Each year in the winegrowing countries of the Community a number of data have to be collected and sent to Eurostat. This information is used to monitor trends in the Community's winegrowing potential and constitutes an important aid to the management of the wine sector. A basic survey carried out every ten years provides information on certain aspects of the structure of vineyards.

The data presented in this publication are some of those disseminated in another statistical document published on the same date 1). The latter are the data sent each year by the Member States in question (Germany, Greece, France, Italy and Luxembourg) during the period since the first basic survey, which was carried out in 1979 and 1982.

Broadly speaking, this information can be used to monitor trends in wine-grape vineyards in the winegrowing countries which were members of the Community of the Ten in the 1980s.

A new cycle began with the second basic survey, carried out between 1988 and 1990, the results of which will be made available to users as soon as possible. These results already include the two new winegrowing countries of the Community (Spain and Portugal).

This publication is merely a brief analysis of some of the data presented in the above-mentioned publication, which comprises à set of tables with data on the area under wine grapes in each of the Member States, production and areas grubbed, replanted and newly planted. All this information is presented by "winegrowing region" and yield class. The data to be provided by the Member States and the presentation thereof are laid down in the legislative texts on these surveys (Council Regulation (EEC) No 357/79 and additional implementing texts).

Users are referred to the above-mentioned publication for any questions concerning the methodology or special features of these data.
