A New Musical That Reminds Us What It Means to Be Human A LETTER FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTORS The world feels like an uncertain, unpredictable, and unknowing place for many. How do we plan for an uncertain future? At IAMA, we look forward, holding the hands of those around us, continuing to shepherd in new voices, and telling stories that create conversations within our community. As we enter our 12th season, we are focused on the future. Not only the future of IAMA and Los Angeles theater, but of the world. We have curated a season of new plays and a new musical that reminds us what it means to be human. Connection is one of the most human experiences we can have and theater is one of the most powerful ways we can connect to a time and place. With the West Coast premiere of A KID LIKE JAKE by Daniel Pearle, the West Coast premiere of FOUND music and original lyrics by Eli Bolan, book by Lee Overtree and Hunter Bell, and the World premiere of THE UNTITLED BABY PLAY by Nina Braddock, we will explore the threads of friendships as we have children and partnerships as we raise them —all the while discovering the meaning of “found” pieces in the world we already live in... and how to make them better. IAMA will continue to draw a thread between ourselves and the entire Los Angeles theater community by creating art that challenges us, makes us think, and above all else, allows us to feel. Stefanie Black and Katie Lowes IAMA Co-Artistic Directors DIRECTOR’S NOTE When a writer stares down the blinking cursor of their computer screen, they hope that what comes next will contain a glimmer of resonance for anyone reading. What Davy Rothbart and the contributors of Found Magazine have discovered is that a note, letter, or piece of paper found in the real world containing even a snippet of a story is often far more revealing. Without context for where these stories have come from or how they turn out, we’re left only to imagine the possibilities. That mystery — of never fully knowing — isn’t unlike the one that clouds our true understanding of one another or our ability to be fully seen. It is the space we hope to bridge to find true connection, even as, contradictorily, so many of us hide ourselves. Enter Found the Musical: a celebration of how messy and multifaceted we truly are. -Moritz von Stuelpnagel KIRKDOUGLASTHEATRE CTGLA.ORG STEFANIE BLACK & KATIE LOWES Co-Artistic Directors | LARA MYRENE Managing Director CYMBRE WALK SKLAR Producing Director Present FOUND: A NEW MUSICAL Book by Hunter Bell and Lee Overtree Music and Original Lyrics by Eli Bolin Based on the Found books and magazines by Davy Rothbart Additional material created in collaboration with Story Pirates Directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel++++ Producer: Lexi Sloan Associate Producer: Celestial Zenith Associate Director: Rhonda Kohl++++ Music Supervision, Music Direction, Arrangements and Orchestrations: Frank Galgano+++ and Matt Castle+ +++ Choreographer: Kathryn Burns Set Designer: Sibyl Wickersheimer++ Costume Designer: Tilly Grimes++ Lighting Designer: Daniel Weingarten++ Sound Designer: Cricket Myers++ Projection Designer: Yee Eun Nam++ Properties Designer: Michael O’Hara Production Stage Manager: Rachel Manheimer Stage Manager: Matthew Fink Assistant Stage Manager: Trevor Lee Sound Engineer: Hannah Cairo Assistant Set Designer: Yuri Okahana-Benson Associate Costume Designer (LA): Edina Hiser Associate Costume Designer (NY): Caity Mulkearns Wardrobe Supervisor: Manee Leija Technical Director: Eduardo Fernandez-Baumann Script PA: Hannah Cairo Production Intern: Samantha Sterenberg Creative Consultant: Glenn Slater Casting: Jordan Bass, CSA Publicity: Lucy Pollak By special arrangement with Victoria Lang, Benjamin Salka & Eva Price. Medora follows the down-but-not- out Medora Hornets varsity basketball team over the course of the 2011 season, capturing their stories both on and off the court. Riding a brutal losing streak when the film begins, the team’s struggle to compete bears eerie resemblance to the town’s fight for survival. An in-depth, deeply personal look at small town life, Medora is also a thrilling, underdog basketball story and an inspiring tale of a community refusing to give up hope despite the brutal odds stacked against them. Directed by Andrew Cohn and Davy Rothbart, Medora premieres on Independent Lens, hosted by Stanley Tucci, on Monday, March 31, 2014, 10:00-11:30 PM ET on PBS (check local listings). Years ago, Medora was a booming rural community with a thriving middle class. But the factories and farms are now closed and the population has dwindled. Poverty and despair have moved in. The filmmakers traveled to the tiny town after reading a 2009 New York Times story about the struggles of the basketball team.

HopwoodThe Newsletter Vol. LXVII, 1 http://www.lsa.umich.edu/english/hopwood/ January, 2006 HOPWOOD New Year’s Greetings! This winter we’re honored to mark the 75th anniversary of the Hopwood Awards Program. Events throughout the winter term—most open to the public, but some for Hopwood winners exclusively—will let us celebrate this important time in Hopwood Program history. Inside you will find a calendar of events including readings, films, a presentation of Hopwood’s play The Gold Diggers, and many other notable events. The calendar begins with a poetry reading by Alice Fulton at the Hopwood Underclassmen Awards Ceremony in January and culminates in April with Charles Baxter’s delivery of the Hopwood Lecture, “Losers,” at the Graduate and Undergraduate Hopwood Awards Ceremony. The ceremony will be followed by a banquet for returning Hopwood awardees. You will receive a formal invitation to the banquet in February. The day after the banquet will see the release of The Hopwood Awards: 75 Years of Prized Writ- ing, an anthology of fiction and poetry by Hopwood Award winners from the 1930’s until the present. TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW WITH FILMMAKER AND SCREENWRITER ANDREW COHN September 30, 2020 Host: Bryan Smith Andrew Cohn (00:00:00): I remember calling my wife and just saying, "I just got a phone call from Alexander Payne." And she said, "What?!" And I said, "Yeah, he read my script and I think he wants to direct it." And she said, "What?!" And I said, "Yeah, I know, right?" But I remember walking down the hill and thinking: I think this changes things. Bryan Smith (00:00:24): Bryan Smith here and welcome to the DreamPath podcast. Where I try to get inside the heads of talented creatives from all over the world. My goal is to demystify and humanize the creative process and make it accessible to everyone. Now, let's jump in. Bryan Smith (00:00:42): Andrew Cohn's on the show. Andrew is an Emmy award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter. His most recent film is The Last Shift which he wrote and directed, starring Academy Award nominee Richard Jenkins, Shane Paul McGee, and Ed O'Neill. The film was executive produced by two time Academy Award winner, and film legend, Alexander Payne. You probably remember Alexander from his films The Descendants with George Clooney, About Schmidt with Jack Nicholson, Election, Nebraska, and Sideways, among others. The Last Shift premiered at Sundance this year, where it was picked up by Sony pictures and released last week in theaters. I was lucky to see The Last Shift at Sundance, where I interviewed the film's production designer, Adri Siriwatt, but I wasn't able to connect with Andrew.

  • Alex Blumberg's Manifesto
the transom review September, 2005 Vol. 5/Issue 2 Alex Blumberg About Alex Blumberg Alex Blumberg is a producer for the public radio program This American Life. He has done radio documentaries on, among other things, the U.S. Navy, people who do impersonations of their mothers, and teenage Steve Forbes supporters. His story on clinical medical ethicists won the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) award for best radio documentary. Before he made the move to journalism at age 31, he was a middle school science teacher and basketball coach for four years. Highlights include1995’s electricity science fair when every student’s hand-made, battery-powered electric motor actually worked, and teaching Michelle Ashley to shoot a lay-up. Before that, he was a settlement counselor for Russian refugees in Chicago. He has a B.A. from Oberlin College. Intro from Jay Allison We're trying something a little different. Our Guest this month is not only Alex Blumberg, but also his entire class of students at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Alex is a producer at This American Life, responsible for many great radio stories, and he's also a wonderful explainer (see his manifesto below). He and his class are setting up shop on Transom to sort out the basic, important stuff that somehow tends to get overlooked in radio journalism, like what makes a good story and what doesn't. They'll be posting the audio from their class assignments, and along with you, critiquing the process and the result. We invite you to join us for this master class within a master class.
