11:15 AM–12:15 PM LEARNING TO NAVIGATE THE FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE & BEYOND Presented by: Caroline Maguire with guest speaker Skip Harris, Director of Counseling Services, and Lauren Bruneau, Academic Support Manager Alumni Auditorium Creating success for college students is really about planning ahead and taking action. At college, parents are no longer around to hold their children accountable, and many of the safeguards of high school are gone. Students must find a way to create structure and scaffolding where there is none. This lack of existing structure can make it especially difficult for students with poor organizational skills, ADD, ADHD, or executive function deficits to find their way in this new environment. Luckily, the planning-ahead muscle can be developed! In this seminar, participants will learn how to develop long-term planning and executive function skills, translate goals into attainable daily actions, and create lasting behavioral change. Students will also be encouraged to seek support when needed from our Counseling & Accommodations Service Center, the SMART Center for academic support, and other on-campus services to help students cope with learning disabilities, depression and anxiety. In addition, participants will be given tools to beat boredom, recover from setbacks and poor decisions, and regroup after periods of low productivity.
