A bit of colour makes all the difference. If any member would prefer to receive their copy of OnBoard as an emailed pdf file, please contact membership secretary, Anne Ramsay at [email protected] Emailed pdfs should arrive a little earlier than the mailed booklets. They will be indexed and in full colour throughout. In general, the colour cover on the magazine also drew approving comments and this magazine again has a colour cover, but it does cost more to print, so I will revert to a black and white cover on editions where I do not have anything worthy of the more costly option. I hope you agree that this issue is worthy. I am very grateful to all the people who have contributed some content to this issue. I really am getting to know who OnBoard’s friends are. Nevertheless, I have again written an unsustainably large proportion of the material myself. I continue to strive to make this a membership magazine as much as a Scrabble one. Please make it your New Year’s resolution: to write something for OnBoard in 2011. Have a great Christmas holiday and New Year. Nevertheless, I do have enough of my marbles left to know how much I owe to everybody who has sent me material of some sort for inclusion. I really cannot produce a magazine without you lot, so please do keep giving a thought to what you may contribute. This, of course is issue number 1 of the newsletter under the new title of OnBoard. It was very gratifying to receive so many name suggestions - over 50 - and I am happy with the final choice. The full array of suggestions was emailed to committee members with the request that they send me short lists of their favourites. I had hoped by this means to create my own short list to put to an AGM vote, however the title of OnBoard was the favourite of seven out of the eleven replies I received; and five of those seven declined to add any other names to their list. OnBoard was unchallengeable as the new title. Here is a list of the suggested titles as received by the committee - they were not informed as to who had proposed what. I was pleased to be able to tell them that their popular choice had been solely the suggestion of outgoing editor Elisabeth Jardine.

    N A S P NASPA Bulletin® The monthly news bulletin of the North American SCRABBLE Players Association A July 2012: Vol. 4, No. 2 The 2012 Dallas Open: Winter in Spring by Chris Cree 2012 marked the final year for the Dallas Open. This was the seventh such event: DO7. The event was born following discussions of divisions and my belief that the players of today have no idea how good they are. Anybody can beat anyone at any time. For many years with our old rating system, one was basically stuck within a division. This was in contrast to the way SCRABBLE tour- naments were when I first started in 1980. All tournaments were single-division. After the formation of divisions, upward move- ment was extremely difficult to maintain and lower-division players never had the oppor- tunity to compare themselves to and com- pete with the best. So, to prove the point, the open tournament was resurrected and the first Dallas Open took place in 2006. In the very first game of the first Dallas Open, Phyllis Owen (Plano, TX), rated no Board 1 at the Dallas Open: (L–R) annotator Dee Segrest (Highland Village, TX), event leader more than 800, bested one of the best players Kate Fukawa-Connelly (Kittery, ME) in the seat she kept throughout the second day, her Round to ever play the game, Robin Pollock Daniel 15 opponent Patricia Barrett (Houston, TX) and annotator Kathleen Watson (Bedford, TX).     N A S P NASPA Bulletin® The monthly news bulletin of the North American SCRABBLE Players Association A February 2012: Vol. 4, No. 1 The Big Easy & Other Points Hither and Yon by Chris Cree Official SCRABBLE tournaments re- turned to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend west of the Mississippi and did so with a big splash! Lila Crotty (Metairie, LA) and Kate Fu- kawa-Connelly (Kittery, ME) produced the Inaugural Crescent City Cup SCRABBLE Tournament in New Orleans, LA. Their hus- bands, Tim & Tim, handled respectively data entry and direction of the event. The event took place at the Inn on Bourbon, a quaint oasis in the midst of the French Quarter. The room was the perfect size for the event. In a wild finish befitting the personality of this city, 6 people had identical records entering the final round. Jesse Day (Berke- ley, CA) bested Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY) at Table 1 and had enough cumulative point spread to fend off the two others who fin- ished with Jesse’s 14–6 record. The hostess, Alan Mason (Eureka, CA) won the SCRABBLE Flash game at the Redwood Coast SCRABBLE Kate Fukawa-Connelly, finished second and Club’s February 12 tournament in Arcata, CA. The tournament was directed by Leah Kruley. Jim Burlant (Grapevine, TX) finished third. In order to raise the standard of service provided, the Committee agreed that we should build up a pool of people who might be willing to lend their time and skill to assist with some of the ongoing duties, or one-off project activities. Graeme Thomas Memorial Fund The Graeme Thomas Memorial Fund was set up in 2006, following the tragic and untimely death of the former ABSP chair and president. In the past five years, the fund has been used to encourage new and young players into the game, supporting attendees at the World Youth Scrabble Championships and at various events for new players around the country. The committee would love to see that support continue in fresh ways. If you have any ideas you would like to pursue to get new blood into the tournament scene, ABSP would like to help, and can provide both financial and non-financial assistance in your plans.

Over 100 players qualified of which 15 were from the United States and 8 were from Canada.
