C H APTER -II HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2.0 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS The purpose of this chapter is to give an account of historical back ground of Public Schools, both in England and in India. It is essential to know the origin and development of Public Schools in England, as Public Schools in India had been transplanted from England. 2.1 ORIGIN OF THE TERM PUBLIC SCHOOL The term 'Public School' finds its roots in ancient times. In ancient time kings and bishops used to run the schools for the poor. No fee was charged. All used to live together. It was a union of 'classes'. The expenses were met by public exchequer. Thus the name was given to these schools as Public Schools. 2.2 ESTABLISHMENT OF FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOLS William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester established 'Saint Marie College' at Winchester in 1382. This foundation made a crucial departure from previous practice and thus, has a great historical importance. All the previous schools had been ancillary to other establishments; they Kod been established as parts of cathedrals, collegiate churches, monasteries, chantries, hospitals or university colleges. The significance of this college is its independent nature. 17 Its historian, A.F. Leach says "Thus for the first time a school was established as a sovereign and independent corporation, existing by and for itself, self-centered and self-governed."^ The foundation of Winchester College is considered to be the origin of the English Public School because of three conditions: 1. Pupils were to be accepted from anywhere in England (though certain countries had priority). -

Chidsey All rights reserved ABSTRACT Mediated Empowerments: An Ethnography of Four, All-Girls’ “Public Schools” in North India Meghan M. Chidsey This ethnography takes place at four of northern India’s most renowned, all-girls’ private boarding schools, established in reference to the British Public Schooling model mainly during the tail ends of colonialism by Indian queens and British memsahibs on the sub-continent. It is a story told from the points of view of founders, administrators, and teachers, but primarily from that of students, based on fieldwork conducted from July 2013 through June 2014. Schools heralded as historic venues of purported upper-caste girls’ emancipation, this study interrogates the legacies of this colonial-nationalist moment by examining how these institutions and their female students engage in newer processes and discourses of class formation and gendered empowerment through schooling. For one, it considers the dichotomous (re)constructions of gendered and classed personhoods enacted through exclusionary modernities, particularly in terms of who gains access to these schools, both physically and through symbolic forms of belonging. Six brilliant students of RKK, Sumriddhi Sharma, Riddhima Khajanchi, Pragya Rajawat, Hridal Sarda, Ayushi Malani and Nandini Arya participated in a Virtual Conference Savoir- Faire organized by the Assam Valley School, Assam under the aegis of Round Square pillar of Internationalism and leadership. The conference was based on the theme “WE ARE WEATHERING THE SAME STORM, BUT WE ARE NOT ON THE SAME BOAT” and took place on 31st July and 1st August 2020. Delegates were kept busy and involved by the organisers through a series of keynote sessions, Barraza sessions, discussions, quizzes and Poster making competition. Each school was allocated one country and its leader which followed a thorough research on leadership style, qualities and actions taken by the leader in the current pandemic period. Thoughts and ideas poured in freely from the delegates and inculcated in them the true leadership quality. Unanimous solutions came by to combat the present situation. The conference ended on a happy note with an amazing Closing Ceremony event showcasing vibrant amalgamation of Indian culture. Page 1 of 46 2.
