  • Bulletin Book Extracts
Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

2021 CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL PREVIEW A comprehensive preview with expert contributions from: • Steve Lewis Hamilton - Professional backer • Donn McClean - Racing writer and presenter Steve (SLH) assesses the home challenge whilst Donn (DMC) analyses the Irish contingent. Prices shown correct at the time of writing. • Richard Hoiles • John Hunt Top racing commentators provide their on-course insight. • Ten year trends The telling stats from Paul O’Hara • Exclusive horses to follow Direct from a variety of Lambourn trainers The going is expected to be Good to Soft with dry, mild weather over the four days. Tuesday 16th 1.20 Supreme Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) 4yo+ 2m½f SLH: Metier, Soaring Eagle and at big odds Grumpy Charlie are the pick of the British trained horses. Metier was a decent performer on the flat in Ireland and has progressed from race to race over hurdles since moving to Harry Fry. He is a strong stayer who performs well on soft ground. It is taken as fact that the course will be prepared to ride no firmer than Good to Soft on the opening day. Soaring Glory showed marked improvement when impressively winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury. He appears to be less dependent on ground conditions than Metier and looks sure to figure. On soft ground Grumpy Charlie could run better than his odds suggest if allowed to take his chance. Despite not being totally straightforward, he is improving with racing experience. DMC: At the start of the season, it looked like Appreciate It was going to be Willie Mullins’ Ballymore Hurdle horse, and that Ferny Hollow was going to be his Supreme Novices’ Hurdle horse.

We have tried to avoid the more obvious choices like Envoi Allen, Shishkin, Epatante and Al Boum Photo, and have instead gone for some that seem on the face of it to be a bit darker… although all of them could easily turn out to be top class! It is very hard to be confident about which 2021 Festival targets horses will be aimed at but we have tried to avoid those that are declared for multiple events and have come up with horses that are currently quoted at double figure prices for the races we think they are most likely to line up for. Why not set all ten up in a free tracker, there are plenty available and you'll get an email sent to you every time one is due to run so you can watch how they develop over the season. If you don't know, don't worry I'll tell you in the next section how to do it… it's dead easy! Anyway, we hope that you enjoy our guide and that it brings plenty of enjoyment and hopefully a few winners over the season.

  • Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Daniel Watkins
Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Daniel Watkins www.lapoftheodds.com Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Introduction The annual quest for winners sees me routinely holed up in a back bedroom, hunched over a keyboard and monitor for interminable weeks on end, hardly seeing a soul and rarely out of my pyjamas. What was a nerdy niche is now pretty much the working mainstream. Welcome to my world, one and all… With such trying external circumstances, and so little to look forward to in the short term, it seems that the pull of the Cheltenham Festival has grown exponentially greater again this year. This humble guide started for a few friends in 2004 and is now in edition number 18. If you are looking for views and predictions, they are now myriad over social media. There are some very insightful nuggets amongst the deafening cacophony of “this can’t be beaten” over-confidence. It is great to see such interest stimulated, and whilst hearing many views has the dangers of being dragged towards consensus (and there’s rarely profit there), it also helps temper the unfounded runaway confidence that can come from being in too much of a bubble. Thanks as always to the long-suffering Tanya, whose annual support for my selfish Springtime obsession is only partly offset by the knowledge that she is my obsession throughout the year. No-one should have had to witness the petulant tantrums when the Novice handicap chase was dropped for the mares chase, and I can only plead forgiveness!! Please stay in touch by subscribing, following or liking my blog, Lap of The Odds (www.lapoftheodds.com), and watch for daily articles during festival week, where non-runners and weather may result in some changes to selections.

  • 5 Top Irish Race Trials for the Cheltenham Festival
5 TOP IRISH RACE TRIALS FOR THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL Over the last two Seasons I've really been taking a real interest in the races leading up to the Cheltenham Festival to see which ones are most useful in pinpointing the winners and places for that meeting. This is pretty much the concept behind my recent Route 66 service and although that concentrates mainly on the UK races, we do also consider the challenge from over the Irish Sea. These 5 races are amongst the very best Irish race pointers run before the New Year with the Cheltenham Festival in mind.... IRISH RACE 1: MORGIANA HURDLE– PUNCHESTOWN A really good early indicator for the Champion Hurdle although it has also been a future pointer towards both the World Hurdle and Champion Chase. 2016 winner Nichols Canyon went on to win that Season's World Hurdle at 10/1. Nichols Canyon also caused a big shock the previous year when inflicting the only defeat on stablemate Faugheen before going on to run third in the Champion Hurdle. Hurricane Fly finished 1st-4th-3rd in the Champion Hurdle after his 3 Morgiana wins. 2011 winner Thousand Stars ran fourth in the World Hurdle that Season while dual winner Solwhit was off the track for nearly 2 years after his 2010 win but did win the World Hurdle in 2013. Future star chaser Sizing Europe finished 2nd in 2008. In 2005 Brave Inca won both here and the Champion Hurdle, the 4th place finisher Newmill went on to win The Champion Chase and last home Macs Joy was runner up in the Champion Hurdle.

  • Racing to Profit Members' Club: Cheltenham Festival Handicap
Racing To Profit Members’ Club: Cheltenham Festival Handicap Stats/Trends/Pointers Intro This report focusses on the ten handicaps to be run at this year’s Cheltenham Festival. They are always the main focus of my week because I see them as the hardest punting puzzles of all and my main buzz comes from trying to solve them. As with any stats/trends approach it is very subjective and this is my own take. Others who I respect (mainly Ben Aitken and Gavin Priestley) have a different approach that works for them. I have found my unique approach- ‘a winning profile’ - works for me, or has done in recent years anyway! I like to focus on a set of traits that every winner over the last decade has shared. I have used the big race trends ‘query’ tool within Horse Race Base to dig into the last 10 renewals of each race. I have simply detailed the stats/trends/pointers that looked of most importance to my eyes. I went through each race using the same stats template and the stat/profiles s I focus on can be unique/obscure. From the list of stats/trends for each race I will create my own ‘winning profile’ - the initial stats I will use in the hope of forming a shortlist for each race. Clearly you are free to pull together your own profile, using the stats that are most interesting to you. In general, the bigger the 0 from X figure, and the smaller the number of placed horses for the negative stats, the better.
