Freeman Director of Football on JDecember 19, 2006, wasted little time in making a big impression in the college football circles in his first season as Stanford’s head coach. Stanford was one of the most improved teams in the Pacific-10 Conference last season under Harbaugh, whose infectious energy and enthusiasm immediately took hold of the program. The Cardinal finished with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-6 mark in conference play last season following a 2006 campaign which saw the team win just one game in 12 outings. Included in last year’s win total was an epic, 24-23 upset win over USC, ranked first in the USA Today Coaches poll and second by the Associated Press at the time, and a convincing win over defending Pac-10 Conference co-champion California, breaking the Bears five-game winning streak in the Big Game. While a pair of signature victories served notice Stanford’s program was again on the rise, Harbaugh is more than ready to push the envelope a little further this season as the Cardinal continue its journey to the upper echelon of a talent-rich conference in its quest to become perennial bowl participants.

American football gained fame as the people wanted to detach themselves from the English influence. The father of this sport Walter Camp altered the shape and size of the ball to an oval-shaped ball called ovoid ball and drawn up some unique set of rules. Objective American Football is played on a four sided ground with goalposts at each end. The two opposing teams are named as the Offense and the Defense, The offensive team with control of the ovoid ball, tries to go ahead down the field by running and passing the ball, while the defensive team without control of the ball, targets to stop the offensive team’s advance and tries to take control of the ball for themselves. The main objective of the sport is scoring maximum number of goals by moving forward with the ball into the opposite team's end line for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the challenger's goalposts which is counted as a goal and the team gets points for the goal. The team with the most points at the end of a game wins. According to Immanuel Wallerstein, the state crafting legislation to allow an anticompetitive business practice is an example of a basic contradiction of capitalism being reconciled. Researching the development of the SBA unveils two historically significant narratives. The first is the fact that antitrust legislator Emanuel Celler crafted the act with the intent of providing the National Football League competition although the act unintentionally aided the formation of a professional football monopoly. The other is that the act legalized a collectivist business practice in a time of anticommunist fervor and was written by a legislator with well-documented anticommunist credentials.

Sanders, a ninth-year Broncos’ wide receiver who tore his Achilles during practice in December, posted a video Monday to Instagram of himself hopping out of a black Mercedes-Benz SUV — without a walking boot — before a quick celebratory jig. His caption read: “Slight limp but I’m finally out of the boot.” Two months have passed between Sanders’ injury and the post, but a long journey remains for him to be able to play. Former NFL team doctor David Chao told The Denver Post in December: “Recovery is not like a light switch, more of a slow sunrise. Some have returned as early as six months but may not have been 100 percent. Nine months is a good target but to really be explosive (it) could be longer and closer to a year. This is why I expect (Sanders) likely will not be ready or 100 percent for start of (the 2019) season.” However, Sanders expressed little doubt in December he’ll return to being the same playmaker he showcased in 12 games last season with a team-leading 71 receptions for 868 yards. THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 14, No. 2 (1992) Origins of the WLAF By Tod Maher When the World League of American Football began its inaugural season last March, it marked the culmination of years of planning by the NFL. If you ask NFL people when they got the idea of putting football teams in Europe (or look in last year’s WLAF media guide for the answer), they’ll probably say 1983. That, of course, is when the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Cardinals played the first NFL exhibition game in London. However, the NFL had planned to place professional teams in Europe as far back as June 5, 1974. That was the day the NFL announced that “it would attempt to introduce pro football to Europe.” The Intercontinental Football League The NFL planned a “satellite” league that would start play in the spring of 1975 and would be called the Intercontinental Football League. The NFL even had nicknames for the six teams. They were the Istanbul Conquerors, the Rome Gladiators, the Munich Lions, the Berlin Bears, the Vienna Lippizzaners (no kidding! ) and the Barcelona Almovogeres (ditto). The NFL also had pre-selected four expansion teams – the Paris Lafayettes, the Copenhagen Vikings, the Rotterdam Flying Dutchmen and the Milan Centurions. The financing and stocking of the teams was to be handled virtually the same as today’s WLAF. The NFL owners were to provide the initial funding, and the league would employ “second-line athletes and rookies from established NFL teams.” Heading the NFL committee that was to put the league together were AI Davis and Tex Schramm.

THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 3, No. 9 (1981) NFL COMPETITORS: 1926 - 1975 By Stephen Hensley "There is a great public demand to see the game." Those are the words of W.H. "Big Bill" Edwards, the commissioner of the new American Football League in 1926. This was the first attempt to set up a rival league opposite the National Football League. It would not be the last. In all there have been six major attempts to wrestle parts of the market from the NFL. A couple were successful but for the most part the attempts have been failures. Yet all of them started out with the same premise that Big Bill Edwards expounded over a half century ago, "There is a great public demand to see the game." The first of these leagues was the American Football League (a name to be used several more times) which was founded in 1926 because Harold "Red" Grange was denied a franchise with the NFL in New York City. After turning pro with the Chicago Bears late in the 1925 season, Grange had led the Bruins through a 19-game, coast-to-coast tour which had been a financial lifesaver for all of pro football. Grange's manager, promoter Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, believed that Grange had enough fan appeal to start his own team. But the move was blocked by Tim Mara, owner of the year-old New York Giants. Although most of the NFL teams were willing to approve the move, Mara would not sanction another team in the Giants' area.
