En su límite superior altitudinal forman ecotonos con bosques de Abies. Hipótesis: Con el incremento de la altitud, hay un cambio direccional en la distribución de las especies dominantes, estructura de la vegetación y disminución en riqueza de especies leñosas. Descripción de datos: Los datos analizados incluyeron área basal, altura, abundancia, diversidad Shannon, riqueza y variables ambientales. Sitio de estudio y año de estudio: El occidente de Jalisco, en dos localidades con bosque mesófilo de montaña y bosque de Abies, desde septiembre de 2013 hasta agosto de 2015. Métodos: Se midieron e identificaron especies leñosas en 32 unidades de muestreo de 0.1 ha; mediante análisis de regresión y métodos mul- tivariados se exploraron variables ambientales asociadas a grupos de vegetación en relación con la altitud. -

Orophea (Annonaceae) have various benefits and play important roles in lowland forest structures. Due to their importance, various Orophea species currently require identification for research and conservation purposes. One of many important variables for such purpose is leaf morphometrical features. This study aimed to investigate leaf morphometrical variations, measure morphometrical similarities, and identify determinant morphometrical traits for species identification in Orophea spp. As many as 23 living plant specimens of Orophea spp. cultivated in Purwodadi Botanic Gardens (belongs to 4 species: Orophea celebica, O. chlorantha, O. enneandra, O. hexandra and an unidentified Orophea sp.) were observed. Twelve measured leaf morphometrical traits in this study were leaf length and width, petiole length, distance from leaf base to the widest part of the leaf, number of secondary veins, apex and base shape, leaf area, length of leaf margin, length to width ratio, leaf roundness and slimness indices. -

Area of Study: Field sampling was conducted in 20 Abies forest sites over two elevation ranges (Laguna Juanacatlan and Cerro La Bufa) in western Jalisco, Mexico. Material and Methods: Using linear regressions, relationships between climate and fir forest structure were inferred. We examined vegetation structure complemented by cluster and indicator species analyses. Main results: A total of 2378 stems belonging to 67 species were recorded, species richness and Shannon index were not different between localities. Cluster analysis suggest three forest types: upper montane cloud forest (UMCF), mixed fir-UMCF and fir forest. Fir basal area and abundance showed differences between localities. Reverse J-shaped size distribution pattern was found, except in the Cerro La Bufa lower belt, where a J-shaped pattern indicates low recruitment and high number of canopy individuals. -
Structure and Diversity of Oak Forests in the El Tepozteco National Park (Morelos, Mexico)

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Quercus (oak) is among the most speciose and widespread genera occurring in Mexico; paradoxically, the ecologi- cal knowledge about Mexican oak forests is meager. Here we describe the fl oristic composition, diversity, and structure of the terrestrial component of the oak forests of the El Tepozteco National Park (TNP), Central Mexico, and relate their fl oristic and structural heterogeneity to the geomorphological complexity of the park. We randomly distributed sixty 100-m2 plots among six geomorphological units: the lava fi elds of the Chichinautzin, Suchiooc, Otates (upper and lower) and Oclayuca volcanoes, and the El Tepozteco Range. Vegetation structure and diversity were described by geomorphological unit and for the oak forest as a whole for canopy (DBH ≥ 2.5 cm) and understory plants. We report 324 vascular plant species recorded in the plots, plus 17 species col- lected outside the plots (a total of 341 species, 208 genera and 88 families). The family with more species was Asteraceae (57) and the most speciose genus was Salvia (10). Geomorphological units differed in mean species richness per plot (12.0-33.5 species), absolute richness (60-149 species), and species’ structural contributions. Structural differences were also observed, but they were not always signifi cant.
