Introduction Existentialism is often referred to as a philosophical school, although its primary characteristic is that it is not a school at all. On the contrary, the many thinkers who have dealt with existential philosophy have taken quite different approaches to the subject, and most of them have also rejected to be subsumed under the label of "existentialism." Only a small group of French philosophers, including, most notably, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, actually called themselves existentialists. It was especially these latter two, Albert Camus, Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, and the German Friedrich Nietzsche, whose existential views and ideas influenced American culture and literature between the late 19 th century and the early 1970s. The most significant impact was indisputably that of the French existentialists, whose philosophies and literary works became highly popular in the U.S. after World War II. As a matter of fact, their popularity was so great that, as a side effect of the dissemination of French existentialism in the American mainstream as well as on university campuses, strong clichés became attached to it. Many of these images are still associated with existentialism today: Paris cafés, black turtleneck sweaters, smoking cigarettes, and also a rather nihilistic outlook on life. However, it will be shown that the latter is indeed a cliché, and that French existentialism considered itself – and actually was – a positive philosophy. The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the impact of existentialism on American culture and literature, on the one hand, and to exemplify this influence by providing an analysis of two 20 th -century American novels, on the other. Since one of the defining features of existentialism is a stress on the individual and his or her subjective perspective, literature has always been its most important vehicle of expression. Philosophers like Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, or Sartre have expressed their fundamental views in literary works or made use of the stylistic features of literature to convey their philosophical views. However, there are two kinds of existential literature. The first one is the one just mentioned, written by philosophers who incorporated key concepts of their thought into literary works. The second kind is literature which deals with fundamentally existential topics without being explicitly philosophical. As will be shown in chapters 3 and 4, which deal with existential literature in general, and with American 5 literature in particular, the range of novels and plays that can be interpreted existentially is a vast one. A closer look at relevant American authors will reveal that there is an existential tradition in American literature, with a limited number of authors who explicitly addressed existential themes. Some of these authors were directly influenced by or identified with existentialism, such as Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison, whereas others, including Hemingway, Faulkner, or Salinger, focussed on existential subjects in their own ways, without apparent philosophical backgrounds. After a survey of existential philosophers and writers, as well as of typical elements and features of their literature, the center of attention in my discussion of American existential literature will move to two 20 th -century novels, which will be examined from an existential angle. In fact, as I am fond of saying, the ‘sixties’ as we think and speak of that generation, really took place in the following decade, that is: in the 1970s, years I spent in high school, in college, including a hitchhiking trip cross country, alone and at grievous personal risk, especially because I was so out of step with the sexual freedom of the times that I refused to sleep, just on principle, with any one of the many drivers who stopped to give me a ride.

Certainly, in this post-war era (where Sartre’s 1945 Paris lecture ‘Existentialism Is a Humanism’ sought to defend the ethical credentials of existentialism in the face of the charge of nihihsm) and more so today in the wake of the Black Notebooks scandal, Heidegger’s philosophy falters on ethical grounds as on political complications.

LaSusa 2010 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This project offers a unique contribution to the scholarship on Jean-Paul Sartre’s concept of bad faith by providing a sustained exploration of bad faith in the context of contemporary tourism. More specifically, I explore the bad faith of what I call “checklist tourism,” which defines the tourist trip as a rapid succession of visits from one “must- see” site to the next, snapping photos and collecting souvenirs along the way. I argue that checklist tourism offers a safe and comfortable structure for travel that protects tourists against Sartrean anguish—that is, the experience of alienation, fear, freedom, and responsibility—that travel can sometimes evoke. This analysis contributes to the literature on bad faith in three main ways. First, I provide an extended analysis of the Sartrean spirit of seriousness, highlighting part of this concept that has thus far been underdeveloped in the scholarship. I argue that checklist tourism manifests the spirit of seriousness, which accepts the obligation of “must-see” sites and belief in the transcendent value of the material objects seen on the tour. Second, I explore the embodied bad faith of the possession and appropriation of the material world (rather than studying the possession of people, as most scholars have done), arguing that the tourist attempts to appropriate tourist sites through bodily engagement with them.

    SPECIAL ISSUE ––– MAX DEUTSCHER VOLUME 1V ISSUE 1 2009 ISSN: 1833-878X Pages 71-78 Marguerite La Caze Max Deutscher’s Genre of Philosophy ABSTRACT Max Deutscher has explored questions in the philosophy of mind, linked with ethics and political philosophy. He originally studied analytic philosophy with Gilbert Ryle, then focussed on Jean-Paul Sartre and other phenomenological thinkers to explore questions about the nature of the other. In this paper, I explore some of the central themes and motifs in Max Deutscher’s work, concentrating on conceptions of community and our relation with the other in his reading of Sartre’s Being and Nothingness (2003), and noting how a love of the arts informs his approach to philosophy. My interest is in what makes his work distinctive from that of other philosophers, and after providing a context for reading his work, I will concentrate on one example from his book Genre and Void: Looking back at Sartre and Beauvoir (2003) to make the abstract discussion of genre more concrete. BIOGRAPHY Dr. Marguerite La Caze is a Senior Lecturer in philosophy at the University of Queensland. She has research interests in European philosophy and feminist philosophy in ethics, political philosophy, and aesthetics. Her publications include The Analytic Imaginary (2002) and Integrity and the Fragile Self, with Damian Cox and Michael Levine (2003).
