This isn't exactly a deep holiness theological issue but I found it to be of significant interest. I hope it is an acceptable topic for this list. It was published today in my local paper but you can find it at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4371266,00.html It expresses how the concept of Self has evolved and changed dramatically over the past 100 years or so. It is a secular view but understanding the secular world will help us to better understand how to minister and witness to it. One comment towards the end in particular caught my eye. "In the near future (by 2010), it seems, the Self will enjoy its own unencumbered space. If you run a society based on the satisfaction of desire, then, of course, there should be no surprise when conventions based in part on duty, such as marriage, begin to collapse." We have of course been a selfish lot ever since the Garden but it seems, in light of this article, that a new Hedonism exists today that affects each and everyone of us in a new and different way. Christ asked us to deny Self, take up the cross, and follow Him. Doing so puts us in direct conflict with modern society. Are we up to the task or have we evolved along with the rest of society? Library Office Hours: TBA Course Summary: It is by no means rare to begrudge or dismiss theoretical texts: often times they use wild and seemingly unintelligible language, provide no context, examples, or applications, and/or reek of real, offensive, and indefensible social prejudices. And yet, theory exists, develops, and continues to be taught. So there must be something to be gained from writing it and learning it, right? In this course, we hope to show you that theory has merit and, what is more, to help you realize that for yourself. To accomplish this, each of us must come to lecture and recitation with an open mind, prepared to discuss and think creatively through each text, and willing to take risks, be vulnerable, and respect one another. Toward these goals, we will learn how to read and critically engage with sociological theory. This entails developing good reading practices; i.e. the ability to read with patience, fortitude, and a “say yes to the text” mentality. This entails honing a critical sensibility; i.e. the ability to identify and interpret sociohistorical context, germane “schools” or “conversations,” political stakes, and oversights. And again, this entails rediscovering your imagination. Indeed, most of the texts we will read were written by white men in 19th century Europe. -

The Science Behind Volcanoes A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from the magma chamber below the surface. Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust in the interiors of plates, e.g., in the East African Rift, the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and the Rio Grande Rift in North America. This type of volcanism falls under the umbrella of "Plate hypothesis" volcanism. Volcanism away from plate boundaries has also been explained as mantle plumes. These so- called "hotspots", for example Hawaii, are postulated to arise from upwelling diapirs with magma from the core–mantle boundary, 3,000 km deep in the Earth. Erupting volcanoes can pose many hazards, not only in the immediate vicinity of the eruption. Volcanic ash can be a threat to aircraft, in particular those with jet engines where ash particles can be melted by the high operating temperature. Large eruptions can affect temperature as ash and droplets of sulfuric acid obscure the sun and cool the Earth's lower atmosphere or troposphere; however, they also absorb heat radiated up from the Earth, thereby warming the stratosphere. -

Teacher Page Lava Layering Purpose To learn about the stratigraphy of lava flows produced by multiple eruptions. Background [also see “Teacher's Guide” Pages 3, 4, 12, 13] Dark, flat maria (layers of basaltic lava flows) cover about 16 percent of the Moon’s total surface. They are easily seen on a full Moon with the naked eye on clear nights from most backyards. The maria, quite similar to Earth’s basalts, generally flowed long dis- tances utlimately flooding low-lying areas such as impact basins. Yet, the eruption sources for most of the lunar lava flows are difficult to identify. The difficulty in finding source areas results from burial by younger flows and/or erosion from meteor- itic bombardment. Generally, the overall slope of the surface, local topographic relief (small cliffs and depressions), and eruption direction influence the path of lava flows. Detailed maps of the geology of the Moon from photographs reveal areas of complicated lava layering. The study of rock layering is called stratigraphy. On the Moon, older flows become covered by younger flows and/or become more pocked with impact craters. On Earth, older lava flows tend to be more weathered (broken) and may have more vegetation than younger flows. Field geologists use differences in roughness, color, and chemistry to further differentiate between lava flows. They also follow the flow mar- gins, channels, and levees to try to trace lava flows back to the source area. The focus of this activity is on the patterns of lava flows produced by multiple erup- tions. We use a short cup to hold the baking soda because we are looking at the flows and not at constructing a volcano model. -

Her novels call the reader to slow down, to notice the beauty of the ordinary, both in the beauty of her writing and the beauty of the lives she writes about. If one could take a common kitchen sponge, saturate the sponge with the words from her novels, and then wring out the sponge, what one would see drip out slowly would unmis- takably be grace. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

names, Vol. 58 No. 3, September, 2010, 139–49 Names in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead and Home Susan Petit Emeritus, College of San Mateo, California, USA The titles of Marilynne Robinson’s complementary novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008) and the names of their characters are rich in allusions, many of them to the Bible and American history, making this tale of two Iowa families in 1956 into an exploration of American religion with particular reference to Christianity and civil rights. The books’ titles suggest healing and comfort but also loss and defeat. Who does the naming, what the name is, and how the person who is named accepts or rejects the name reveal the sometimes difficult relationships among these characters. The names also reinforce the books’ endorsement of a humanistic Christianity and a recommitment to racial equality. keywords Bible, American history, slavery, civil rights, American literature Names are an important source of meaning in Marilynne Robinson’s prize-winning novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008),1 which concern the lives of two families in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa,2 in the summer of 1956. A Guide to the Lava Bluffs Trail H Calaveras Big Trees State Park I Welcome to the Lava Bluff Trail in Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The Trail This moderately difficult trail will take you through diverse forest environments, across a volcanic formation, and along a historic water ditch, The park’s most col- orful display of spring wildflowers occurs along this trail, as well as excellent op- portunities for birdwatching. There are many steep sections along the 2.5 mile (4 km) loop, including some with difficult footing. Starting at 4,000 feet (1,219 m), the trail ranges from 3,700 (1,127 m) to 4,200 (1,280 m) feet in elevation. Allow at least two hours. Following the south-facing slope of the North Fork Stanislaus River Canyon, this trail has some areas with no shade and can be quite hot during the summer. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellant, wear supportive hiking boots and hike during the cooler part of the day or season. The Trail Guide. This trail guide has numbered stops. The numbers on the trail are NOT marked. Use the topographical map included with this guide to find the locations where the narration is based. PLEASE: • STAY ON THE ESTABLISHED TRAIL. This will help prevent soil erosion, damage to native plants and animals, and injuries to you. • RESPECT ALL WILDLIFE. You may encounter wild animals on your hike.
