Between them, the mechanical child and the submersibles have saved thousands of years of philosophy, literature, science and history.

But there’s another sort of knowledge, just as valuable. In a world where any sort of frivolity or entertainment is forbidden, a small but courageous number of people travel the countryside, singing the old songs and telling the old stories. Constantly at risk of betrayal, they call themselves Fetchers. (Book 3: Fetcher)

Over the centuries, the Anti-Machinists known as the Devouts have done their utmost to wipe out both the submersibles and the storytellers. They have almost succeeded. Of the original submersibles, there’s only the giant Rampart and the tiny Claw left, and the Fetchers are down to a single family. None of them realise just how much is at stake. But they’re about to find out …

That is, until a boy is discovered, frozen on an iceberg, and brought onto the ship. No one knows where he has come from, and when he recovers consciousness he claims to have forgotten even his name.

The tribes don’t trust strangers; they haven’t seen one for three hundred years. When Chief Engineer Albie decides to throw the boy back onto the ice, Petrel saves him and hides him away in the forgotten corners of the ship, hoping he will be her friend. What she doesn’t know is that for the last three hundred years, the ship has been guarding a secret. A secret that could change the world. A secret that the boy has been sent to destroy, along with the ship and everyone on it …

‘A fascinating and eye-opening account of a war that does not make it into Western media terribly often. An unsentimental account of Shahana’s daily struggle to keep herself and her younger brother fed, clothed and sheltered. Suitable for upper primary to middle secondary. Recommended.’ Magpies

‘Despite the terrible conditions and events, the story has a positive quality to it. Sometimes in novels like these the bleakness and futility of life leave me feeling powerless and unsatisfied, but not so with Shahana. She is a resourceful, courageous and intelligent girl, reminiscent of Deborah Ellis’ Afghani heroine, Parvana.’ Viewpoint

‘I am a big advocate for the use of fiction to raise important issues with children. Shahana gives tween and teen readers a wonderful relatable character to help them gain insight into the challenges faced by children their own age struggling to live in environments where they deal with constant physical danger yet courageously hold onto a sense of hope, family and an appreciation of their culture and community.’ Kids Book Review

Much like Ruth Parks’ classic Harp in the South and Kylie Tennant’s seminal Ride on Stranger, Racing the Moon holds a window up to working-class Sydney of the 1930s.

There are some strong themes in this story such as cruelty and abuse (both domestic and sexual) but it’s touched on in a way that's appropriate for the readership. Joe’s story covers the full gamut of emotional experiences and doesn’t dwell on the negative. In fact the opposite is true as it is his resilience and optimism that triumphs in the end.

Michelle Morgan has worked as a librarian and teacher and has written several plays. Racing the Moon is her first novel. She lives near Bowral, New South Wales.

She wakes, confused, in a hospital on a hill. Like Readership: Ages 13+ others ‘lucky’ enough to survive the outbreak, she is taken in by The School, a survival camp that teaches students how to navigate the new world. As Pandora starts to regain her strength, she starts noticing things that don’t quite fit. Like the giant wall supposedly built to keep them safe— but from what? Who are the villagers on the other side? And why are some of the students having the same horrific nightmare? Pandora digs for answers with vehemence and readers will follow her at the same furious pace. Page after page, Barry Jonsberg maintains the suspense. Every answer is met with a new question. This relentless pace offers no time for guessing, so each shocking plot twist comes as a jarring slap, as much to the reader as to Pandora herself. Jonsberg is an exceptional writer who seems just as comfortable with dystopian world- building as with the more lighthearted realism of 2013 award-winner My Life as an Alphabet. In this trilogy, Pandora Jones will push her way through the wealth of dystopian fiction to stand rightfully at the forefront of the genre. Five Stars, Bookseller + Publisher

Book 2 - PANDORA JONES: DECEPTION (October 2014) Pan escapes to find a plague-free world, but dangers still abound and she finds herself – once again – in life-threatening situations. When she is captured and returned to The School, she learns that it is an ‘ark’ quarantined to ensure humanity continues when an inevitable plague does occur. Because Pan has been made a carrier of the disease her escape into the world has infected everyone she came into contact with – making a real plague pandemic imminent. She has doomed the world.

I was with Rose and Michael and Liv the whole way. Every single character, large and small, was flesh and blood real to me. Her writing is masterful and has so much to say to young people and those who live and work with them.' Erica Wagner, Publisher

‘An amazing piece of writing. I could not put it down. It's very dark and deeply confronting, although strangely there are some beautiful truths in there, too.' Jennifer Castles, Editor

‘Wow – what a mesmerising story. I tore through the story with a sense of impending doom and then that car-crash horror that kept me riveted as I realised there was no way this was going to end well.' Kylie Westaway, Publishing Operations Manager

Silverfish Reading Group reactions: 'Can't rave enough about A Small Madness. Really, really good raw writing which is unadorned with anything artificial or overblown. Borderline tears/heart palpitations the whole way through. A completely effective evocation of mood and any teenager or parent reading this will find it relevant and compelling. If you're in contact with Ms Touchell, tell her thank you and congratulations and well done! Absolutely superb, distressing stuff handled with frankness and openness. Wow, can't rave enough.' Longest Silverfish report I've ever written! 10/10.’ Cameron, 18

'It is addictive. It really drew me in and I couldn't put it down. 8/10.' Clare, 17

'I loved it! This book hooked me straight from the start. I loved how raw it was, it was very intense and I just loved everything about it. I think one of the best things about the book is how confronting it is. It's really well written and the best thing was that I had no idea what to expect next. I also loved how the point of view switched a lot and I really got to know all of the characters. I love this book!! … 9.5/10.' Jackson, 14

'The thing I most enjoyed about A Small Madness is the way Ms Touchell so realistically and brutally depicts the inner workings of secrecy and unhappiness within families. All the characters felt real to me and all their flaws made them seem even more alive, as they reacted and responded to events in a natural and honest way, true to how I would expect them to. Their consequent breakdowns also felt sincere and spot on to their personalities. The theme of "people see, but they do not see" was striking and also very realistic and applicable to real life, and not just the fictional world. … 8/10.' Georgia, 17
