False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen
False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen by Nicholas Vick November, 2012 Director of Thesis: Amanda Klein Major Department: English Woody Allen is an auteur who is deeply concerned with the visual presentation of his cityscapes. However, each city that Allen films is presented in such a glamorous light that the depiction of the cities is falsely authentic. That is, Allen's cityscapes are actually unrealistic recreations based on his nostalgia or stilted view of the city's culture. Allen's treatment of each city is similar to each other in that he strives to create a cinematic postcard for the viewer. However, differing themes and characteristics emerge to define Allen's optimistic visual approach. Allen's hometown of Manhattan is a place where artists, intellectuals, and writers can thrive. Paris denotes a sense of nostalgia and questions the power behind it. Allen's London is primarily concerned with class and the social imperative. Finally, Barcelona is a haven for physicality, bravado, and sex but also uncertainty for American travelers. Despite being in these picturesque and dynamic locations, happiness is rarely achieved for Allen's characters. So, regardless of Allen's dreamy and romanticized visual treatment of cityscapes and culture, Allen is a director who operates in a continuous state of contradiction because of the emotional unrest his characters suffer. Since Monsignor Giulio Ricci first strongly suggested in 1985 that the cloth venerated in Oviedo (Asturias, Northern Spain), known as the Sudarium of Oviedo, and the Shroud of Turin had really been used on the same corpse, the separate study of each cloth has advanced greatly, according to the terminology with which scientific method can approach this hypothesis in this day and age. The paper called "The Sudarium of Oviedo and the Shroud of Turin, two complementary Relics?" was read at the Cagliari Congress on Dating the Shroud in 1990. -

The routes from the old Kingdom of Asturias were the first to take the pilgrims to Santiago. The coastal route was as busy as the other, older pilgrims’ ways long before the Spanish monarchs proclaimed the French Way to be the ideal route, and provided a link for the Christian kingdoms in the North of the Iberian Peninsula. This endorsement of the French Way did not, however, bring about the decline of the Asturian and Galician pilgrimage routes, as the stretch of the route from León to Oviedo enjoyed even greater popularity from the late 11th century onwards. The Northern Route is not a local coastal road for the sole use of the Asturians living along the Alfonso II the Chaste. shoreline. This medieval route gave rise to an Liber Testamenctorum (s. TAKE the MONEY and RUN Woody Allen, 1969
TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN Woody Allen, 1969 TRANSCRIPT NARRATOR On December 1st, 1935, Mrs. Williams Starkwell, the wife of a New Jersey handyman, gives birth to her first and only child. It is a boy, and they name it Virgil. He is an exceptionally cute baby, with a sweet disposition. Before he is 25 years old, he will be wanted by police in six states, for assault, armed robbery, and illegal possession of a wart. Growing up in a slum neighbourhood where the crime rate is amongst the highest in the nation is not easy. Particularly for Virgil, who is small and frail compared to the other children. Virgil Starkwell attends this school, where he scores well on an IQ test, although his behaviour disturbs the teachers. We interviewed Mrs. Dorothy Lowry, a school teacher who remembers Virgil. DOROTHY LOWRY I remember one time, he stole a fountain pen. I didn't want to embarrass him. You know teachers have ways of doing things. So I said to the class. We will all close our eyes, and will the one who took the pen, please return it. Well, while our eyes were closed, he returned the pen. But he took the opportunity of feeling all the girls! Can I say feel? NARRATOR Spending most of his time in the streets, Virgil takes to crime at an early age. He is an immediate failure. He barely manages to escape with a gumball machine stuck on his hand. With both parents working to make ends meet, Virgil becomes closest to his grandfather, a 60-year-old German immigrant who takes the boy to movies and baseball games. -

Commonalities Between the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo
SHS Web of Conferences 15, 00007 (2015) DOI: 10.1051/shsconf/20151500007 C Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2015 Commonalities between the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo Alfonso Sánchez Hermosilla Medical Examiner, EDICES Director (Spanish Sindonology Researh Centre Team), Spain Abstract. In 1989 EDICES (Spanish Sindonology Research Centre Team) started researching about the Sudarium of Oviedo, developing the pioneer research started in the sixties by Monsignor Giulio Ricci, who was a member of the Papal Curia and President of the “Roman Centre of Sindonology”a, and furthermore, he was a scholar of the Gospel of Saint John, the reading of chapter 20, Bible verses 4-8: “4 They were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and was the first to arrive at the tomb.5 Bending down to take a look, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he didn’t go in.6 Following him, Simon Peter entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.7 He also saw the face cloth that had been on Jesus’ head. It wasn’t with the other clothes but was folded up in its own place.8 Then the other disciple, the one who arrived at the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.” This made him look for a second funerary linen used to wrap the corpse of Jesus of Nazareth. This seek led him to the Sudarium of Oviedo. The similarity of the shape of the stains and its size with the Shroud of Turin made him think that he had really found the relic which Saint Joan mentions. -
Moral Luck in the Films of Woody Allen
Moral Luck in the Films of Woody Allen By Ewa Mazierska Fall 2011 Issue of KINEMA MORAL LUCK IN THE FILMS OF WOODY ALLEN We happened to have won the war. But if we didn’t win the war, then history would be created differently. (Judah’s aunt in Crimes and Misdemeanors) The purpose of this essay is to discuss how moral issues are represented in two films of Woody Allen: Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Match Point (2005). My principal tool of analysis is the concept of ’moral luck’, elaborated in an essay of the same title by Bernard Williams (1929-2003) (see Williams 1981a), widely cited as the most important British moral philosopher of his time. I am using this concept because these two Allen films can serve as a perfect illustration of its validity or, conversely, because the idea ofmoralluck supports the way the director deploys moral problems in his films. My discussion will consist of three parts. In the first I will summarise Williams’ concept of moral luck. Inthe second I will apply it to the situations represented in Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point. Finally, I will attempt to contextualise Allen’s ethics, linking it to the ideology dominating in the West. The concept of moral luck In arguably his most influential essay, ’Moral luck’, Bernard Williams presents his views on the character of morality by contrasting them to Kantianism and, in a smaller measure, to Utilitarianism. Hence, in order to understand Williams’ concepts, we should begin by reconstructing his views on these two doctrines. -
