development Plans by way of a variation process. The Settlement Hierarchy is consistent with the National Spatial Strategy and Regional Planning Guidelines, while recognising the diversity of scale, character of the county’s towns and villages. Each settlement has a complementary role in achieving growth and prosperity in the county. It is recognised that rural villages, along with the large towns, play an essential role by acting as sustainable development centres within rural communities. The Settlement Hierarchy, associated location map, and an outline of the role and function of each settlement is set out below. Figure 1: Tipperary County Settlement Hierarchy Regional Town Clonmel Sub-Regonal Towns Nenagh & Thurles District Towns Carrick on Suir, Roscrea, Tipperary, Cashel, Cahir and Templemore.
