Status and Identity on a Smallholder Caribbean Plantation: an Archaeological Perspective Status and Identity on a Smallholder Caribbean Plantation: An Archaeological Perspective Brianna Mayer Honors Thesis in the Department of Anthropology University of Michigan April 2016 Abstract Enslaved people rarely wrote their own stories; instead their lives were most often described in the written records of their masters and overseers. For small plantations and areas with scarce archival records, archaeology provides a crucial window into the daily life of enslaved populations. Yet both small plantations and plantations in the Caribbean are understudied. This research examines the social and economic status of individuals living on a sugar plantation on Great Camanoe in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) during the late-18th to mid-19th centuries – a transitional time in the British plantation economy. By comparing the artifacts in two habitation contexts, a better understanding of how the enslaved and planter negotiated their identities can be gained. Identity is ephemeral and abstract, yet identity produces tangible realities, and these realities have material consequences. On small or poor plantation sites, differences in power are less distinct archaeologically when compared with wealthy plantations, where social hierarchies are clearly defined by differences in living spaces and material possessions. This study examines artifacts found in different contexts to examine how identity was symbolized and negotiated through material culture. Although similar artifacts were found in both structures, differences in the presences and absence of certain types of items indicate the subtle ways in which social status and identity were displayed by the inhabitants of this plantation. 2 Acknowledgements I would first like to thank my thesis advisor Dr. John Chenoweth at the University of Michigan in Dearborn, who allowed a student he had never met before into his lab and office to study this collection of artifacts, and for his guidance throughout my thesis project. Hatching plasticity has been documented in diverse terrestrial and freshwater taxa, but in few marine invertebrates. Anecdotal observations over the last 80 years have suggested that intertidal neritid snails may produce encapsulated embryos able to signifi- cantly delay hatching. The cause for delays and the cues that trigger hatching are unknown, but temperature, salinity, and wave action have been suggested to play a role. We followed individual egg capsules of Nerita scabricosta in 16 tide pools to document the variation in natural time to hatching and to determine if large delays in hatching occur in the field. Hatching occurred after about 30 d and varied significantly among tide pools in the field. Average time to hatching in each pool was not correlated with presence of potential preda- tors, temperature, salinity, or pool size. We also compared hatching time between egg cap- sules in the field to those kept in the laboratory at a constant temperature in motionless water, and to those kept in the laboratory with sudden daily water motion and temperature changes. There was no significant difference in the hatching rate between the two laboratory treatments, but capsules took, on average, twice as long to hatch in the laboratory as in the field.

Once specific genetic differences were de- tected, ‘a posteriori’ searching for phenotypic characters has been undertaken to differentiate cryptic species and to formally describe and name them. The name D. petraeum (Monterosato, 1884) should be restricted to the species of this complex dis- tributed around the central Mediterranean (type locality in Sicily). In the present work this taxon is redescribed under the oldest valid name D. cristatum (Biondi, 1857), and a new species belonging to this complex is described, distributed in the western Mediterranean. These descriptions are based on a comparative study focusing on the protoconch, teleoconch, and external and internal anatomy. Morphologically, the two species can be only distinguished on the basis of non-easily visible anatomical features, and by differences in protoconch size and sculpture.

Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range.

Molluscan species are particularly targeted due to their culture potential in terms of known techniques, simple grow-out technology and low impact on surrounding environment. It is proposed that a regional molluscan hatchery would produce seed for sale and distribution to grow-out operations in the region as well as provide technical support for the research on new species.

ABSTRACT The family Neritidae has representatives in tropical and subtropical regions that occur in a variety of environments, and its known fossil record dates back to the late Cretaceous. However there have been few studies of molecular phylogeny in this family. We performed a phylogenetic reconstruction of the family Neritidae using the COI (722 bp) and the 16S rRNA (559 bp) regions of the mitochondrial genome. Neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were performed. The best phylogenetic reconstruction was obtained using the COI region, and we consider it an appropriate marker for phylogenetic studies within the group. Consensus analysis (COI +16S rRNA) generally obtained the same tree topologies and confirmed that the genus Nerita is monophyletic. The consensus analysis using parsimony recovered a monophyletic group consisting of the genera Neritina , Septaria , Theodoxus , Puperita , and Clithon , while in the Bayesian analyses Theodoxus is separated from the other genera.

Littoral (part of the sea close to the shore) gastropod commonly referred to as the West Indian topshell or whelks, C. pica attains the size of 10cm with its shell having black and white markings (Fig. 1). The shell is conical (Sartwell, 2013) with younger specimens being mostly white, but may have a greenish/yellowish tinge due to the staining of blue-green algae (Randall, 1964). The inner shell surface is nacreous (mother of pearl). There are patterns of coarse checkering of alternating white and black per whorl (turn) of the shell. With the stated objective of serving “as a starting point for the identification of critical areas where it will be necessary to concentrate all efforts in the future”, the first Western Atlantic Turtle Sym- posium convened in Costa Rica (17-22 July 1983), and the second in Puerto Rico four years later (12-16 October 1987). WATS I featured National Reports from 43 political jurisdictions; 37 pre- sented at WATS II.
