Nigel Farage Background: Former leader of UKIP and present leader of the Brexit Party (2019-) MEP Key features: Known as someone who defies “political correctness” and is quick-witted in his addresses. Often takes the stance as the spokesperson for the worker/small man in the fight against the established system, when addressing the press. Affiliation: Brexit Party: UK based Founded in 2019 by Nigel Farage – as a branch out from the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). The party gained massive support in the 2019 European Parliament elections with 31% of the vote. This is often ascribed partly to Farage’s high profile and engaging personality, which attracts votes. In April 2019, Farage said that there was “no difference between the Brexit party and UKIP in terms of policy, [but] in terms of personnel, there’s a vast difference”, criticizing UKIP’s connections to the far right. There’s not much point in having a United Kingdom if we’re governed from somewhere else. Border / Red Lines: We may as well become a satellite state of the EU because that’s The Brexit Party wants the result of the EU Ref- erendum to be upheld. The Brexit Party believes virtually what we are. the UK should leave the European Single Mar- ket and the EU Customs Union in a “clean- break” Brexit with no settlement. They seek a Free Trade Agreement with the EU (no tariffs while maintaining regulatory independence) - if the EU is not willing to do this, they will trade Alliances: on WTO terms. They want to keep the UK in- Supports the Eurosceptical part of UK politics tact and are against an Irish Sea border. (started his career in the Conservatives, joined UKIP and founded the Brexit Party). When Farage left UKIP, announcing that he had achieved what he wanted from a political career, and later founded the Brexit Party, UKIP leader Gerard Batten called Farage a “self-serving hypocrite” while Farage claimed that UKIP had become a “refuge for the far right”. During the 2019 snap-elections the Brexit Party withdrew their candidates from Conservative Party constituencies in order to boost/support a strong “Leave” vote. - jeres opgaver Rollespil om Grænsen for Brexit Som rådgivere og politikere, skal I forberede en opening statement og deltage i to forhandlinger om UKs udtræden af EU og det fremtidige handelsforhold. • Democratic Audit: European Elections 2019: What Will Happen in the East of England Region? Page 1 of 6
Democratic Audit: European elections 2019: what will happen in the East of England region? Page 1 of 6 European elections 2019: what will happen in the East of England region? Traditionally this is a Conservative region at Westminster elections. Yet the East of England is strongly Eurosceptic and UKIP came top here in the last European Parliament elections in 2014, although the Tories hung on (just) to three seats. The Brexit Party now look certain to take over the UKIP vote and comfortably come first: on current polls they are guaranteed three of the region’s seven seats, and possibly one more. The latest polling indicates that Labour and the Liberal Democrats look assured of a single seat each. So the main uncertainty hangs on just how dominant the Brexit Party vote will be, whether the Tories’ slump means that they lose all of their seats here, and whether the Greens can pick up a seat. With voters able to cast only a single vote for a party list, the Democratic Audit team reviews likely outcomes for the parties and the main potentially electable candidates. Norwich cathedral. Picture: MemoryCatcher / 3041 images The East of England region juts into the North Sea and covers East Anglia down to the northern fringes of London. People here voted 56.5% to 43.5% for Leave in the Brexit referendum. Yet the area also includes some anti-Brexit cities such as Norwich and Cambridge. Last time UKIP won 35% of the vote and gained three MEPs (two of whom subsequently defected to other parties).

  • Letter to Prime Minister, Re Withdrawal Agreement
12 Brexit organisations urge Boris Johnson to finish the job If the Prime Minister is serious about trade talks being over, what better time to announce that the Withdrawal Treaty is null and void? 12 Brexit organisations urge the PM to act Sunday, 18th October 2020 Dear Prime Minister, We applaud your statement on Friday following the EU Council meeting, making it clear that the EU has failed to engage in meaningful trade talks with the United Kingdom based on what the EU has agreed with other countries. As you said: “… from the outset we were totally clear that we wanted nothing more complicated than a Canada-style relationship, based on friendship and free trade. To judge by the latest EU summit in Brussels that won’t work for our EU partners. They want the continued ability to control our legislative freedom, our fisheries, in a way that is obviously unacceptable to an independent country. “… And given that they have refused to negotiate seriously for much of the last few months, and given that this summit appears explicitly to rule out a Canada-style deal, I have concluded that we should get ready for January 1 with arrangements that are more like Australia’s based on simple principles of global free trade.” Please act now, Prime Minister On this basis, we now urge you to act to rescind and void the Withdrawal Agreement in order to complete the process. The reasons are simple and compelling. • The United Kingdom as a state has never needed the EU’s permission to leave it and has always retained its sovereign right to withdraw from the EU.

  • Report for Bawdsey Parish 2019
Report for Bawdsey Parish 2019 2019 was a memorable year full of diverse happenings including extreme weather events, the latter a reminder of the vulnerability of small coastal villages in this era of global warning. Two spates of burglaries in November have compounded this feeling of being at risk. Three elections this year reflected the current political uncertainty, and continuing austerity has been felt in the withdrawal of visits by the community policeman from the Woodbridge Safer Neighbour Team and in the need for the parish council to pay Suffolk CC for Highways works. But community feeling is strong in this small village of 195 households (which also comprises the hamlet of Shingle Street a mile north of Bawdsey) and the year has been punctuated by numerous community events. This report includes for the first time a paragraph about farming in the area. New rock armour shoring up the sea wall at East Lane. View towards Shingle Street Coastal Matters: Bawdsey is very vulnerable to coastal erosion both at Bawdsey Quay at the mouth of the Deben and at East Lane. A local Coastal Erosion Measuring team has been measuring the extent of the erosion at Bawdsey Quay over the past six years and feeding the information into a national data base. It appears the shingle is being moved across the mouth of the estuary on to the Knolls and causing a narrowing of the channel, posing a risk to sailors entering and exiting from the river. A link to satellite imagery of the inlet over the last year with accompanying blog can be accessed at https://suffolkinlets.wordpress.com/2019/12/18/a-year-in-the-life-of-the-deben-inlet/ The sea wall at East Lane was damaged during last year’s Beast from the East and earlier this year the remains of the stock of rock armour was used to shore up the coast.

  • “Deal Or Walk”
The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA 19 November 2020 Dear Prime Minister, Important message to you from the major Brexit organisations reflecting the views of millions of voters: “Deal or Walk” Prime Minister, it took the EU more than three years and eight months after the British people voted to leave the European Union before the EU was ready to even start talking about a trade deal. In hindsight, this should have told us all everything we needed to know. Three trade deal deadlines have now passed: 30 June, 31 July, and 15 October. This Thursday 19 November the EU27 leaders are meeting and it was hoped a deal would be ready to be discussed. Sadly the EU remains intransigent on fundamental matters which are entirely normal when dealing with an independent and sovereign country, and the UK-EU trade deal is not even on the agenda at its meeting. In light of the EU’s behaviour, the only reasonable and practical action is to call a halt. The United Kingdom cannot be trapped in negotiations where the other party’s priorities are not trade, but political ideology and the desire to see a departing country be damaged. The UK’s economic interests, jobs, and freedoms must now come first. The United Kingdom’s negotiating team led by Lord Frost has been immensely patient, and its efforts have been valiant, but enough is enough. No country in the World could agree to the EU’s continuing demands. It is not even remotely possible to ‘meet half-way’.

  • Fishing News: “It’S Not Often in fisheries in General and fisheries Science in Particular That Something Is Absolutely Clear-Cut and Unequivocal
Dutch legal challenge to EU pulse ban Dutch fishermen have mounted a legal challenge to the EU ban on electric pulse beam trawling, reports Tim Oliver 29/10 Dutch agriculture minister Carola Schouten has filed an application with the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, calling for the ban to be overturned. She said in a letter to the Dutch parliament that the EU Council and European parliament have breached several parts of EU law. She claims the ban on pulse fishing is not based on the best available science, and that it harms innovation and technological development. The EU parliament voted to ban the method in April. The ban is being phased in, with 42 of the 84 licences being withdrawn this year and the remainder by July 2021. The UK has already banned pulse fishing inside its 12-mile limit, and is expected to extend the ban to its 200-mile EEZ/median line waters after Brexit. UK industry leaders and French green group BLOOM slammed the attempt to overturn the ban. Jerry Percy, leader of NUTFA, which campaigned strongly for a ban on pulse beaming, said there was ‘absolutely no reason for the ban to be reconsidered’, and that electric beaming was ‘a very real threat’ to the economic survival of inshore fishermen around the southern North Sea. He told Fishing News: “It’s not often in fisheries in general and fisheries science in particular that something is absolutely clear-cut and unequivocal. “The impacts of electric pulse fishing certainly are, and the recent CEFAS report underlines these dreadful levels of destruction, first observed by inshore fishermen in the southeast of England and transmitted to Brussels via the Low Impact Fishers of Europe (LIFE) platform, of which NUTFA is a founder member.
